A Reddit post dated September 29, 2026, alleges that an extension cord was involved in a fire affecting a Rivian and a home. That account is secondhand and is not an official investigation, so it does not establish how the fire started. The safety advice is clear regardless: the U.S. Fire Administration says to plug a Level I EV charger directly into an outlet designed for its amperage and never use an extension cord.
What is known about the Rivian fire—and what is not
The September 29 post in r/Rivian says the poster heard from a neighbor that a fire began at an extension cord used for charging and spread to the house. That is a social-media account relaying what someone else reportedly said—not a fire department finding.
Comments in the thread also express uncertainty about the cord, connector, charging setup, and cause. The post does not establish the charging level, cord rating, electrical mechanism, injuries, property damage, or an official determination. It is therefore accurate to describe the cord as alleged to have been involved, not to say that investigators proved it caused the fire.
A separate Colorado fire should not be confused with the Rivian post. In a September 4, 2026 report, CBS Colorado reported that Greeley Fire Department investigators traced a September 2 house fire to an area near a 240-volt garage outlet and an extension cord powering an EV charger. Investigators ruled the fire accidental and attributed it to electrical failure involving equipment used to power the charger. They reported no evidence that the vehicle or its high-voltage battery caused or contributed to that fire. The report does not identify the vehicle as a Rivian or connect the incident to the Reddit account.

Can you charge a Rivian with an extension cord?
Do not use an extension cord for EV charging. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) gives this instruction for Level I charging: “Plug Level I EV chargers directly into an outlet designed to handle the amperage of the charging device. Never use a multiplug adapter or extension cord.” Read the USFA EV fire safety guidance.
Rivian’s October 17, 2022 R1T Owner’s Guide says not to plug the Portable Charger adapter into an extension cord, power converter, power strip, or other power adapter. That is guidance from a specific guide and equipment context; check the current owner’s manual for your vehicle year and charger rather than assuming every Rivian setup has identical instructions.

How to set up home EV charging more safely
USFA says EV charging is safe when owners use certified equipment and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. It recommends equipment certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and advises having a qualified electrician install a new dedicated circuit for EV charging equipment.

- Use the charger as instructed. Check the manual for the exact vehicle year and charging equipment; connect it directly as directed rather than through an extension cord, power strip, or multiplug adapter.
- Match the outlet and circuit to the charger. USFA says a Level I charger should plug directly into an outlet designed to handle its amperage.
- Choose certified equipment. Look for certification by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and use equipment compatible with the vehicle.
- Address reach with an installation, not an improvised cord. If the vehicle cannot reach the outlet, ask a qualified electrician about an appropriately located dedicated circuit or charging-equipment installation. The right solution depends on the property and equipment.
For an answer specific to your vehicle, use its owner’s manual and manufacturer charging instructions. Rivian also publishes model-specific emergency response guides for responders; these are not a substitute for the charging instructions intended for owners.

- Call 911 immediately. NHTSA says to contact emergency services if an emergency such as a fire occurs.
- Assume high-voltage components are energized. Do not approach or handle the vehicle’s high-voltage battery or associated components.
- Contact the dealer as well. Follow the manufacturer’s emergency guidance and instructions from first responders.
These steps follow the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s electric and hybrid vehicle safety guidance, which also directs owners to follow the vehicle manual and manufacturer charging instructions.
