Toyota GR86 vs. Mazda MX-5 Miata: Which Lightweight Sports Car Suits You in 2026?

The GR86 is a four-seat rear-wheel-drive coupe; the MX-5 Miata is a two-seat soft-top or RF roadster. Compare transmissions, official power figures, 2026 trim prices and the latest Mazda MSRP change before you buy.

Choose the Toyota GR86 if you need a rear-wheel-drive coupe with four seats, or choose the Mazda MX-5 Miata if you want a two-seat roadster with a soft top or retractable-fastback RF body. Both offer a manual transmission, but Mazda reserves the MX-5 automatic for the Grand Touring trim in its cited 2026 U.S. pricing release. Toyota lists manual and automatic versions of the GR86 and Premium.

The right answer depends more on passengers, roof style, transmission and the exact window sticker than on peak horsepower. The specifications below are manufacturer figures, not the result of a back-to-back road test.

Question Choose the GR86 when… Choose the MX-5 Miata when…
How many people must the car carry? You need a coupe with four seats. Toyota identifies the GR86 as rear-wheel drive and lists four seats. Toyota’s 2026 GR86 information Two seats are enough. Mazda describes the MX-5 as a two-seat roadster. Mazda’s January 2026 release
What roof do you want? A fixed-roof coupe. A soft top or the RF retractable-fastback body style.
Which automatic choices are available? Toyota lists manual and automatic GR86 and Premium configurations. The Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring can be manual or automatic in Mazda’s cited U.S. release.
What manufacturer output is listed? 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder: 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. 2.0-liter four-cylinder: 181 hp and 151 lb-ft.
What is the lowest listed starting MSRP? $31,400 for the 2026 GR86, before any applicable charges. $30,430 for the January 27, 2026-listed Sport soft top; Mazda later announced a $300 MSRP increase for affected 2026 vehicles.

Those outputs do not by themselves establish acceleration, lap times, ride quality or which car feels more enjoyable. They are the official specifications available for this comparison.

What the GR86 gives you

A fixed-roof, four-seat layout

The GR86 is the practical choice between these two if occasional rear passengers matter. Toyota’s model information identifies rear-wheel drive and four seats, making it a coupe rather than an open roadster. That does not establish how comfortable an adult will be in the rear or how much luggage fits; the cited official pages do not provide a head-to-head cargo or rear-seat comfort comparison. Sit in the exact car with the people and child seats you expect to carry.

One engine specification, two transmission types

For 2026, Toyota lists a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Toyota also lists six-speed manual and automatic configurations for the GR86, with different prices shown in its model listing. Toyota’s 2026 model listing is the appropriate place to verify the transmission and price of a particular build.

The numbers are peak manufacturer ratings. They do not tell you how the engine responds in every gear, how the automatic behaves in traffic, or how the car feels on a winding road. Those questions require a drive in the transmission and trim you intend to buy.

2026 GR86 trim pricing

GR86 version Listed base MSRP What is established about transmission
GR86 $31,400 Toyota lists manual and automatic configurations, with prices varying by configuration.
GR86 Premium $34,000 Toyota lists manual and automatic Premium configurations with different prices.
GR86 Yuzu Edition $36,365 The cited information does not state whether every transmission choice is available; verify the build sheet.

These are Toyota’s 2026 U.S. listed base MSRPs from its model information, not a dealer quote. Destination, taxes, registration, options and market-specific charges are not supplied in the cited figures. Confirm the total on the vehicle’s window label.

What the MX-5 Miata gives you

Two body styles, both with two seats

Mazda offers the MX-5 as a conventional soft-top roadster and as the RF retractable-fastback. Both are two-seat cars. The soft top is the straightforward open-air format; the RF provides a fastback-style roof treatment while retaining the MX-5 identity. The official material used here does not establish a cargo-volume advantage, weather sealing comparison or operating time for either roof, so inspect and operate the exact body style before ordering.

Output and transmission availability

Mazda lists a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. In Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 release, the Sport and Club are manual-only, while Grand Touring may be ordered with a six-speed manual or automatic. Mazda describes the manual as remaining “at the heart of the MX-5 Miata driving experience”; that is Mazda’s characterization, not an independent test result. If you want an automatic MX-5, start with Grand Touring rather than assuming the less expensive Sport or Club can be equipped that way. If you want a manual, all three cited trims have a manual path, subject to local inventory.

