The right choice depends on the format you actually need. Choose the 2026 Toyota GR86 if you want a fixed-roof, rear-wheel-drive coupe, more engine output, and a second row for occasional passengers or extra gear. Choose the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata if open-air driving, a genuinely two-seat roadster layout, and a choice between a conventional soft top and a power-operated retractable fastback matter more than outright published power.
Neither car is universally better. They answer different questions about what a small sports car should do, and the most useful comparison is therefore about your roads, weather, passengers, roof preference, transmission choice, and budget—not a single winner.

The two cars in one glance
Both cars use front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layouts and offer a six-speed manual transmission, but their body styles create different ownership experiences before you even start the engine.

Body style, roof and weather exposure
GR86: a permanent coupe roof
The GR86 has a fixed roof. That gives you a conventional coupe cabin every time you drive: no roof mechanism to operate, no soft-top fabric to maintain, and no decision about whether the weather is suitable for an open cockpit. It is the straightforward option for buyers who want a sports-car shape but expect to use the car through changing seasons.
A fixed roof does not make the GR86 an all-weather vehicle by itself. Tires, local winter conditions, road treatment and your willingness to drive in snow or heavy rain still determine whether it works as a year-round car. The practical advantage is consistency: the cabin configuration does not change from one trip to the next.
MX-5 soft top: the traditional roadster choice
The soft-top MX-5 is the classic two-seat roadster interpretation. It lets you choose an open-air drive when conditions cooperate and close the roof when they do not. Buyers who see top-down driving as the central reason to own a sports car will usually find this configuration more aligned with their priorities than a coupe.

A soft top also asks you to think about storage, cleaning and long-term exposure differently from a fixed roof. Inspect the actual car, operate the roof yourself and consider where it will be parked. Those checks are more useful than assuming every owner’s weather or storage situation is the same.
MX-5 RF: a button-operated retractable fastback
The MX-5 RF (retractable fastback) is the middle path between the two body concepts. Mazda North American Operations says the roof opens or closes in about 13 seconds with a button press, giving the RF the character of both a sporty coupe and a convertible. That is a manufacturer statement for the 2026 model; it is not a timed test performed for this comparison.
Choose the RF when the roof experience is important but you prefer a powered mechanism and fastback appearance over a conventional fabric top. Compare the RF and soft-top cars in person, because the roof design changes the visual character and the way you use the cabin even though both remain two-seat MX-5s.

Seats, passengers and carrying needs
When the GR86’s second row matters
Toyota gives the GR86 a second row, while Mazda explicitly describes the MX-5 as a two-seat roadster. The GR86 therefore has a broader brief for a buyer who sometimes carries another person or wants an enclosed place for small items behind the front seats.
A second row is not the same as a full-size passenger compartment. Before buying, sit in every position you expect to use and load the bags, child seats, helmets or work equipment you normally carry. The available material does not establish current, like-for-like 2026 cabin or cargo measurements for the two cars, so a dealer inspection with your own passengers and luggage is the reliable way to settle the question.
When two seats are exactly what you want
The MX-5’s two-seat layout removes the temptation to treat it as an occasional four-person car. If your sports car is for you and one passenger, the roadster format can be an advantage: it keeps the mission clear and avoids paying for seating you will not use. If you regularly need a third or fourth seat, the MX-5 is the wrong layout regardless of trim or roof.
Engines and transmissions
Published power: GR86 has the larger numbers
Toyota lists the 2026 GR86’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine at 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Mazda lists the 2026 MX-5’s 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder at 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.
| Specification | 2026 Toyota GR86 | 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement and layout | 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer | 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder |
| Horsepower | 228 hp | 181 hp at 7,000 rpm |
| Torque | 184 lb-ft | 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm |
| Manual | Six-speed manual listed by Toyota | Six-speed manual; standard across the lineup, with Sport and Club manual-only |
| Automatic | Six-speed automatic listed by Toyota | Six-speed automatic available on Grand Touring, with steering-wheel paddle shifters |
The GR86’s published output advantage may appeal if acceleration reserve and stronger headline numbers are high on your list. The Miata’s lower output does not prove that it is less enjoyable: weight, gearing, seating position, steering response, roof position and the road itself all affect the experience. Only a back-to-back drive can answer the engagement question for you.

Both cars can be ordered with a manual transmission, so you do not have to choose one model solely to obtain three pedals. The important difference is how the automatic fits into each lineup. Toyota lists manual and automatic GR86 transmissions, while Mazda restricts the automatic to the Grand Touring trim and keeps Sport and Club manual-only.

If you want an automatic MX-5, budget and equipment are linked because Grand Touring is the required trim. If you want a lower-priced manual roadster, the Mazda Sport or Club keeps the choice simple. If you want a GR86 with an automatic, confirm the exact trim and equipment on the current Toyota configurator before signing a deal.
2026 pricing: compare trim and roof, not just the model name
Manufacturer pricing is date- and market-sensitive. The figures below come from the listed 2026 U.S. manufacturer materials and should be checked against the live configurator, current window label and local inventory. MSRP is not a dealer transaction quote, and destination charges, taxes, registration and dealer-installed items can change the amount you pay.
Toyota GR86 price snapshots

| 2026 GR86 Premium full-spec page | $35,100 | 21/30 mpg city/highway, 24 mpg combined | Separate Toyota full-spec snapshot; do not average it with the overview figures |
Toyota’s captured overview and full-spec pages show different Premium MSRP and fuel-economy snapshots. That is a reason to verify the live Toyota page, not a reason to blend the values into a made-up average. The full-spec Premium page also identifies 18-inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Toyota’s captured text does not state the tire size, so use the vehicle’s tire placard or an authoritative fitment source before ordering replacements.
Mazda MX-5 Miata listed starting prices

