Mazda had the fewest 2024 recalls in a consumer-vehicle comparison that included manufacturers producing at least 30,000 vehicles: six campaigns. The same comparison listed Rivian with 8, Porsche with 13, Toyota and Tesla with 16 each, and Nissan with 18. Those are attributed publisher figures, not a definitive, independently reconciled NHTSA ranking, and a recall count alone is not a safety or reliability score.
The lowest recall counts in the 2024 comparison
Brady Reilly & Cardoso LLC’s 2024 comparison focused on consumer-vehicle manufacturers that produced at least 30,000 vehicles. That production floor is important: it keeps very small-volume brands from appearing artificially strong beside mass-market manufacturers.

The figures represent recall campaigns or actions, not the number of vehicles recalled. A single campaign can cover a large fleet, while several campaigns can affect relatively few vehicles.
Why other published totals do not match
A January 1, 2025 year-end summary from Pickup Truck Talk, attributing its figures to NHTSA, reported a different set of totals: Chrysler/Stellantis 72, Ford 64, BMW 36, General Motors 33, Mercedes-Benz USA 27, Hyundai 25, Jaguar Land Rover 20, Kia 19, Volkswagen 18, Honda 18, Toyota 16, and Tesla 15.

Brady Reilly & Cardoso LLC reported Chrysler 72, Ford 67, BMW 36, GM 34, Mercedes 28, and Hyundai 25, while listing Toyota at 16 and Tesla at 16. Because the sources do not explain how every campaign was grouped or which scope choices produced the differences, these lists should not be merged into one definitive ranking. For example, Tesla is 15 in one source and 16 in the other.
What a 2024 recall count measures
Campaigns, not vehicles
NHTSA reports both the number of recall campaigns and the number of vehicles affected. They answer different questions: campaign totals describe how often a manufacturer announced a safety action, while affected-vehicle totals indicate the scale of exposure.

Separate from remedy completion
NHTSA also tracks whether a remedy is available and whether owners complete the repair. A low campaign count does not tell you whether a particular recall is severe, how many vehicles are still unrepaired, or whether parts are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDefined by scope and method
NHTSA’s 2024 Annual Report: Safety Recalls, published in April 2025, reports by recall year. Its introductory long-run chart covers vehicle recalls and excludes tires, child seats, and equipment; individual charts can have different scope notes. A sound comparison therefore states the geography and regulator, recall year, unit being counted, included product categories, parent-company grouping, and whether results are normalized by production or fleet size.

Why few recalls do not prove the safest cars
Raw totals are influenced by fleet size, sales volume, model range, vehicle age, defect detection, and whether related issues are grouped into one campaign or several. The Brady Reilly & Cardoso comparison itself cautions that fewer recalls do not necessarily mean a manufacturer builds the safest vehicles. The available sources do not provide a fully reconciled low-to-high ranking adjusted for production or vehicles in service.
How to check your own vehicle for an open recall
A brand’s position in a ranking cannot determine whether your specific car needs attention. Use NHTSA’s official VIN lookup at NHTSA.gov/Recalls.

How to interpret the Mazda result
Within the cited comparison’s consumer-vehicle scope and 30,000-vehicle production threshold, Mazda’s six campaigns are the lowest reported total. That is a useful description of that dataset, not a universal claim that Mazda vehicles are safest or most reliable. For a buying or ownership decision, examine the specific model and year, affected-vehicle counts, defect descriptions, remedy availability, and completion information rather than relying on the brand total alone.
