Toyota GAZOO Racing gave its new flagship sports car a world premiere on December 5, 2025, then displayed an under-development prototype publicly at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 in Chiba from January 9–11, 2026.
The two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive GR GT is being developed as a road-legal race car with a twin-turbocharged V8, a transaxle-mounted electric motor, and a target of at least 650 PS. Toyota says development is continuing toward a launch around 2027, but it has not yet announced a final price, production volume, U.S. availability, or ordering process.

What happened to the Toyota GR GT unveiling?
The original expectation that Toyota would unveil the GR GT at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon is now outdated. The car’s world premiere took place on December 5, 2025, when Toyota GAZOO Racing showed an under-development prototype alongside the GR GT3 racing car.

The Tokyo Auto Salon vehicle listing identified the displayed car as the “GR GT prototype”. It described the concept as road-drivable but clearly marked the exhibited vehicle as not for sale. Toyota Times later reported that the two prototypes took part in demonstration runs and that the GR GT won the concept-car category of the 2026 Tokyo International Custom Car Contest.
Toyota Times reported approximately 270,000 visitors during the three-day show, making the GR GT one of the event’s major attractions. That figure is Toyota’s report and is separate from the vehicle’s technical specifications.
Why the GR GT matters to Toyota
Toyota positions the GR GT as the new flagship sports car of Toyota GAZOO Racing. More importantly, Toyota says it was conceived as a road-legal race car, rather than as an ordinary road car that was later given a more aggressive aerodynamic treatment.
That distinction informs the GR GT’s entire design. Toyota says aerodynamic engineers and exterior designers worked together from the beginning, with cooling and aerodynamic requirements helping determine the car’s packaging and shape. The stated priorities are:
- Low center of gravity
- Low weight combined with high rigidity
- Aerodynamic performance
The cabin follows the same philosophy. Toyota says it was designed around a professional driver’s seating position and visibility during limit driving, while still retaining enough usability for everyday road use. The GR GT is therefore intended to be more than a track-only special: it is a road-legal flagship built with racing principles at the center.
Toyota GR GT prototype specifications and targets
The figures below come from Toyota’s prototype development information. They are targets and in-house measurements for the vehicle under development, not final certified production specifications.
| Item | Toyota GR GT prototype target or specification |
|---|---|
| Vehicle role | Road-legal flagship sports car; Toyota describes it as a road-legal race car |
| Layout | Front engine, rear-wheel drive |
| Engine | 3,998-cc twin-turbocharged V8 |
| Hybrid system | One electric motor integrated into the transaxle |
| Transmission | Newly developed eight-speed automatic |
| Development output target | At least 650 PS and 850 Nm |
| Development top-speed target | At least 320 km/h |
| Body structure | All-aluminum body frame target |
| Weight target | 1,750 kg or less |
| Weight distribution target | 45:55 front to rear |
| Length | 4,820 mm |
| Width | 2,000 mm |
| Height | 1,195 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,725 mm |
| Front tires | 265/35ZR20 |
| Rear tires | 325/30ZR20 |
| Brakes | Carbon-ceramic discs |
| Suspension | Double wishbones front and rear |
The combination is significant because Toyota is not relying solely on engine output. The target power figure is paired with a relatively low center of gravity, a claimed weight target below 1,750 kg, rear-wheel drive, substantial rear tires, and a hybrid motor built into the transaxle. That layout should help centralize mass and provide electric assistance without turning the GR GT into an all-wheel-drive car—at least according to the current prototype description.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What the hybrid V8 setup means
The GR GT’s powertrain combines a newly developed 3,998-cc twin-turbocharged V8 with a single electric motor integrated into the transaxle. Toyota lists a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission and development targets of at least 650 PS and 850 Nm.
Those numbers should not be treated as the final showroom rating. Toyota has not published a final production power figure, acceleration time, emissions certification, fuel-economy rating, or final curb weight in the reviewed materials. The confirmed takeaway is the architecture: a front-mounted twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic, and one transaxle-mounted electric motor.
The transaxle location is also relevant to the car’s weight distribution and packaging. Toyota’s target is 45:55 front-to-rear, with the heavier proportion over the rear axle. That is consistent with the GR GT’s stated focus on traction, balance, and race-car-derived handling rather than simply maximizing straight-line performance.

Toyota revealed the GR GT alongside the GR GT3, but the two cars have different jobs.

The GR GT3 should not be described simply as the road-going version of the GR GT. Toyota describes the GR GT3 as a separate customer race car intended for FIA GT3 competition. The cars share a development direction and V8/twin-turbo concept, but they are designed for different environments and regulatory requirements.
In practical terms, the GR GT is the car intended for public roads, while the GR GT3 is the race machine intended to be sold to customers who want to compete. Toyota is developing both toward launch timing of around 2027, but that wording does not establish that both vehicles will reach customers on the same date.
When will the Toyota GR GT go on sale?
Toyota says development of the GR GT and GR GT3 is continuing toward launch “around 2027.” That is the strongest official timing currently available. It is not a firm on-sale date.
Toyota has not announced the following details in the reviewed official material:
- Final production specifications
- Final horsepower, torque, weight, or acceleration figures
- Retail price
- Production volume
- Allocation or reservation procedures
- Dealer distribution plans
- U.S. market confirmation
- Final homologation specifications
- Order-book opening date
That means online estimates of a $150,000–$250,000 price, a specific Nürburgring lap time, a fixed horsepower figure above Toyota’s target, or a confirmed U.S. sales strategy should not be presented as official facts. They may be speculation, but Toyota has not substantiated them in the reviewed sources.
The safest current description is therefore: Toyota is targeting a GR GT launch around 2027, with market availability, pricing, and final specifications still unannounced.
How the GR GT fits into Toyota’s performance strategy
The GR GT would give Toyota GAZOO Racing a road-car flagship above the company’s existing GR performance models. Its engineering brief is closer to a limited-production supercar than to a conventional high-performance trim: a dedicated twin-turbo V8, a transaxle hybrid motor, carbon-ceramic brakes, large staggered tires, and a body developed around aerodynamic and cooling demands from the outset.
It is also an unusually direct connection between Toyota’s road-car and racing programs. The separate GR GT3 is being developed as a customer race car, while the GR GT brings the same broad performance direction to a road-legal vehicle. That does not mean the road car and race car will share every component or specification, but it explains why Toyota is presenting them together.

The Tokyo Auto Salon display confirmed that the GR GT had moved beyond a private announcement into public exhibition. Visitors could see the prototype in person, and the demonstration runs showed that Toyota was willing to present the car as a functioning development vehicle rather than only a static design study.

It did not, however, turn the prototype’s targets into production specifications. The car shown at the event remained an under-development prototype, and the official listing marked it as not for sale. The event also did not establish a final price, production count, ordering process, or U.S. launch.

Bottom line
The Toyota GR GT has already had both milestones that are often confused in coverage: its world premiere happened on December 5, 2025, and its public exhibition debut happened at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026.
What Toyota showed is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat flagship built around a twin-turbo V8 and a single transaxle-mounted electric motor. Toyota’s current targets include at least 650 PS, 850 Nm, a top speed of at least 320 km/h, a weight of 1,750 kg or less, and a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution.
The car is targeted for launch around 2027, but it is not yet an officially priced or orderable production model. Until Toyota releases those details, the GR GT should be treated as a highly specified road-car prototype—not a vehicle with a confirmed price, allocation, or U.S. sales plan.
