This ranking covers engine designs and major variants built roughly between 2001 and 2026, and it puts the Ferrari F136 F from the 458 Speciale first because it combines high peak output with a rev ceiling that few road-car V8s have reached. The order weighs peak output, rev range, architecture, character and motorsport or production significance. Naturally aspirated means the engine has no turbocharger or supercharger, so each engine is judged on its own rather than on the performance of the car it sits in.
How the ranking was built
Each engine is judged on six points: peak power and torque, the rpm at which peak power arrives, displacement and specific output, architecture (crankshaft layout, valvetrain, injection and lubrication), character and intended use, and significance such as longevity, motorsport links or influence. Specifications are quoted only with the market, model year and unit they were published in, because the same engine code can carry different ratings in different cars.
- Units matter. US ratings use SAE horsepower (hp) and lb-ft. European ratings use metric horsepower (PS) and kW. One PS is about 0.986 hp, so 477 PS is roughly 470 hp. Conversions in this article are approximate and are labelled as such.
- Engine is not vehicle. Where a car has a hybrid system or a different drivetrain, the engine figure and the whole-vehicle figure are kept apart.
- Variants are named. Where an application changes an engine’s output or character, the variant is named rather than treating the family as one specification.
The ranking at a glance
The table lists the order used in this article, the engine as it is named in the cited sources, and the figures that could be tied to a named source and date. A cell reads “not stated” where the sources cited here give no comparable value; it is not a sign that the engine lacks the figure.

The ten engines
1. Ferrari F136 F (458 Speciale)
Ferrari’s 4.5-litre V8 in the 458 Speciale is the clearest example of a naturally aspirated road-car engine pushed to a very high rev ceiling. Goodwood’s 2023 feature gives 605 PS at 9,000 rpm, which is about 597 hp by conversion. Goodwood is a secondary editorial source, so the figure should be checked against Ferrari’s own technical specification before it is quoted as official. The engine’s rev range is the main reason it ranks first: its peak-power speed is well above the 7,100 rpm and 7,250 rpm peaks listed for the Lexus and Ford engines below.

Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
2. Chevrolet LT6 (Corvette Z06)
The LT6 is a 5.5-litre, naturally aspirated, flat-plane-crank DOHC V8 used in the current C8 Corvette Z06. Its flat-plane crankshaft gives it the high-revving character of a racing V8 in a production American sports car, which is why it sits second. Peak power, torque and redline differ by model year, so those figures should be taken from Chevrolet’s current specification for the car you are buying rather than from older articles.
3. Lexus 2UR-GSE
The 2UR-GSE is the engine that combines the most documented detail with road usability. Lexus USA’s 2019 release for the 2020 RC F rates the 5.0-litre V8 at 472 hp at 7,100 rpm and 395 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. Those are RC F figures, not a rating for every 2UR-GSE application. The same release describes a change to the airbox and intake path, including moving the secondary intake opening threshold from 3,600 rpm to 2,800 rpm, which affects how the engine breathes and responds in the mid-range.

Lexus Europe’s 2014 technical release for the earlier RC F gives 477 PS (351 kW), a maximum engine speed of 7,300 rpm and a compression ratio of 12.3:1. It describes Atkinson-cycle operation at cruising speeds and Otto-cycle operation for performance, and it lists titanium valves, forged connecting rods, an air-cooled oil cooler, revised exhaust headers and D-4S dual injection. The dual-cycle approach is the engineering story that a peak-power number cannot tell.
4. Ford Voodoo (Shelby GT350)
The Voodoo is Ford’s 5.2-litre flat-plane-crank V8, built for the Shelby GT350 Mustang. The flat-plane layout is uncommon in a production car at this price point, and it gives the engine a sound and rev character that most American V8s do not have. Output differs between the GT350 and GT350R and across the model years in which it was built, so check Ford’s specification for the exact car before quoting a figure.

