The Volonaut Airbike is a real, single-seat flying motorcycle—not a movie prop, CGI concept, or renamed drone. Polish inventor and entrepreneur Tomasz Patan’s machine uses redundant jet turbines, a carbon-fiber structure, 3D-printed parts, and computer-controlled stabilization to lift one person off the ground.
That combination makes it look spectacularly fun and, at least from the ground, spectacularly unforgiving. The rider sits exposed above the propulsion system with no wings, canopy, or visible propellers. Volonaut says the Airbike can hover automatically and fly for up to 10 minutes. It also lists a price of $880,000.

Calling it a “death trap” would go beyond the available evidence: there are no cited reports of Airbike crashes or fatalities. But it is fair to describe the vehicle as a high-risk-looking experimental aircraft whose practical safety depends heavily on its redundant flight computer and the competence of its operator.
What the Volonaut Airbike actually is
The Airbike is a compact, single-seat personal aircraft designed to be flown from an exposed riding position. Instead of using a large propeller, ducted fan, or conventional helicopter rotor, it relies on redundant jet turbines for thrust. Volonaut says its flight computer automatically manages hover and stabilization, reducing the amount of constant control input required from the pilot.

- 2 Visors Included: Clear + Smoked and 1 Neck Scarf for Winter Use
- Streamlined Aerodynamic Design Reduces Wind Noise and Drag
- Advanced and Lightweight Durable ABS Shell
- Quick Release Clasp and Strap and Removable Inner Lining Pads
- Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards
That is the central engineering idea: replace the balance and control workload of a small experimental aircraft with software, sensors, and duplicated propulsion hardware. The rider still has to control the vehicle, but the computer is intended to keep it stable while hovering and maneuvering.
The structure is made from carbon fiber and includes 3D-printed components. The official launch footage released in May 2025 shows a rider flying the machine in a controlled demonstration. A later promotional video featured a rider dressed as a Star Wars scout trooper, an unsubtle reminder that the Airbike is being sold partly as a real-world science-fiction experience.
Volonaut Airbike specifications
| Specification | Manufacturer-listed figure |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Single-seat flying motorcycle |
| Empty mass | 30 kg (66 lb) |
| Maximum pilot mass | 95 kg (209 lb) |
| Flight time | Up to 10 minutes |
| Fuel | Diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A1, or kerosene |
| Refueling time | Under one minute |
| Propulsion | Redundant jet turbines |
| Stabilization | Fully redundant, flight-computer-enhanced system |
| Manufacturer-listed price | $880,000 |
The numbers need some context. A 30-kg empty aircraft is extremely light, but the 95-kg pilot limit leaves little room for a heavy rider, clothing, equipment, or any future changes to the production configuration. The advertised 10-minute flight time is also an upper-limit figure, not a promise of 10 minutes in every condition. Payload, fuel load, temperature, wind, maneuvering, and reserve requirements all affect actual endurance.

Volonaut’s promotional copy says the Airbike can reach up to 124 mph. However, the company’s technical specification table lists 102 km/h, or 63 mph, with the qualification “in compliance with FAA Ultralight.” Those are not interchangeable claims.
The 63-mph figure lines up with the U.S. definition of a powered ultralight under FAA Part 103 guidance. A powered ultralight must remain below 254 pounds empty, carry no more than five U.S. gallons of fuel, and not be capable of exceeding 55 knots calibrated airspeed in level flight at full power. Fifty-five knots is approximately 63 mph.

So the most responsible reading is:
- 124 mph: Volonaut’s broader maximum-speed marketing claim.
- 63 mph: the company’s listed speed for the configuration intended to comply with the U.S. ultralight rules.
It would be misleading to describe 124 mph as the normal legal operating speed of a U.S.-compliant Airbike without explaining that distinction.
Is it legal to fly without a pilot’s license?
In the United States, the answer may be yes—but only if the specific aircraft and operation qualify under Part 103. The FAA says an ultralight operator does not need a pilot certificate. That does not mean an ultralight can be flown anywhere, at any time, or without following operating rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Part 103 generally limits ultralight operations to daylight hours, requires the operator to maintain visual reference with the surface, and imposes visibility and cloud-clearance requirements. Airspace restrictions are just as important. An ultralight cannot operate in Class A, B, C, or D airspace—or in the surface area of designated Class E airport airspace—without prior authorization from air traffic control.
Volonaut’s specification page says no U.S. operating license is required if the vehicle qualifies as an FAA ultralight. The phrase if it qualifies matters. Regulatory status depends on the final aircraft, its weight, fuel capacity, speed capability, operating location, and the applicable FAA rules. A buyer would need to confirm the details with the manufacturer and the relevant aviation authorities rather than treating a website description as a universal permission slip.
Why it looks so dangerous
The Airbike’s visual design creates a very different risk impression from a small airplane or helicopter. The rider is plainly exposed. There is no cockpit around the pilot, no conventional wing to provide passive lift, and no large rotor whose behavior is familiar to most observers. Jet exhaust and high-energy rotating machinery are also much less forgiving than a motorcycle engine.

