For the comparable 2026 sedans, the Toyota Corolla LE costs less to buy, includes a longer period of scheduled maintenance, and has the lower listed starting price. The Honda Civic LX uses one fewer gallon per 100 miles according to its EPA combined rating, and an Edmunds five-year estimate currently gives the Civic a small modeled advantage—but that comparison pairs a 2026 Civic with a 2027 Corolla. Your own winner will depend on the out-the-door price, insurance, financing, annual mileage, fuel prices, and how long you keep the car.
The fair comparison: 2026 Corolla LE sedan vs. 2026 Civic LX sedan
Trim and model year matter more than the badge on the hood. The cleanest like-for-like comparison in the available current data is the 2026 Toyota Corolla LE sedan against the 2026 Honda Civic LX sedan. Toyota’s official comparison page supplies the starting prices, EPA economy ratings, and included scheduled-maintenance coverage. Honda’s 2026 comparison document independently lists the sedan specifications and EPA figures.

At a glance: the numbers that matter
| Measure | 2026 Toyota Corolla LE sedan | 2026 Honda Civic LX sedan | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting MSRP | $23,125 (Toyota official comparison) | $24,695 (Toyota official comparison) | The Corolla is listed $1,570 lower before taxes, fees, dealer pricing, and buyer-specific incentives. |
| EPA city/highway/combined | 32/41/35 mpg (Honda comparison document) | 32/41/36 mpg (Honda comparison document) | City and highway ratings match; the Civic has a one-mpg combined advantage. |
| EPA combined rating shown by Toyota | 35 mpg | 36 mpg | EPA estimates are test ratings, not guaranteed real-world results. |
| No-additional-cost scheduled maintenance listed by Toyota | 24 months or 25,000 miles | 12 months or 12,000 miles | The Corolla’s listed time and mileage allowance is twice as long; this is included coverage, not a prediction of lifetime maintenance spending. |
| Edmunds five-year modeled ownership cost | $36,579 for a selected 2027 Corolla LE | $36,159 for a selected 2026 Civic LX | The $420 modeled difference favors the Civic, but the model years do not match. |
The mileage figures are EPA estimates. Honda notes that actual economy varies with driving style, maintenance, traffic, weather, load, and other conditions.

Purchase price: the Corolla starts with a meaningful advantage
The official starting MSRP gap is $1,570 in favor of the Corolla LE. That is the largest certain difference in the published headline figures, but it is not automatically your final savings. A dealer may discount one car more heavily, charge different fees, or have only higher-priced packages in stock. Financing also converts a price difference into a monthly payment and interest cost.
Turn MSRP into an out-the-door comparison
Ask each dealer for a written out-the-door worksheet for the exact vehicle identification number or an equivalent configuration. Request these lines separately:
- Vehicle selling price and every installed option
- Destination, documentation, electronic filing, and other dealer fees
- Sales or use tax, title, registration, and inspection charges
- Trade-in allowance and any payoff balance
- Cash incentives, finance incentives, and eligibility conditions
- Amount due at signing and total amount financed
Compare the two worksheets without allowing a trade-in or optional protection product to hide the vehicle-price difference. A lower MSRP can disappear if the available Corolla carries expensive accessories, while a Civic discount can narrow or reverse the listed gap.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fuel cost: the Civic’s one-mpg edge is real but usually gradual
Both sedans are rated at 32 mpg city and 41 mpg highway in Honda’s comparison document. The Civic’s 36-mpg combined rating is one mpg above the Corolla’s 35 mpg. That difference reduces fuel consumed over many miles, but it does not by itself determine total ownership cost.
Calculate your own annual fuel cost
- Estimate your annual miles, separating commuting, road trips, and occasional use.
- Choose a fuel-price assumption that reflects where you actually buy fuel. Use a range if prices fluctuate.
- For each car, calculate annual gallons as
annual miles ÷ combined mpg. - Multiply gallons by your fuel-price assumption, then compare the two results.
- Run the calculation again with your real-world mileage if you already drive a similar vehicle; EPA results are a standardized reference, not a promise.
For example, the formula is miles × fuel price ÷ mpg. Keep miles and price identical for both cars so the mpg difference is isolated. Stop-short trips, winter temperatures, high speeds, roof loads, tire pressure, and traffic can overwhelm a one-mpg laboratory difference.

