Toyota says the GR GT pairs the V8 with a single electric motor in a hybrid system. The cars remain under development, with Toyota targeting a launch around 2027—not confirming an on-sale or customer-delivery date.
What Toyota has confirmed
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s December 5, 2025 announcement names two V8 applications: the GR GT, a road-legal flagship sports car, and the GR GT3, an FIA GT3-spec race car based on the GR GT. Toyota describes both as under development.
The announcement is the strongest direct confirmation of the engine and its intended applications. It does not establish that a named executive made a separate interview statement, nor does it confirm the V8 for other future performance models.
How the GR GT’s V8 hybrid system is configured
Toyota says the GR GT combines its newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with one electric motor. The layout is front-engine, rear-wheel drive, with a rear transaxle. Toyota’s disclosed engine bore and stroke are 87.5 x 83.1 mm.

- Brand new box. Authentic detail. Real rubber tires. Detailed wheel design. Detailed under-chassis. Detailed interior, exterior. Comes in a blister pack. Officially licensed product. Die-cast metal body and chassis. Dimensions approximately L-2.75 inches long.
The engine uses dry-sump lubrication and a hot-V turbo arrangement, with one turbocharger in each bank. A carbon-fiber torque tube connects the engine to the rear transaxle, which integrates an eight-speed automatic transmission, a motor-generator and a mechanical limited-slip differential. These are manufacturer-disclosed design details, not independent test findings.
GR GT development targets
Toyota lists maximum system output of at least 650 PS and maximum system torque of at least 850 Nm as development targets for the GR GT. Those figures are targets, not certified final production specifications or independently measured results.

How the GR GT and GR GT3 differ
| Vehicle | Intended use | What Toyota has disclosed |
|---|---|---|
| GR GT | Road-legal flagship sports car | Hybrid system with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and one electric motor; Toyota has also disclosed drivetrain details and development output and torque targets. |
| GR GT3 | FIA GT3-spec customer race car based on the GR GT | Uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, with many structural components shared with the GR GT engine. Toyota has not provided final customer delivery dates, costs or market-by-market sales details. |
Toyota says it is preparing a support system for customers who race the GR GT3. The announcement does not specify the system’s terms or when customer cars will be delivered.
What Toyota says about the GR GT’s construction
Toyota describes the GR GT as a “road-legal race car” and says its development centers on a low center of gravity, low weight with high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance. The company also says the car has its first all-aluminum body frame and that the engine and other heavy components are positioned to support a low center of gravity. These are Toyota’s design aims and descriptions, not independently verified comparisons with other cars.

Is the Lexus LFA Concept getting this V8?
No such engine connection has been confirmed. Toyota’s corporate announcement of the same world premiere presents the Lexus LFA Concept separately as a concept aimed at a battery-electric sports car. It does not say that the concept uses the GR GT’s V8.
