In June 2025, a new Tesla Model Y made a reported driverless trip from Gigafactory Texas to its buyer’s home in Austin. Tesla described the journey as an autonomous customer delivery; TechCrunch reported that nobody was inside. It was a filmed demonstration, not evidence that customers can use ordinary Full Self-Driving (Supervised) without a driver.
What happened on the Tesla delivery drive?
Tesla’s verified YouTube account posted “Tesla Delivers Itself to New Owner” on June 27, 2025. The company said the new Model Y drove from Gigafactory Texas to its owner’s home, about 30 minutes away, crossing parking lots, highways and city streets. Tesla’s Q2 2025 quarterly update also described the roughly 30-minute factory-to-home trip.
Tesla’s video announcement presented it as an autonomous delivery. TechCrunch’s June 30, 2025 report put the route at roughly 15 miles and said the car was empty. The report described visible maneuvers including highway merges, a right turn on red, a small roundabout and an unprotected left turn.
Was anyone inside, or was the car remotely controlled?
TechCrunch reported that no one was aboard. It also reported Elon Musk’s claim that the vehicle received no remote assistance. That claim is attributed to Musk; the available reporting does not independently audit every intervention or support condition during the trip.
#1 Best Overall
- Made of zinc alloy with ABS plastic parts
- 5.9 inch x 2.2 inch x 1.8 inch(size)
- The two sides of doors could be opened, front and back covercould be opened too
- You can pull back the car, then it can move forwards with Lights and Sound
- Very suitable as children 4 years and up toys for birthday,Christmas gift, new year. Also it can be a gift for your boyfriend
The sources do not establish all the preparations made for the route, whether other vehicles or external sensors helped prepare it, or whether the drive could be repeated reliably without intervention. A single successful filmed trip does not establish a safety rate, certification, or repeatable capability.
How does this differ from FSD (Supervised)?
The delivery demonstration should not be confused with the consumer feature Tesla calls Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla’s Q2 2025 update states: “Active driver supervision required; does not make the vehicle autonomous”. Its Gigafactory Texas experience page says the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over at any time, and that “The vehicle is not autonomous.” That page describes an FSD (Supervised) ride home after factory pickup—not a driverless delivery.

| Context | Who is in or responsible for the vehicle? | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| June 2025 Model Y delivery demonstration | TechCrunch reported the car was empty; Musk’s no-remote-assistance claim was reported, not independently audited. | One factory-to-home trip was shown and described. Route preparation and repeatability are not established. |
| FSD (Supervised) for customers | A driver must supervise, stay attentive and be ready to take over. | Tesla says the feature does not make the vehicle autonomous. |
| Austin Robotaxi service | Launched with a safety rider; Tesla later reported limited safety-monitor removal on some customer rides. | A separate ride-hailing service, not the same as a customer’s personal FSD-equipped car. |
How does the drive relate to Tesla Robotaxi?
Tesla’s Q2 2025 update said its Austin Robotaxi service launched in June with a safety rider and would expand over time. In its Q4 and FY2025 update, dated January 28, 2026, Tesla said it began testing driverless Robotaxis in Austin in December 2025 and began removing safety monitors from customer rides on a limited basis in January 2026. The update labels Austin “Ramping Unsupervised.”
Those later Robotaxi developments concern a separate service. They do not establish that driverless home delivery became a generally available option for vehicle buyers or that consumer FSD (Supervised) became driverless.

Can a Tesla buyer get a car delivered this way?
The available sources do not establish driverless home delivery as a standard customer option. Tesla’s factory experience page describes factory pickup and an FSD (Supervised) ride home, with a driver who must remain attentive. The June 2025 trip is best understood as a reported demonstration, not a delivery method customers can assume is available.