Grand Touring RF Automatic $39,420

The table reproduces Mazda’s January 27 announcement. It should not be read as a universal current transaction price because Mazda issued a later adjustment.

How Mazda’s September 2026 price update changes the comparison

On September 15, 2026, Mazda North American Operations announced a $300 MSRP increase for all 2026 MX-5 and RF models. The notice says the increase applies from that date, while existing dealer inventory and vehicles already carrying window labels are excluded. That means two otherwise similar cars can show different MSRPs depending on when the vehicle was labeled and whether it was already in dealer stock. See Mazda’s September 15 pricing update.

Mazda also says the destination and handling charge became $1,315 effective August 11, 2026, or $1,360 in Alaska. Treat both amounts as U.S. manufacturer figures tied to the stated dates and geography. They are not a complete out-the-door quote: sales tax, registration, dealer charges, accessories, financing and trade-in terms can change what you pay.

For a fair comparison, ask the dealer for the window sticker and write down four items before comparing: model year, body style, transmission and the applicable MSRP rule. Do not compare the GR86’s headline starting price with an RF automatic Grand Touring and call the difference a trim premium; those are different configurations.

Choose by passenger and roof requirements first

If you sometimes need more than two seats

The GR86 is the only candidate here with a four-seat layout. That makes it the logical starting point for a buyer who occasionally carries additional passengers and does not want a second vehicle for that task. Verify real-world fit yourself; the available sources establish the seat count, not adult rear-seat comfort, child-seat compatibility or easy access.

If open-air driving is non-negotiable

The MX-5 is the only car in this comparison offered as a soft top or RF roadster. Choose between those two body styles based on the roof experience and daily-use compromises you observe at a dealer. The GR86 is presented as a coupe, so it does not provide an equivalent factory-open roof choice in the cited material.

If you want a manual at the lowest listed MX-5 price

The Sport soft top is listed with a manual transmission only. The GR86 also has a manual configuration, but Toyota’s cited information shows separate prices for manual and automatic versions, so identify the transmission before using the $31,400 starting figure as your budget anchor.

If you require an automatic

Toyota lists automatic versions of the GR86 and Premium. Mazda’s cited 2026 release limits the automatic to Grand Touring, in either soft-top or RF form. That restriction can move the MX-5’s price and body-style decision before you compare equipment.

Use power figures correctly

The GR86’s 228 hp and 184 lb-ft exceed the MX-5’s listed 181 hp and 151 lb-ft. That is a clear specification difference, but it is not a complete prediction of speed or enjoyment. Acceleration depends on gearing, vehicle mass, tires, transmission shifts, traction, road conditions and the driver. None of the cited official pages supplies a controlled, head-to-head acceleration or lap-time result.

Use the figures as a first filter for your expectations, not as a substitute for driving. A buyer who values the GR86’s published output should still drive the manual and automatic versions separately if both remain on the shortlist. An MX-5 buyer should test the exact soft-top or RF and transmission combination because the body style and gearbox are part of the purchase decision.

A step-by-step 2026 buying process

  1. Write down your non-negotiables. Record the number of usable seats, fixed roof versus open-air roof, manual versus automatic, maximum out-the-door budget and whether the car will be a sole vehicle.
  2. Build a like-for-like shortlist. For the GR86, specify base, Premium or Yuzu Edition and the transmission. For the MX-5, specify Sport, Club or Grand Touring, then soft top or RF and manual or automatic.
  3. Check official model information. Use Toyota’s GR86 page and Toyota’s model listing for current configuration details. Use Mazda’s January release for the published trim structure and its September update for the price-change rule.
  4. Ask for the exact window sticker. Confirm the VIN, model year, body style, transmission, MSRP, destination and handling, installed options and whether the vehicle was already labeled before September 15, 2026. For Mazda, ask whether the $300 adjustment applies to that vehicle.
  5. Verify local inventory. Manufacturer pages do not guarantee that a particular manual, automatic, RF or special edition is sitting at a nearby dealer. Call ahead and confirm the exact trim rather than relying on a generic model listing.
  6. Test-fit the people and gear you will actually carry. Bring the intended driver, passengers, child seat or everyday items. The official material here does not provide a cargo-capacity comparison, so a physical check is more useful than guessing from the body style.
  7. Drive the exact configuration. Evaluate clutch take-up, shifter reach, automatic behavior, pedal placement, visibility, seat adjustment, roof operation and ease of entry. A drive in a different trim or transmission cannot answer every question about your chosen car.
  8. Get ownership quotes before signing. Ask insurers for quotes on the exact VIN or trim and request written estimates for taxes, registration, dealer fees, accessories and financing. Reliability, maintenance cost and insurance differences are not established by the official comparison material used here.
  9. Compare final offers, not advertised starts. Put the two window stickers and two out-the-door worksheets side by side. Include destination, taxes and every dealer-installed item, and confirm that a promotional or older inventory price is actually available to you.

