New Atlas reported the design on April 17, 2025, describing a 70 mm electric ducted fan (EDF) and a 2,900 mAh battery in the model shown. The unusual layout separates two things often confused: how a boat is propelled and how it gets lift.
What is the HydraJet?
The HydraJet is a scale-model remote-controlled boat associated with CovaConcepts. In the configuration described by New Atlas, its 70 mm electric ducted fan sits above the hull instead of being submerged. The report specifies a 2,900 mAh battery for that model.
The video embedded with the report is titled “Boat Propellers are Overrated… The HydraJet Explained.” That is a provocative video title, not evidence that propellers are generally inferior or unnecessary.
How does a hydroplane rise and skim?
A hydroplane relies on its hull shape. As it gains speed, the hull produces lift and rises slightly, reducing how much of it presses through the water while it skims along the surface. It still has water contact; the term does not mean the entire craft flies above the water.

#1 Best Overall
- Incredible deep-V styling and performance
- Proven self-righting capabilities
- Completely ready-to-run with Spektrum Smart LiPo battery and charger included
- Powerful, water-cooled Spektrum brushless motor and ESC
- Factory-finished in two head-turning livery options
On the HydraJet, the fan supplies thrust from above the hull, while the hull’s shape is the reported source of its hydroplaning behavior. The fan’s position describes propulsion, not the mechanism that supports the boat.
Hydroplane versus hydrofoil
| Design | How lift is produced | Water contact and ride | Propulsion layout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydroplane | The hull shape generates lift as the craft moves faster. | The hull continues to contact the water; New Atlas says this can mean a bumpier ride than a hydrofoil. | Propulsion varies. The reported HydraJet uses an above-hull EDF. |
| Hydrofoil | Submerged foils generate lift and raise the hull above the water. | The hull rides above the surface on the foils; New Atlas contrasts this with the hydroplane’s greater water contact. | New Atlas describes an underwater propeller as the source of thrust in its hydrofoil comparison. |
These are different lift arrangements, not interchangeable names for any boat that rises while moving. The comparison is qualitative: the available accounts provide no measured ride, speed, or efficiency figures for either design.

- 【Brushless Watercooled Motor】: Powered by a potent 3554A Brushless Watercooled Motor, with automatic water cooling system, to extend the service life of the ship model.
- 【2.4GHZ 30MPH High Speed】: 2.4Ghz marine radio control system supports multiple rc boats to race synchronously! The max speed up to 30 MPH (48km/h) allow you blow other remote control boats out of the water! Ideal rc racing ship toys for Pool and Outdoor!
- 【Capsize Recovery Feature】: Self-Righting Hull Design gets the racing boat back to the game quickly while the boat is capsizing .
- 【Poor Signal Alarm】: The transmitter of the rc boat will issue alarm sound for you to make a return voyage or stop the boat on time while the signal becomes poor.
- 【Dual-Locking Cover Designed】: Designed with double covers to avoid infiltration of water during play and damage the boat.
Why put an electric fan above the hull?
New Atlas says the above-hull fan began as a cost-saving choice during development. An underwater motor would have required waterproofing more components, while locating the EDF above the hull avoided that added work. In this respect, the HydraJet is airboat-like in how it produces thrust, even though its hull is described as hydroplaning.
What does the HydraJet 701 listing specify?
Cova Concepts’ official HydraJet 701 product page describes a recycled-carbon-fibre boat and lists a product configuration that is distinct from the model described in New Atlas. Its listed electronics options and battery recommendation are:
Rank #3
- 2.4GHz remote-controlled ship can control the direction and speed of ship movement from a distance, making operation more convenient and flexible.
- Adopting brushless vortex jet technology, it provides more efficient and stable power output, making the acceleration and steering of the ship more flexible. The max speed can reach 30km/h, and the fast sailing speed brings a more exciting and thrilling gaming experience.
- The water-cooled circulation system effectively reduces the working temperature of the boat, ensuring its stability and durability during long-term high-speed operation.
| Listing option | Specification |
|---|---|
| EDF and ESC option 1 | FMS 70 mm 6S EDF with an 80A ESC |
| EDF and ESC option 2 | JP Hobby 70 mm 4–6S EDF with a 100A ESC |
| Battery recommendation | 6S LiPo, 2200–2900 mAh |
The page says the battery, receiver, and transmitter are not included. Its product description calls the boat “an electric jet-powered hydroplaning boat, unlike anything that came before.” That is the maker’s promotional wording, not an independent technical assessment.

The HydraJet 701 page describes a 5% refundable deposit rather than a confirmed in-stock retail purchase. It says the final total price may change and fulfillment depends on production requiring new tooling. The page displayed “Sold out” when accessed on October 8, 2026. These listing details do not establish that production or delivery has taken place, and order status can change.
What is not established about performance?
Neither the New Atlas report nor the maker’s product page supplies a measured speed for the featured model, independent test results, or a controlled comparison with hydrofoils or other boats. The video may show the boat moving, but it is not a substitute for instrumented testing. Claims that the HydraJet is faster or more efficient than a propeller-driven craft are therefore not supported by these sources.
