Toyota confirmed in October 2025 that Century will stand alone as an ultra-premium marque above Lexus in its brand portfolio. The company has also described an ambition to make Century a global name. That confirms a strategic repositioning—not an announced international launch: Toyota has not specified markets, timing, or a future model lineup in the sources reviewed here. Calling Century a Rolls-Royce rival is a useful comparison of intended territory, not a competitor Toyota has formally named.
Is Toyota turning Century into a separate brand?
Yes. Toyota’s five-marque structure places Century at the top, alongside Lexus, Toyota, GR, and Daihatsu. The October 2025 announcement was reported by Toyota New Zealand, which quoted Toyota Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries describing Lexus as free to keep pushing forward while Century aims at “the high end” as “Top of the Top, One of One.” Toyota New Zealand’s account of the five-marque strategy frames this as a brand distinction, not simply a new trim level for a Toyota or Lexus model.
In practical terms, Lexus remains Toyota’s broader luxury proposition, while Century is intended to represent greater exclusivity and customization. Toyota has previously described Century as the pinnacle of its chauffeur-driven mobility portfolio. The new structure elevates that distinction at the corporate-brand level; it does not, by itself, confirm a new vehicle or a change to how Century is sold in any particular country.
Will Toyota Century be sold outside Japan?
Toyota’s ambition to develop Century from a domestic status symbol into a global name is explicit in its reported strategy. But the announcement does not identify any overseas markets, launch dates, dealers, or international service arrangements. It also does not set out a future model range. A global ambition should therefore not be mistaken for confirmation that buyers outside Japan can order a Century, or that a rollout is imminent.

The brand’s current identity is rooted in Japan. Toyota traces Century to 1967, when it introduced the name for a Japanese luxury chauffeur car. Its official website presents sedan and SUV body forms and associates the marque with Japanese craft traditions such as Nishijin-ori brocade and urushi lacquer. The Century official website offers brand context, but the material cited here does not establish a global retail footprint.
What does the Century currently stand for?
Century’s defining emphasis is chauffeured travel, especially the experience of rear-seat passengers. Toyota’s 2023 SUV announcement highlighted privacy, quietness, hospitality, and customization, including choices for colors, materials, seat configurations, and doors. That focus differs from treating luxury chiefly as a driver-focused performance proposition: the stated priority is a composed, personalized cabin and service-oriented experience.

In September 2023, Toyota introduced an SUV body type while saying the sedan would continue to be available. The SUV was announced as a plug-in hybrid with a 3.5-liter V6 and E-Four Advanced all-wheel drive. These are details from that Japan launch announcement, not confirmation of current specifications or availability elsewhere. Toyota’s 2023 Century World Premiere presentation and Japan launch announcement describe the vehicle and its intended role.
Is Century really a Rolls-Royce rival?
“Rolls-Royce rival” captures the ultra-luxury territory Toyota wants Century to occupy, but the available Toyota material does not show that the company formally named Rolls-Royce as a target. Nor does a shared ambition to serve the top end establish equivalent prices, customer demand, sales, service coverage, or market position.

A meaningful comparison will depend on what Toyota actually offers in each market. The useful questions are whether Century becomes available beyond Japan, how bespoke its ordering process is, what ownership and chauffeur support are provided, and how pricing and delivery access compare locally. Those details are not established by the brand strategy announcement, so a direct performance or value comparison would be premature.

At its September 2023 Japan announcement, Toyota listed a reference price of ¥25,000,000 for the Century PHEV SUV. That figure included consumption tax and excluded options and recycling fees; it is a dated Japan-market reference, not a current price or an international price quote. Toyota also stated a base sales volume of 30 units per month for Japan at that time. The figure describes the announcement’s planned monthly volume, not present production or evidence of global demand.
