Chevrolet did not sell a 1983-model-year Corvette, but secondary reports identify one surviving pre-production C4 test car from that otherwise missing year. The white coupe is reported to be at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is a compelling candidate for the rarest 1983 Corvette—not proof that it ranks as the rarest Chevrolet or car of any kind.
Is there really a 1983 Corvette?
Yes, but the distinction is between a retail model-year car and a development vehicle. Chevrolet skipped the 1983 Corvette model year in showrooms: the fourth-generation C4 was introduced as a 1984 model. The reported survivor is a pre-production pilot or test vehicle, not a 1983 Corvette that customers could buy. Modern Car Collector and MotorBiscuit both describe the unusual gap and the surviving car.
Why was there no showroom 1983 Corvette?
The C4 was still in development, and its launch was delayed until the 1984 model year. MotorBiscuit attributes the delay in part to emissions regulations and the change from a T-top roof to a targa top. Modern Car Collector also cites quality-control work and safety regulations. These are explanations reported by those outlets, rather than a fully documented account from Chevrolet in the material available here.
What makes this car so rare?
The rarity claim rests on two different counts: there were no retail 1983 Corvettes, and reporting says only one of roughly 43 C4 pre-production test cars survived. MotorBiscuit reports the 43-car figure and says the test mules were intended to be destroyed after testing; Modern Car Collector gives the count as approximately 43. Neither account supplies a manufacturer-verified tally, so the number should be treated as secondary reporting, not an official Chevrolet production statistic.

Modern Car Collector identifies the white coupe by VIN as 1G1AY0783D5100023. MotorBiscuit calls the survivor pilot car RBV098 and reports that it reached the National Corvette Museum in 1994. The two reports do not explain how the pilot-car identifier and VIN relate, so they should not be treated as interchangeable identifiers.
How did the 1983 Corvette survive?
The escape story is disputed. MotorBiscuit reports disagreement among enthusiasts and insiders about how the car avoided the destruction process. The available accounts do not establish a definitive sequence of events, so it would be misleading to present one rescue story as settled fact.

Where is the car now, and can it be driven?
Both reports place the car at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Modern Car Collector describes it as not road legal and says it was never offered for sale. MotorBiscuit also reports that it was unharmed in the museum’s 2014 sinkhole event. These reports establish the museum association, but not whether the car is currently on public display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the rarest Corvette ever?
It is reasonable to call this the rarest known 1983 Corvette: there were no retail cars for that model year, and one surviving pre-production example is reported. The broader claim that it is the rarest Corvette ever—or the rarest car of any make—cannot be established from these accounts. “Arguably” matters: the claim is strongest when limited to the missing 1983 Corvette model year.
