A usable third row is more than a legroom number: passengers need headroom and a practical way in, and the SUV still needs space for bags when every seat is occupied. The models below are a buyer’s shortlist, not a ranked top 10: available evidence supports eight candidates, but does not support two more or a consistent cross-model test. Model years are identified so older reviews are not mistaken for current-model findings.
What makes a third row usable?
Start with who will sit there and how often. Children and teens may be comfortable in a row that adults would reserve for shorter trips. Legroom matters, but so do headroom, seat shape, the space available after the front and second rows are set for their usual occupants, and how easily passengers can climb in and out.
Check cargo with the third row raised, not just maximum cargo volume with seats folded. If you regularly carry a stroller, sports gear or several suitcases, a row that fits passengers but leaves little room for their belongings may not work for your family.
Eight three-row SUVs to consider
The candidates below have different kinds of evidence: some have manufacturer-published measurements, while others are supported by editorial assessments. Those sources do not provide a uniform adult-comfort or access test, so the comparisons are useful starting points rather than a definitive ranking.

2026 Honda Pilot: useful published measurements
Honda lists 32.5 inches of third-row legroom and 39.3 inches of headroom for the 2026 Pilot. It also lists 18.6 cubic feet of standard cargo space behind the third row. The row is a 60/40 bench, and Honda identifies flexible second-row arrangements. 2026 Chevrolet Traverse: cargo capacity is a standout
Chevrolet reports 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row and 98 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume for the 2026 Traverse, with seating for up to eight. The behind-row figure is notably larger than the published figures for the Pilot and Pathfinder discussed here. It does not, by itself, establish how comfortable the row is for adults; an Edmunds family review’s positive comments about adult space refer to the 2025 Traverse, not the 2026 model. 2026 Nissan Pathfinder: up to eight seats, less cargo room
Nissan lists 28.0 inches of third-row legroom and 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row for the 2026 Pathfinder. Seating is for up to eight with a second-row bench or seven with captain’s chairs. That configuration choice affects both passenger capacity and how people reach the back. 2026 Hyundai Palisade: roomy cabin, with a cited cargo figure
Edmunds describes the 2026 Palisade as quiet and roomy, including in the third row. An earlier Edmunds comparison, published via AP, gives 19.1 cubic feet behind the third row. Treat that cargo figure as the cited review’s measurement rather than a guarantee for every configuration, and check the exact vehicle’s specifications. 2025 Kia Telluride: positive review evidence, but for an older model year
In a 2025 family-SUV review, Edmunds described the Telluride as having ample third-row legroom and reported 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind that row. This supports considering the 2025 model, but it should not be read as a finding about a newer model year. 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander: roomy third row, including a hybrid option
Edmunds describes the Grand Highlander’s third row as roomy and notes the hybrid as an efficiency option to explore. The cited coverage does not establish a comparable third-row measurement or cargo figure for a like-for-like table. 2026 Volkswagen Atlas: access and space are editorial strengths
Edmunds describes the Atlas as offering adult-size seating in all three rows, easy entry and substantial cargo utility. Those are editorial assessments, not a common instrumented test or a set of directly comparable measurements in the cited coverage. These figures come from different manufacturers and editorial sources; they are not a complete, standardized comparison across all eight candidates. Use them to understand the reported space behind the raised third row, then verify the vehicle and configuration in person.

How to test a third row before you buy
- Bring the people and seats that matter. Take your regular passengers and any child seats you use. A published dimension cannot tell you how a particular person will fit.
- Set the front and second rows for everyday use. Have the usual drivers and second-row passengers adjust their seats first; do not reclaim their space to make the third row appear roomier.
- Try the entry route with child seats installed. Check whether the second-row seat tips or slides as needed, whether an aisle remains accessible, and whether passengers can enter and exit without moving installed seats.
- Seat third-row passengers and check posture. Have them sit in their normal position and assess headroom, knee clearance, foot space and seat comfort. Repeat with each relevant second-row arrangement.
- Load the cargo you actually carry. With the third row raised, see whether everyday bags, a stroller or sports equipment fit, and check for useful small-item or underfloor storage.
- Confirm the exact vehicle’s configuration. Ask the dealer to verify seat count, bench or captain’s chairs, and any trim-specific layout or cargo differences on the vehicle being offered.
Which candidates deserve a closer look?
- For published space measurements: the 2026 Pilot has listed third-row legroom and headroom figures alongside a standard behind-row cargo figure.
- For reported cargo space with all seats up: the 2026 Traverse has the largest cited behind-third-row figure in this group, and the 2025 Telluride also has a favorable cited figure, though it is an older model year.
- For editorially described roominess: Edmunds calls the 2026 Palisade and Grand Highlander roomy, and describes the 2026 Atlas as adult-size in all three rows with easy entry.
- For a caution about passenger and luggage trade-offs: the cited 2027 Explorer assessment flags a tight third row and smaller cargo area; Pathfinder’s published cargo figure is lower than those cited for the Traverse, Pilot, Palisade and 2025 Telluride.
These are ways to narrow a test-drive list, not universal fit guarantees. Prices, powertrains, efficiency, warranties and seating details vary by model year and trim; check current listings and specifications for the vehicle you intend to buy.
