Grease is not one interchangeable substance: the right choice depends on the part and its operating conditions, and an NLGI number alone does not tell you whether it suits a wheel bearing, hub, hinge, or other mechanism. Start with the vehicle or equipment manual and follow its grease specification before buying or applying anything.
What is lubricating grease?
Lubricating grease combines a lubricating fluid, performance additives, and a thickener. The thickener gives it a semi-solid consistency. Grease is useful where lubricant needs to remain in place; in some applications, it can also help keep contaminants out. The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) explains grease and its uses in its FAQ.
That description does not make every grease suitable for every part. A grease must meet the equipment maker’s requirements for the application and operating conditions.
What does an NLGI grade tell you?
An NLGI grade describes grease consistency—how soft or hard it is. It is based on worked penetration measured at 25°C (77°F) using ASTM D217. A higher NLGI number means a harder grease. It does not, by itself, specify the grease’s full performance properties or establish that it is right for a particular component. See NLGI’s grease glossary and grade table.
#1 Best Overall
- Versatile Use: Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease with Syncolon is perfect as a tool grease, automotive grease, gear grease, and bearing grease for workshop or home use
- High Temperature Grease: This synthetic multipurpose lubricant resists water, salt water, dirt, and corrosion, making it ideal harsh environments
- Safe for Food & Sensitive Applications: As an NSF H1 registered food-grade lubricant, Super Lube is perfect for food processing equipment and is Kosher certified
- Maintains Stability Under Pressure: With a non-melting grease formula, Super Lube stays put without running, dripping, separating, or forming gummy deposits
- Premium Synthetic Lubricants: Super Lube manufactures specialized, effective, and regulatory-compliant lubrication solutions for industrial and mechanical settings
| NLGI grade | Worked penetration (units as stated by NLGI) | Consistency description |
|---|---|---|
| 000 | 445–475 | Very soft |
| 2 | 265–295 | Common mid-range consistency |
| 3 | 220–250 | Harder than grade 2 |
| 6 | 85–115 | Very hard |
These figures are classification values, not product recommendations. Choose the grade specified for the component rather than treating a familiar grade as a universal default.
How to choose grease for a car or other equipment
- Check the manual or manufacturer specification. Find the required grease type and consistency for the exact component. If the specification is unclear, ask the vehicle or equipment maker or a qualified service professional rather than substituting based on a label alone.
- Identify the application. A wheel bearing, sealed hub unit, chassis fitting, and other mechanisms can have different requirements. Do not assume that one grease suits all parts on the same vehicle.
- Compare the operating conditions. Check temperature, exposure to water and contaminants, component speed, load, vibration, and how the grease is delivered. These factors affect which product properties matter. Repsol’s overview of grease types and applications discusses these selection factors; the equipment maker’s specification takes priority.
- Check the product data sheet and compatibility. Confirm that the grease meets the required specification and is suitable for the component and existing lubricant. If changing products or topping up, consult the manufacturer’s guidance on compatibility and service practice.
Automotive wheel-bearing examples—and their limits
NLGI’s FAQ says most automotive wheel bearings require NLGI 2 grease, while some sealed hub units use NLGI 00 semi-fluid grease. These are examples, not specifications for every vehicle, bearing, or hub. Use the vehicle maker’s instruction for the exact part.

What an NLGI number does not tell you
Consistency is only one selection axis. Depending on the application, the specification may also address operating temperature range, water resistance, load or wear performance, corrosion protection, and compatibility with the component and existing lubricant. Color or thickener family alone is not a reliable basis for choosing a substitute.
NLGI’s High Performance Multiuse (HPM) program includes a core specification and additional properties such as water resistance, corrosion resistance, load-carrying ability, and low-temperature performance. A designation or certification can help compare properties, but it does not guarantee that a grease fits every machine; check the equipment specification and the product data sheet. NLGI describes the HPM program and its performance categories.
