How the Tipoon pod was designed to expand
In a 2018 feature, New Atlas described the Tipoon Travel Machine as a pod carried on a utility trailer. Its shell expanded sideways and its upper section rose to create a larger camp configuration. The reported method was remote control, with a manual crank as a backup. The article did not explain the expansion mechanism in enough detail to establish deployment time or operating requirements. New Atlas’s 2018 description is the source for the design and specifications below.
The headline’s “three times its size” phrase has no stated measurement basis in that report. The article gives changing dimensions, but does not say that floor area or volume triples.

These are figures reported in 2018, not independently confirmed current production specifications. They show the change in width most clearly: from 5.6 ft closed to 10.5 ft fully open, with a partial-open setting reported at 8.2 ft. They do not establish an exact multiplier for the camper’s overall size.

Sleeping layout and onboard features
The reported layout was designed for up to four sleepers, using a fixed upper double bed, a lower bed that slid out, and a dining area that converted for sleeping. New Atlas gave these bed dimensions:
- Upper bed: 47 x 75 in (120 x 190 cm).
- Lower bed: 42 x 75 in (110 x 190 cm).
- Combined sleeping surface using cushions with the upper bed: 75 x 87 in (190 x 220 cm).
The same feature described a small kitchen with a sink, stove, and worktop, plus a bathroom area with a shower and sink. A removable toilet was stored below the sink. A 50-L refrigerator and water heater were described as planned options, not confirmed standard equipment.

The reported construction used an insulated poly-composite monobloc shell and a galvanized subframe. The article did not provide test results for insulation, weather resistance, or durability.
It was a pod for a trailer, not a complete trailer
Tipoon was described as sitting atop a utility trailer. The 2018 feature said the creators recommended a self-braking trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 2,425 lb (1,100 kg) or 2,866 lb (1,300 kg), depending on configuration. GVWR is a trailer rating, not the pod’s weight. Because the report did not state the pod’s final weight, those recommendations do not establish whether a particular trailer or tow vehicle is suitable.

Anyone assessing a camper-and-trailer combination would need current, verified weights and ratings for the pod, trailer, and tow vehicle, as well as applicable local requirements. The figures in the 2018 article cannot substitute for those checks.
Is the Tipoon available to buy now?
Current production, sales, and support are not established by the available reporting. New Atlas said in 2018 that the company hoped to begin deliveries that year and estimated a base price of €24,000—about US$30,000 at the time—while noting that pricing and equipment lists were still being finalized. That is a historical estimate, not a current price or confirmation that deliveries began.
A Kampeerzaken.nl report published approximately in 2023 said there was still no concrete prospect of series production. That report does not establish the product’s status today, so prospective buyers should seek direct, current confirmation of production, sales, warranty, parts, and service before making plans.