Why annual mileage changes the decision
- Low-mileage owner: The upfront price and insurance premium may matter more than a small recurring fuel difference.
- High-mileage commuter: The Civic’s higher combined rating has more opportunities to save fuel, especially if most trips resemble the combined test mix.
- Mostly-highway driver: Because both cars share the published highway rating, do not assume the Civic’s combined advantage will appear at the same size on your route.
- Mostly-city driver: The published city ratings are equal, so traffic and driving habits are likely to matter more than the headline combined number.
Included maintenance: Toyota lists more coverage for the Corolla
Toyota lists 24 months or 25,000 miles of no-additional-cost scheduled maintenance for the 2026 Corolla LE. The same Toyota comparison lists 12 months or 12,000 miles for the 2026 Civic LX. This is a difference in included service coverage, not proof that one car will always have lower maintenance bills after the coverage ends.
What to verify before treating it as a saving
- Which scheduled services are included and which fluids, filters, inspections, or wear items are excluded
- Whether the allowance is limited by time or mileage first
- Where the work must be performed and what documentation is required
- Whether the specific stock unit and your region carry the same program terms
- What the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule requires after the included period
Get the maintenance schedule and program terms in writing. A longer included period can lower early cash expenses, but your long-term budget still needs oil services, tires, brakes, batteries, repairs, and unexpected work beyond the stated allowance.

What the Edmunds five-year estimate actually says
Edmunds’ live comparison, accessed October 13, 2026, estimates five-year ownership cost at $36,159 for the selected 2026 Civic LX and $36,579 for the selected 2027 Corolla LE. The modeled difference is $420 in favor of the Civic. Because the Corolla is a 2027 model and the Civic is a 2026, this is not a same-model-year verdict and should not override the matched 2026 specification comparison.
Costs included in that model
Edmunds’ True Cost to Own framework includes depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Its standard assumptions are five years of ownership, 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, a 10% down payment, and a 60-month loan. Edmunds describes the result as comparative rather than predictive; your credit, location, insurer, fuel prices, negotiated price, and driving can produce a different total.
Why a modeled winner can differ from the MSRP winner
- Depreciation can outweigh an upfront price difference if one vehicle retains value differently in the model.
- Financing assumptions spread the purchase price over time and add interest.
- Insurance is priced using driver, address, coverage, claims, vehicle, and insurer data—not a national constant.
- Fuel consumption accumulates with mileage, while taxes and fees vary by jurisdiction.
- Maintenance and repair estimates are projections, not bills guaranteed for every owner.
Edmunds also publishes a separate five-year estimate of $32,759 for a 2025 Corolla. The available 2025 Civic page does not provide an equivalent visible base-trim total, so that isolated figure cannot establish a 2025 Corolla-versus-Civic winner.

Build a personal five-year comparison
A useful comparison is a worksheet built from the same assumptions for both cars. Keep the horizon and mileage identical, then replace estimates with quotes wherever possible.
1. Lock the vehicles to equivalent specifications
Use the same model year, body style, drivetrain, and comparable equipment. Record the exact MSRP, destination charge, installed options, and stock number. Do not compare a discounted leftover vehicle with a newer, high-demand unit without recording the model-year difference.
2. Collect written purchase figures
Obtain an out-the-door worksheet from each dealer. Record the cash price, taxes, fees, trade-in treatment, down payment, and amount financed separately. If one offer requires a manufacturer-finance incentive, capture the required APR and term.
3. Compare financing on identical terms
Request loan offers with the same term, down payment, and purchase amount structure. Record APR, monthly payment, total interest, and any lender or dealer fee. A lower payment can simply reflect a longer term and higher total interest.
4. Get insurance quotes before buying
Use the same liability limits, deductibles, drivers, address, annual mileage, and discounts for both vehicles. Ask the insurer to quote the exact trim and vehicle identification number when available. Save the annual premium and any one-time policy fees.

