The facility is a development and evaluation hub for batteries used across Toyota vehicle technologies—not a battery factory or consumer service center.
What the Toyota Battery Center does
Toyota describes the center as a place to develop and evaluate batteries in coordination with its North American manufacturing network. Its work is intended to span the battery-development cycle, from raw-material sourcing and customer applications through recycling. Toyota says engineers and technicians will assess battery performance and develop technologies for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and fully electric vehicles.
The opening announcement does not provide a detailed inventory of the facility’s equipment, test protocols, or quantified results. It establishes the center’s development and evaluation role, but not specific testing capabilities or performance targets. Toyota’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes the opening and stated scope.
How the Michigan center fits with Toyota’s manufacturing network
The Saline center is distinct from Toyota’s battery manufacturing facility in Liberty, North Carolina. Toyota says the Michigan hub will support battery evaluation for Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina, and Toyota vehicle plants across North America. Toyota reported that the North Carolina plant began production in November 2025. Toyota Motor Corporation’s November 2025 announcement gives that production-start timing.
#1 Best Overall
- Efficient, Energy-Saving, and Fast Charging: The TowerTop 12v battery charger offers 4 adjustable current settings (2A/10A/25A/AUTO) to meet your diverse needs. With a max charging current of 25A, you can fully charge a 100Ah battery in under 3.5 hours. Achieving an 85% charging efficiency (industry average 75%), this battery chargers is more efficient, increasing charging speed by 1640% compared to 2A car battery charger. Not only is it energy-efficient, but it also saves you a lot of wait time
- Fully Automatic Charging for Convenience and Safety: This 12 volt battery charger automatically detects battery status and starts charging automatically within 30 seconds if you forget to press Start. After a full charge, it enters pulse repair mode, turns off the screen to save energy, and maintains a safe voltage for long-term storage. If voltage drops, it restores full power. The smart battery charger also remembers your last settings, ensuring seamless operation even after a power outage
- All-in-One Compatible Design: Designed for 12V sealed lead-acid batteries in cars, boats, RVs, power sports, and deep-cycle batteries, including 12V STD, AGM, GEL, Wet, MF, EFB, calcium and deep-cycle batteries
- HD LCD Screen and 8-Stage Intelligent Charging: With true 8-stage smart charging (desulfurization, soft start, bulk charge, absorption, analysis, repair, float, and pulse maintenance), it optimizes battery life and repairs batteries without overcharging or damaging them. The HD LCD screen allows you to view the charging stage and parameters at any time rather than leaving you guessing, keeping you informed of the charging status
- Battery Repair: Independent desulfurization and repair buttons allow you to manually desulfurize and repair your battery to restore lost battery performance, helping to revive old/idle batteries and extend battery life. If your battery cannot be charged, you can try the "repair" mode to fix it. Note: It cannot repair completely drained batteries

Toyota has not published comparable production-capacity figures or detailed testing capabilities for these facilities in the cited announcements, so their roles—not scale—are the useful distinction.
University of Michigan research access
Toyota says it will open the facility and research access with the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center so other research partners can benefit from testing and evaluation capabilities. The opening announcement does not specify access terms, identify additional partners, or describe particular research projects.

What is known about the project’s investment
Toyota announced a planned investment of nearly $50 million for a Michigan battery laboratory in 2023. That announcement, updated October 8, 2025, described a lab planned for York Township at Toyota’s North American R&D headquarters and anticipated operations in 2026. Toyota’s later opening announcement identifies the operating center as being in Saline. The earlier figure remains a planned investment, not a disclosed final cost for the opened center. Toyota’s 2023 announcement provides the original estimate and plan.
What Toyota says the opening means
Toyota Motor North America R&D Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Keita Moritsu said the center is where Toyota’s battery-development leadership “expands to North America” and where it is “building its next chapter.” Group Vice President of Powertrain Jordan Choby said the facility would let engineers detect and resolve field concerns faster and closer to the source. Those are Toyota executives’ descriptions of the intended value; the announcement does not report measured improvements in response time or outcomes.
