Toyota presented it as a design experiment, not a production vehicle, with proposed equipment for carrying bikes and gear, recording trips, and tackling paved or unpaved roads.
What was the Toyota FT-AC?
Toyota introduced the FT-AC on November 30, 2017, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Toyota Japan described it as a small-SUV concept, while Toyota’s U.S. announcement positioned it around active outdoor trips such as camping, paddling, and mountain biking. Toyota framed the idea for travel on both paved and unpaved roads.
The name stands for Future Toyota Adventure Concept. Toyota group vice president and general manager Jack Hollis described its intended audience as “outdoor enthusiasts who want to dial up the adventure on their weekend getaways.” Toyota’s U.S. announcement and Toyota Japan’s concept description document the reveal and its design intent.
What features did Toyota envision?
Toyota’s release described a collection of concept features intended to support outdoor travel and share trip footage. They were proposed elements of the concept, not confirmation of equipment on a vehicle sold to customers.

- Length: 177 mm
- Width: 84 mm
- Bonnet removable to show the boxer engine

- Removable fog lights: Toyota described lights that could be detached and used as portable illumination.
- Infrared cameras in the side mirrors: The cameras were intended to capture images or video during an adventure, including in low-light conditions.
- Wi-Fi connectivity: Toyota said footage could be uploaded or livestreamed.
- Safari-style roof cargo rack: The rack emphasized carrying outdoor gear.
- Retractable integrated bike rack: The concept was designed to carry bicycles without a separate rack being described as necessary.
What drivetrain and off-road capability did Toyota describe?
Toyota’s concept announcement envisioned a gasoline-powered FT-AC with torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, terrain-response settings, and a four-wheel-lock function. The company also said a next-generation hybrid option could be offered. These statements describe Toyota’s proposal for the concept; the announcement does not provide engine output, transmission details, fuel economy, or measured off-road results. Toyota’s release includes the drivetrain description, and its related statement from Hollis discusses the concept’s outdoor focus.
Was the FT-AC a production vehicle?
No: Toyota announced the FT-AC as a concept and called it a “design experiment.” The cited Toyota materials describe an idea and its intended features, not a retail model with confirmed specifications. They do not establish whether a later production vehicle derived from the concept or FT-AC-specific accessories were released.

Accordingly, there is no substantiated FT-AC price, production trim lineup, tested fuel-economy figure, or real-world performance result to report from these materials. The concept’s roof rack, bike carrier, lights, and drivetrain should not be treated as production equipment or as evidence that accessories fit any Toyota model.

The FT-AC brought together two themes: practical-looking hardware for outdoor activities and technology for recording and sharing them. Its design suggested a vehicle built around trips that might leave paved roads, while its proposed cameras, connectivity, and removable lights extended the adventure theme beyond styling. That makes the FT-AC useful as a snapshot of Toyota’s concept thinking in 2017, rather than a buying option or a source of verified vehicle specifications.
