The Toyota GR86 is easy to love if driving is the point: it pairs rear-wheel drive, a naturally aspirated boxer engine and an available six-speed manual with a chassis reviewers praise for its steering and balance. Living with it asks for compromises. Reviews describe a firm ride, persistent road noise, awkward entry and exit, nearly unusable rear seating and a small trunk. It makes sense as a driver-focused coupe; it is a tougher fit if comfort, quiet or everyday flexibility come first.
What makes the GR86 appealing to drive?
Toyota’s 2026 U.S. GR86 overview lists a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, and power goes to the rear wheels. Toyota presents the car as a compact coupe built around handling balance. Toyota’s 2026 GR86 overview
Edmunds praises the GR86’s steering feel, grip and balance. That character is the core of the car’s appeal: it is built to make a drive feel involving, rather than to isolate occupants from the road. The cost of that focus becomes clearer on rough pavement.
What is it like as a daily driver?
Ride comfort
Edmunds says the stiff suspension can become tiring on bumpy roads, while Cars.com reports that potholes and speed bumps unsettle the car. These are reviewers’ observations, not a guarantee that every road or driver will experience the ride the same way. Still, if your regular commute is broken pavement, the GR86’s firm setup is a meaningful trade-off. Edmunds’ GR86 review; Cars.com’s 2026 GR86 review

Noise and getting in and out
Edmunds describes constant, loud road and tire noise; Cars.com also notes intrusive wind and road noise. Edmunds points to the low ride height and long doors as making entry and exit more awkward than in a hatchback such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI. If you routinely carry passengers, park in tight spaces or spend long stretches on noisy highways, these details may matter more than the coupe’s handling strengths.
Can the rear seats carry passengers or child seats?
The GR86 is nominally a four-seater, but the rear bench is better regarded as occasional seating or extra storage. Edmunds describes limited usefulness for passengers and challenging child-seat installation. In its 2026 review, Cars.com reported that the GR86 failed three of four child seats it tested. That is Cars.com’s result for its specific test, not a general safety rating or a claim about every child seat.

Toyota’s own description of folding the rear seats to carry an extra set of tires captures their practical role: they can extend cargo capacity when they are not being used for passengers.
How much cargo space does it have?
Toyota lists 6.26 cubic feet of trunk volume for the 2025 U.S. GR86. Edmunds rounds that to 6.3 cubic feet and says folding the rear seats allows room for a set of replacement wheels and tires. The trunk can handle small errands, but its limited volume and loading opening make bulky or awkward items a challenge. Toyota’s 2025 GR86 brochure

Which trim and equipment details should buyers check?
Equipment varies by trim and transmission. Cars.com reports that the base model it reviewed lacked blind-spot warning and that manual versions lacked reverse automatic braking. Confirm the exact model year’s equipment on the specific car before buying; do not assume one trim’s driver-assistance features apply across the range.
Tire fitment also differs by trim. Toyota lists 215/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires for the 2025 U.S. Premium trim and a tire repair kit rather than a spare. Confirm fitment for the exact car before ordering replacement tires. Toyota’s 2025 GR86 brochure

Who is the GR86 a good fit for?
- Consider it if engaging rear-wheel-drive handling, a naturally aspirated engine and a manual option are high priorities, and you can accept a firm, noisy ride.
- Look closely at alternatives if a smoother ride is important. Edmunds prefers the mechanically related Subaru BRZ’s slightly softer ride, while also praising the GR86’s steering and balance.
- Choose something more practical if you regularly need quiet highway comfort, easy access, usable rear seats or room for bulky cargo.
Toyota cautions that its online specifications apply specifically to mainland U.S. vehicles and may change without notice. The cited specifications and equipment should therefore be checked against the model year, trim and market of the car you are considering. Toyota’s GR86 overview