If the propulsion system loses power, the vehicle does not appear to offer the sort of glide capability associated with a fixed-wing aircraft. If the stabilization computer fails, the pilot may have very little time to correct the resulting attitude change. Those are reasonable concerns, but they are not the same as proof that the Airbike is unsafe.
Volonaut’s answer is redundancy. The company says the turbines and flight-control system are redundant, with computer-enhanced stabilization intended to make hovering manageable. That could reduce the chance that one component failure immediately becomes a loss of control. It does not eliminate risks involving fuel, turbine failure, software faults, sensor errors, weather, pilot training, maintenance, or hard landings.
The promotional videos demonstrate that the vehicle can fly. They do not establish a certified safety record, crashworthiness, long-term reliability, or safe operation in poor weather and uncontrolled environments. There is no cited evidence in the available reporting that the Airbike has caused deaths, so the “death trap” label remains an editorial reaction to its design—not a verified finding.
Ten minutes of flight is not a commute
Even if the manufacturer’s endurance figure is achieved in real-world use, 10 minutes is a short flight window. It is enough for a demonstration, a brief recreational flight, or a carefully planned hop. It is not much endurance for a vehicle that must take off, maneuver, leave a margin for unexpected conditions, and return safely.
The fuel options are unusually broad for a personal aircraft: Volonaut lists diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A1, and kerosene. Refueling is claimed to take less than one minute, which solves one logistical problem but not the larger endurance limitation. Quick refueling is useful only when the aircraft is already in a suitable, safe location and the operator can handle hot components, fuel, and jet exhaust appropriately.

How much does the Airbike cost?
Volonaut’s preorder page lists a full price of $880,000. The payment schedule is:
- $2,000 non-refundable reservation fee.
- $80,000 deposit to secure a build slot.
- $798,000 due when final assembly begins.
The reservation is not described as a binding purchase agreement until the purchase-agreement stage. That distinction matters when the product is an unusual aircraft with a developing production and regulatory picture.
Earlier 2025 coverage said the price and commercial availability were unknown. The current preorder page provides a price and a reservation process, but it does not establish that customer deliveries have begun. A contemporaneous report said Volonaut planned to enter production in 2026; the company’s current preorder information describes build-slot stages without giving a firm public delivery date.

Not in the practical sense. A conventional motorcycle can travel for hours, carry luggage, use public roads, refuel at established stations, and be serviced through a mature network. The Airbike appears designed for a very different use: short, controlled recreational flights by customers with exceptional budgets and access to suitable launch areas.

Its appeal is obvious to anyone who likes fast cars, motorcycles, aircraft, or science-fiction hardware. It offers the sensation of sitting in open air while the ground falls away beneath you. But its short endurance, operating restrictions, exposed rider, high purchase price, and unresolved production details make it a luxury experimental aircraft—not a flying commuter bike.

What would a buyer need to verify?
- Final aircraft weight and fuel capacity: these determine whether the vehicle can qualify as a Part 103 ultralight.
- Actual operating speed: confirm whether the 63-mph figure applies to the delivered configuration or whether a faster version requires a different regulatory category.
- Training: no FAA pilot certificate does not mean no training is necessary. A jet-powered hovercraft demands instruction and supervised practice.
- Maintenance: ask who will inspect the turbines, flight computer, sensors, fuel system, and structure, and at what intervals.
- Emergency procedures: understand what happens after a turbine failure, computer fault, sensor disagreement, fuel interruption, or hard landing.
- Delivery terms: review the purchase agreement, refund conditions, warranty, insurance requirements, and expected build schedule before paying more than the reservation fee.
FAQ
Is the Volonaut Airbike real?
Yes. Volonaut has released videos showing a rider flying a single-seat Airbike, and the company publishes specifications and a preorder process. The available evidence is promotional and controlled demonstration footage, not independent performance testing.
How fast can the Volonaut Airbike go?
Volonaut markets a maximum speed of up to 124 mph, but its technical table lists 102 km/h (63 mph) for the configuration described as compliant with FAA ultralight rules. Those figures should not be treated as the same operating claim.
Does the Airbike require a pilot’s license in the U.S.?
Volonaut says no operating license is required if the aircraft qualifies as an FAA ultralight. Part 103 ultralights do not require a pilot certificate, but they still face daylight, visibility, cloud-clearance, and controlled-airspace restrictions.

The manufacturer’s preorder page lists a full price of $880,000. It calls for a $2,000 non-refundable reservation fee, an $80,000 deposit for a build slot, and the remaining $798,000 when final assembly begins.
The Bottom Line
The Volonaut Airbike is a genuine flying machine with an outrageous silhouette and enough demonstrated capability to move beyond the concept stage. Its redundant turbines, automatic stabilization, 10-minute advertised endurance, and sub-100-pound empty weight are serious engineering claims.
It is also not a practical motorcycle with the ability to take shortcuts through traffic. The Airbike is an expensive, short-endurance personal aircraft with exposed propulsion, tight operating limits, and a safety case that still depends on manufacturer claims rather than a broad independent test record. “Terrifyingly fun” is a reasonable description. “Death trap” is not yet an established fact.