5. Mercedes-AMG M156
The M156 represents the other route to a naturally aspirated V8: capacity and torque rather than rev. It is a 6.2-litre engine that AMG badges as a “6.3”, and readers comparing it with smaller-displacement rivals should use the true displacement. Its place in the top ten reflects a different design philosophy, not a higher rev ceiling. Power and torque figures depend on the AMG application, so take them from AMG’s specification for the model in question.
6. GM LS7 (Corvette Z06)
The LS7 is a 7.0-litre pushrod V8 developed for the first-generation Corvette Z06. It is the most useful engine on this list for comparing specific output, torque delivery, mass and packaging against the European DOHC engines above it. Its pushrod layout sets it apart from the overhead-cam designs in this ranking, and it is a reminder that a traditional architecture can still produce a very capable engine. Use Chevrolet’s model-year specification for peak figures.

7. Ford Coyote (Mustang GT and Dark Horse)
The Coyote is the most durable engine on this list in the sense that it has been developed for years in a single family. Ford’s 2026 Mustang specifications rate the modified Gen 4 5.0-litre Coyote in the Dark Horse at 500 hp at 7,250 rpm and 418 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm, and describe it as naturally aspirated. The GT is listed at 480 hp and 415 lb-ft, rising to 486 hp and 418 lb-ft with active exhaust. Those figures are for specific trims and equipment, so trim and exhaust configuration need to be matched when comparing them. The Coyote’s staying power comes from continued updates to breathing, variable cam timing and fuel-system design.
8. Audi 4.2 FSI (RS4 and R8)
The 4.2-litre FSI V8 is a high-revving DOHC engine that puts a European counterpoint into a list otherwise shaped by American and Italian examples. Output and rev figures differ between the RS4 and R8 applications, and this article does not quote a single figure because the variant has to be named first. Check Audi’s specification for the car and model year you are considering.

9. Porsche V8 (918 Spyder)
The 918 Spyder’s V8 is a naturally aspirated engine with a motorsport-influenced design, but it sits in a plug-in hybrid. The car’s total output includes its electric motors, and that figure is a vehicle figure, not an engine figure. Engine-only output should be taken from Porsche’s specification, and the engine’s place in this ranking rests on its design and rarity rather than on the car’s combined performance.
10. Maserati-applied F136 variants
The F136 family also appears in Maserati cars with different tuning and character from the 458 Speciale’s F136 F. It is included separately only because those applications differ from the Ferrari car. This entry does not repeat the 458 figures, and it does not assume the Maserati variant has the same output or rev range. Check Maserati’s specification for the car and year in question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ford’s Gen 4X crate engine is a different product
Ford Performance lists a 5.0-litre Gen 4X Coyote crate engine at 460 hp and 420 lb-ft on premium fuel. Its specifications include 12:1 compression, a 32-valve DOHC layout, direct and port fuel injection, Ti-VCT and an 80 mm single throttle body. It is a separate product from the Dark Horse engine rated at 500 hp, and its figures should not be used to describe the production Dark Horse. Check Ford Performance’s product listing for fitment and application details before buying.
Reading the numbers correctly
- Model year and region change the rating. The 2020 RC F’s 472 hp and the 2014 RC F’s 477 PS come from different markets and years, and neither should be applied to the other engine application without checking.
- Peak power and torque happen at different speeds. The 2020 RC F makes its peak torque (395 lb-ft) at 4,800 rpm and its peak power (472 hp) at 7,100 rpm. An engine can lead on one and trail on the other.
- Hybrid and whole-vehicle output are separate figures. The 918 Spyder is the clearest case, but any hybrid or turbocharged car sold alongside a naturally aspirated engine should be read the same way.
How to re-rank for your priorities
- If sound and rev range come first, move the Ferrari, LT6 and Voodoo up.
- If daily usability and ownership come first, the Lexus and Coyote engines have the most documented specifications and the widest range of applications.
- If torque and displacement come first, the M156 and LS7 move up.
- If motorsport heritage and rarity come first, the 918 Spyder V8 and the F136 family gain weight.
A reader who ranks by one of these priorities will get a different top three, which is the point of the exercise: there is no single objective measure of greatness.
