The examples below distinguish experimental projects from production cars, rather than filling a ten-car list with familiar models. “Russian” here is geographic and industrial shorthand: most examples are Soviet-era, and the USSR was not the same state as today’s Russian Federation.
Experimental cars that did not become regular production models
These projects stand out for their intended roles and their limited development runs. A prototype or trial batch is not the same thing as a production model.
KIM-10 — experimental batch
The KIM-10 was planned as an affordable car for Soviet private buyers. A RetroReys museum listing says fewer than 500 were assembled in a 1941 trial batch. The listing also estimates that about 15 survive in the CIS, but gives no publication date; that figure is an estimate, not a current census. The listing URL is no longer accessible, so the survival estimate should be treated cautiously. RetroReys museum listing
VAZ “Tourist” — one-off prototype
VAZ’s “Tourist” combined a car with a camping-trailer concept. Rostec describes it as a single prototype that did not proceed to production. Its significance is the unrealized idea, not a production run. Rostec

VAZ-2122 “Rechka” — experimental amphibious vehicle
Rostec’s July 20, 2026 article search extract identifies the VAZ-2122 “Rechka” as an experimental amphibious vehicle photographed during trials. The article page could not be accessed, so the available record does not establish detailed specifications, production numbers, or whether any version entered serial production. Rostec
Production cars with unusual construction or character
Moskvich-422 “Buratino” — production utility car
The Moskvich-422 is notable for its wooden-bodied construction. The Moscow Transport Museum identifies a 1954 example with its wooden body preserved in near-original condition. That surviving museum car makes the model’s construction tangible, though the cited museum page does not establish total production numbers. Moscow Transport Museum

VAZ-1111 “Oka” — production microcar
The Oka was a compact, mass-produced car rather than a rare prototype. The Russian Design Museum lists production from 1987 to 2008, with VAZ, KamAZ/ZMA, and SeAZ involved, and reports about 700,000 made. Its small-car format and multi-factory history make it an unusual entry, even if it is better known than the experimental projects here. The museum record does not state a publication year. How these cars compare
| Car | Type and purpose | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| KIM-10 | Experimental batch; planned affordable private car | Fewer than 500 in a 1941 trial batch; RetroReys estimates about 15 survive in the CIS. Listing date unstated. |
| VAZ “Tourist” | One-off prototype; car and camping-trailer concept | Rostec says one prototype and no production. |
| VAZ-2122 “Rechka” | Experimental vehicle; amphibious design | Rostec’s July 20, 2026 search extract identifies it during trials; further specifications and production status are not established by that extract. |
| Moskvich-422 “Buratino” | Production utility car; wooden body | Moscow Transport Museum identifies a 1954 example; production total not stated by that source. |
| VAZ-1111 “Oka” | Production microcar | Russian Design Museum lists 1987–2008 production and about 700,000 made; publication year unstated. |
Why familiar models are not the focus
Some cars that might appear on a broader list are historically important but do not meet the same obscurity threshold. The Russian Design Museum says the VAZ-2108 “Sputnik” began production in December 1984, was the USSR’s first front-wheel-drive passenger-car model, involved Porsche specialists in development refinement, and remained in production until 2004, with more than 880,000 made. Those are notable distinctions, but its production scale and profile make it better context than a hidden curiosity. Russian Design Museum

Likewise, the Moscow transport portal reports that three GAZ-12 ZIM cars underwent state trials in 1951, covering more than 20,000 km under full load. That trial statistic is striking, but the source alone does not establish the ZIM as obscure. Unified Transport Portal of Moscow
