The Toyota Avalon went through five generations in the U.S. before the model ended after the 2022 model year. Its biggest turning points were the 2013 introduction of a hybrid option, the 2019 redesign on Toyota’s TNGA platform, the first TRD grade for 2020, and the arrival of all-wheel drive for 2021. The dates below describe broad model-year eras; production and release dates can differ, particularly around the first generation.

How many Toyota Avalon generations are there?

There are five Avalon generations in the U.S. model history, spanning the mid-1990s through the 2022 model year. Toyota describes the model as discontinued and identifies the Crown as its successor in flagship-sedan messaging. Toyota’s U.S. launch context dates to 1994, while its model lineage records the first Avalon release in Japan on May 9, 1995. Those dates refer to different milestones, not conflicting model-year labels.

Generation boundaries are approximate. Toyota corporate history, lineage records, and U.S. model-year announcements do not always use the same dates, so the ranges below are useful eras rather than exact production cutoffs.

First generation: 1995–2000

A large sedan developed for North America

Toyota positioned the original Avalon as a North American-oriented flagship sedan. It was built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky and designed and engineered with U.S. Toyota resources. The car used a Camry platform but had extended dimensions aimed at the U.S. full-size-car category.

Toyota’s lineage entry lists representative Japanese-market grades with a 2,994 cc 1MZ-FE V6 rated at 200 PS, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a 2,720 mm wheelbase. Those are specifications for the listed Japanese grades, not a guarantee that every U.S. trim had identical equipment or output.

Second generation: around 1999/2000–2004

The boundary varies by source

Toyota corporate history describes the second-generation Avalon as a 1999 model, while the first-generation lineage dates extend through April 2000. That overlap is a reason to treat the transition as approximate rather than assign one universal changeover date. The available Toyota material does not provide a complete year-by-year feature ledger for this generation, so specific annual equipment changes are not listed here.

Fourth generation: 2013–2018

2013: first Avalon hybrid

The all-new 2013 Avalon adopted a different styling direction and driving character, and it was the first Avalon offered with Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive alongside a V6. Toyota’s 2013 launch release gave EPA estimates of 25 mpg combined for the V6 and 40 mpg combined for the hybrid. These are launch-era Toyota figures, not current ratings for all vehicles in the generation.

2014: backup camera becomes standard

For 2014, Toyota made a backup camera standard on all grades. The Limited grade’s camera also included dynamic guidelines. Toyota’s release for the 2014 hybrid listed a 40 mpg combined EPA estimate; that figure is Toyota’s estimate for that model-year hybrid, not a rating to apply automatically to every Avalon hybrid.

2016: distinct comfort and sport suspension calibrations

Toyota described fresh front styling, a new XLE Plus grade, and added equipment for 2016. It also specified two suspension calibrations: a comfort-oriented setup for XLE through Limited and a sportier setup for Touring. That distinction can matter when comparing how two cars from the same generation are configured.

2020: first TRD grade

Toyota introduced the first Avalon TRD grade for 2020, with sport-focused styling and chassis tuning. It is a notable configuration difference within the generation, rather than a separate generation.

2021: AWD and XSE Nightshade Edition

Toyota’s 2021 model-year materials highlighted the first Avalon all-wheel-drive offering and the XSE Nightshade Edition. These were later-generation differentiators; AWD should not be assumed on earlier Avalons.

2022: final U.S. model year

Toyota’s final-year materials cover the 2022 Avalon. The U.S. run ended after this model year, and Toyota now calls the Avalon discontinued.

What changed most across the generations?

  • Market role: The first Avalon was framed as a North American-oriented flagship sedan, with the extended dimensions distinguishing it from its Camry-platform relationship.
  • Powertrain choice: The major shift came in 2013, when Toyota first offered a hybrid Avalon alongside the V6.
  • Platform and design: The 2019 redesign moved the car to TNGA and adopted a lower, wider profile.
  • Configuration: Changes within a generation can be consequential: Toyota documented standard backup cameras for 2014, different suspension calibrations for 2016, a TRD grade for 2020, and AWD availability highlighted for 2021.

How to compare used Toyota Avalons

There is no evidence here to identify one universally best year. Compare the specific cars across model-level features and the condition of the individual vehicle rather than choosing by generation name alone.

  1. Confirm the model year and generation. Use the registration or vehicle identification information and verify the exact year; transitional dates and production timing can vary.
  2. Identify the powertrain. Compare V6 and hybrid examples where both were offered, and check the exact vehicle’s specifications and records rather than applying a generation-wide assumption.
  3. Check grade and equipment. Features changed within generations. Verify the trim and equipment on the particular car, especially when comparing years around the documented 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2021 updates.
  4. Consider the ride and handling setup. For 2016 examples, Toyota distinguished comfort-oriented XLE-through-Limited suspension tuning from the sportier Touring setup. For other years, verify configuration from year-specific documentation.
  5. Assess the individual car. Review maintenance history and obtain an appropriate inspection. Generation history cannot establish the condition, service record, or suitability of a particular used Avalon.

For detailed trim compatibility or feature confirmation, consult the exact model-year brochure or owner documentation; Toyota’s published history does not provide a complete annual equipment-change table for every year from 1995 through 2022.