5. Estimate fuel from your driving
Use the formula above with your annual miles and a conservative fuel-price range. If you can test-drive both cars on a familiar route, note traffic, speeds, temperature, and trip length; do not treat one short drive as a fuel-economy test.
6. Add scheduled service, tires, and repairs
Use each manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and local shop prices. Separate included services from services you pay for. Budget tires, brakes, batteries, alignment, and an emergency reserve instead of treating the first scheduled service as the entire maintenance cost.
7. Model resale conservatively
Depreciation is the purchase price minus the vehicle’s future sale or trade value. Use several realistic resale assumptions rather than one precise forecast. Condition, mileage, accident history, regional demand, and timing can change the result.
8. Add the categories and test the assumptions
For each car, add depreciation, interest, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Then change one input at a time—annual miles, fuel price, APR, insurance premium, or resale value—to see which assumptions can reverse the result. A decision that changes with a small assumption should be treated as close, not certain.

Which car is likely to cost less in common situations?
| Your situation | Cost factor likely to dominate | What the published figures suggest |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest starting price and plan to keep the car several years | Purchase price, taxes, financing, and early maintenance | The Corolla begins with the lower listed MSRP and the longer included scheduled-maintenance period. |
| You drive many miles each year | Fuel, insurance, tires, and depreciation | The Civic’s one-mpg combined EPA advantage may accumulate, but calculate it with your mileage and fuel price. |
| You finance with a rate-sensitive budget | APR, term, down payment, and total interest | The vehicle with the lower out-the-door amount is not necessarily cheaper if its financing terms are worse. |
| You live where insurance rates differ sharply by vehicle or address | Annual insurance premium | Get quotes; a personal premium can outweigh a small fuel or maintenance difference. |
| You are comparing a current deal on different model years | Discount, depreciation, equipment, and remaining warranty or coverage | Do not import the Edmunds 2026-versus-2027 result into a matched-year decision. |
These are decision directions, not promises. The same model can be the cheaper choice for one driver and the more expensive choice for another.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Using MSRP as total ownership cost: MSRP omits your taxes, fees, financing, insurance, fuel, repairs, and resale outcome.
- Calling EPA mileage a guarantee: EPA ratings come from standardized testing; weather, traffic, load, speed, and maintenance affect real consumption.
- Comparing different trims: Equipment, wheels, powertrains, and prices can change both purchase cost and economy.
- Mixing model years without disclosure: A 2026 Civic and 2027 Corolla are not a clean same-year test.
- Counting included maintenance as free ownership: The program covers specified scheduled work for a stated period; it does not cover every repair or consumable.
- Ignoring loan interest: Compare total interest, not only the advertised monthly payment.
- Assuming insurance is interchangeable: Use your address, drivers, coverage limits, deductibles, and exact vehicles.
- Using one resale forecast as fact: Depreciation depends on condition, mileage, market timing, and regional demand.
A practical buying decision
- Choose the exact 2026 trim and body style you would actually buy.
- Get two written out-the-door offers with the same options and no unrequested products.
- Obtain insurance quotes before placing a deposit.
- Compare financing offers using the same term and down payment.
- Enter your annual miles and a realistic fuel-price range into the mpg formula.
- Read both maintenance schedules and confirm the included-service terms for the specific vehicle.
- Run a five-year worksheet with low, middle, and high resale assumptions.
- Buy the car whose total remains acceptable across reasonable assumptions—not merely the one that wins one headline statistic.
Verdict
The 2026 Toyota Corolla LE is the stronger starting point for a buyer focused on purchase price and included scheduled maintenance. The 2026 Honda Civic LX has a small EPA combined-efficiency advantage, and Edmunds’ current five-year model puts the Civic $420 ahead—but that estimate compares different model years and uses standardized assumptions. For a defensible personal answer, compare matched vehicles with written dealer prices, insurance quotes, identical financing terms, your mileage, and a conservative resale estimate.