| Grand Touring RF | Automatic | $39,420 |
Mazda North American Operations states that the MSRP of all 2026 MX-5 and MX-5 RF models increases by $300 effective September 15. The listed figures above are the announcement’s starting prices; because the current date is after that effective date, confirm the adjusted amount on the live Mazda pricing page and the vehicle’s window label rather than assuming the table is today’s final MSRP.
Mazda also lists a destination and handling charge of $1,315, or $1,360 in Alaska, effective August 11. Add the applicable destination amount when comparing advertised prices, and keep it separate from taxes, registration and dealer charges. A soft top and RF are not interchangeable budget choices: the roof type changes the price before you consider options or automatic-transmission availability.

Choose the GR86 daily-driving brief when you need flexibility
- You want a fixed roof and do not plan to make top-down driving part of every outing.
- You occasionally need the GR86’s second row for passengers or gear.
- You place a higher priority on Toyota’s published 228-hp and 184-lb-ft output than on an open cockpit.
- You want the option of a six-speed automatic without moving to Mazda’s Grand Touring trim.
- Your normal routine includes mixed weather and you prefer not to manage a convertible roof.
Those advantages describe a use case, not a promise that the GR86 will be quieter, roomier or cheaper to insure. Current like-for-like measurements and ownership costs are not established here, so evaluate those items with the actual cars and your insurer.

Choose the MX-5 daily-driving brief when the roadster is the point
- You carry only one passenger and value a purpose-built two-seat format.
- You want the ability to drive with the roof open, either with the soft top or the RF mechanism.
- You prefer the lower-output roadster concept and are willing to trade published power for the experience you get from an open cockpit.
- You want a manual-only Sport or Club, or you specifically want an automatic Grand Touring.
- You are comfortable deciding between soft-top and RF pricing before comparing equipment.
The MX-5 is not automatically the better commuter because it is a convertible, just as the GR86 is not automatically more practical because it has another row. Your climate, parking, passenger pattern and tolerance for roof operation decide which brief fits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to test-drive them without fooling yourself
A short dealership loop can make either car seem ideal. Use the same process for both so the comparison reflects your life rather than the salesperson’s route.
- Bring the people and objects that matter. Take the passenger who will ride with you most, then try the child seat, work bag, camera case, helmet or groceries you actually carry. Do not rely on an older comparison page for current dimensions.
- Drive your normal road types. Include a rough urban street, a highway merge, a tight corner sequence and the road where you expect to enjoy the car. Note sightlines, ride motions, clutch effort, brake feel and whether the seating position suits you.
- Drive both transmission types if you are undecided. A manual and an automatic can change your workload in traffic more than the model badge does. For an MX-5 automatic, remember that the choice is tied to Grand Touring.
- Operate the Miata roof yourself. Try the soft top with the car parked, then operate the RF button-operated roof and observe whether the process fits your routine. Mazda’s approximately 13-second RF figure is a published specification; your real-world use also depends on where you stop and whether conditions allow operation.
- Check visibility and access with the roof in both positions. Sit in the driver’s seat, adjust it as you would at home and inspect mirrors, wind noise, entry clearance and the view over your shoulder. A roof that looks perfect in a showroom may not suit your parking space or commute.
- Get a written, itemized price. Ask the dealer to identify MSRP, destination, accessories, documentation fees, taxes and registration separately. Do not compare a Toyota web snapshot with a Mazda price that includes different charges.
Trim strategy: spend on the feature you will use
GR86
The GR86 overview identifies a base car, Premium and Yuzu Edition, while Toyota’s full-spec Premium page adds equipment context such as 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Decide first whether the Premium’s equipment is worth its price difference for you, then verify the exact 2026 configuration because Toyota’s captured pages do not show a single consistent Premium price snapshot.
If you are considering replacement tires, copy the size and load specification from the car’s placard or owner documentation. A tire model name alone is not enough to establish compatibility, and the captured Toyota page does not provide the size.
MX-5 Miata
Start with the roof: soft top or RF. Then choose transmission. Sport and Club are manual-only, while Grand Touring is the path to either a manual or the available automatic with paddle shifters. Comparing a Club soft top with a Club RF or a Grand Touring soft top with a Grand Touring RF without acknowledging the roof change can make the price difference look like an equipment mystery when it is largely a body-style decision.

What the published figures cannot answer
- Which car feels more fun: horsepower and torque do not capture steering, seating position, sound, gearing or the effect of driving with the roof open.
- Which has more usable space: the layouts are clear, but current same-method cabin and cargo measurements are not established here.
- Which costs less to own: insurance, financing, maintenance, repair rates and long-term reliability comparisons are not established by the manufacturer specifications above.
- What you will actually pay: MSRP snapshots can change, and dealer inventory, destination, taxes, fees and incentives determine the transaction.
- Which is faster in your conditions: no controlled, independent head-to-head test is cited, so do not turn the published output gap into a guaranteed real-world result.
Bottom line: match the car to the life you will drive
Buy the GR86 when a fixed-roof coupe, a second row, higher published engine output and the option of an automatic are the features that solve your day-to-day needs. Buy the MX-5 Miata when two seats and open-air driving are the reason you want a sports car, then choose between the soft top and RF before comparing trims and prices.
If both descriptions fit, arrange back-to-back drives on your normal roads, load your real luggage, operate the Miata roof and request itemized 2026 pricing. The better car is the one whose compromises you will accept every week, not the one that wins a specification sheet.