Questions the official specifications cannot answer

A careful buyer should separate established facts from questions that still need a test drive, an independent source or a dealer document.

  • TOP QUALITY MATERIALS: Constructed with a diecast metal body and plastic components, this model provides structural balance while allowing fine detailing across exterior features. With its custom styling and detailed finish, it fits well within collections focused on modified vehicles, particularly for enthusiasts of Japanese tuning culture and modern performance automotive design.
  • Real-world acceleration: no controlled GR86-versus-MX-5 test result is supplied here.
  • Ride and handling: horsepower and drivetrain layout do not establish ride comfort, steering feel, cornering balance or track performance.
  • Cargo capacity: the cited pages do not provide a directly comparable cargo measurement.
  • Rear-seat usability: four seats on the GR86 specification sheet do not guarantee comfortable adult seating or easy child-seat installation.
  • Reliability and maintenance: no long-term ownership data or maintenance-cost comparison is established.
  • Safety-test results: do not infer a safety rating from the body style or specification list; look up the current rating for the exact model year separately.
  • Insurance: premiums depend on driver, location, coverage, insurer and vehicle details, so obtain individual quotes.
  • Dealer availability: a manufacturer’s configuration list does not promise local stock, especially for a specific manual, automatic, RF or special edition.

Practical test-drive checklist

Use the first drive to answer questions the specification sheet cannot. Start with the driver’s seat: check whether the wheel, pedals and shifter can be positioned comfortably, and whether you can see out without an awkward posture. If the GR86 is under consideration as a four-seat solution, have the intended rear passengers sit behind the preferred front-seat position. If you need a child seat, install it rather than estimating clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an MX-5, operate the soft top or RF mechanism as the dealer demonstrates it, then check whether the roof choice fits your parking, weather and daily-use routine. Compare the view over the shoulder and the ease of entering and exiting with the roof in the position you will normally use.

Drive each transmission you might buy. In a manual, pay attention to clutch engagement and the shifter’s reach in stop-and-go traffic as well as on an open road. In an automatic, check low-speed smoothness, response when you ask for acceleration and whether the control layout feels intuitive. These are personal observations, not claims about every example of the model.

Finally, repeat the drive with the salesperson’s price sheet in hand. Make sure the car you enjoyed is the car whose MSRP and equipment you are comparing; a different roof, trim or gearbox can change both the price and the decision.

Which buyer should start with which car?

Start with the GR86 if your brief says “coupe plus occasional passengers”

The GR86 aligns with a buyer who wants a fixed-roof, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe and needs four seats on the specification sheet. Toyota’s higher published output may also make the GR86 the first test drive for someone prioritizing the stated 228-hp/184-lb-ft engine rating. Decide between manual and automatic after driving both where available, then verify the exact trim price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the MX-5 if your brief says “two-seat roadster”

The MX-5 is the natural first stop for a buyer who values two seats and a choice of soft top or RF body. The transmission decision is unusually important: Sport and Club are manual-only in Mazda’s cited release, while Grand Touring adds the automatic option. Select the roof and gearbox before comparing prices, because those choices move the MSRP substantially.

Do not decide from the starting MSRP alone

The lowest number in either manufacturer’s table describes a particular configuration, not every version of the car. The GR86 base figure does not represent an automatic or Premium configuration. The MX-5 Sport figure is for a manual soft top, while RF and automatic Grand Touring versions cost more. Mazda’s September 2026 adjustment and its stated destination charge further reinforce the need to compare the actual sticker.

Bottom line

There is no evidence-based single winner for every driver. Pick the GR86 when four seats, a coupe roof and Toyota’s listed 2.4-liter output fit your priorities. Pick the MX-5 Miata when two seats, open-air body choices and the roadster format matter more. Then confirm transmission, trim, window-label date, destination charge and local availability on the exact car you plan to buy. A back-to-back test drive is essential because the official specifications establish the differences in layout, output, transmissions and pricing, but not the real-world performance or comfort verdict.
