It has the classic Gullwing silhouette, but it is not an original Mercedes-Benz 300 SL: a first-generation SLK32 AMG provides the reported chassis and supercharged V6 beneath a fiberglass body. It may fool a casual glance, but the donor platform and construction tell a different story.
What is under the Gullwing-style body?
Mercedes-Benz Worldwide’s 2021 account identifies the donor as a first-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG. That means the build’s modern secret is not merely a newer engine: the SLK chassis and running gear underpin a recreation of the 1950s coupe’s shape. The report says Sarkisyan selected the SLK chassis because its wheelbase matched that of the original 300 SL.
The same article describes a supercharged 3.2-liter V6 that was overhauled by NeedsWings and reportedly produced around 400 hp in this build. That is a reported modified-engine figure, not a factory rating or an independent measurement. Jalopnik’s 2019 coverage gives 350 horsepower for the SLK32 AMG engine as a donor-car specification; it should not be substituted for the approximately 400-hp claim about Sarkisyan’s overhauled engine. Mercedes-Benz Worldwide’s build account and Jalopnik’s report discuss those distinct figures.
The build also reportedly uses a KW suspension kit, Brembo brakes, HRE wheels and Toyo tires. Its reworked cabin retains SLK32 AMG instruments and controls, while original SL seats were reupholstered and selected components repurposed. These details are reported features of this particular car, not a parts or fitment guide.

How the body recreates the original
Rather than reproduce the original 300 SL’s steel chassis, the build places a new body over the SLK platform. Mercedes-Benz Worldwide reports that molds were made from all 33 body parts of an original 300 SL, then used to reproduce the body in fiberglass. The account says the windshield and rear window are genuine Mercedes pieces, with custom-built trim elsewhere. Those are descriptions from the published report, rather than independently verified inspection findings.
The design evokes the 300 SL’s signature upward-opening doors, but resemblance does not make the car an original or establish that every detail matches one. The original 300 SL was introduced at the 1954 New York International Auto Show, according to the same Mercedes-Benz Worldwide article. That account describes its Bosch mechanical fuel injection, 240-hp straight-six and top speed of up to 163 mph (263 km/h); those historical specifications are reported there rather than confirmed here against a factory archive. Read the account of the build and original-car context.

It is easy to confuse this car with other SLK Gullwing conversions
“SLK-based Gullwing replica” does not identify one unique car. Other conversions covered in the press use SLK320 donors, not the SLK32 AMG underpinning Sarkisyan’s build. Their engine outputs and equipment should not be attributed to his car.
| Car covered | Donor and reported specifications | Reported distinguishing details |
|---|---|---|
| Sarkisyan’s S-Klub LA-associated build | First-generation SLK32 AMG; supercharged 3.2-liter V6 reportedly overhauled to around 400 hp. The 350-hp figure is reported for the donor engine, not the modified build. | Fiberglass body; SLK32 AMG instruments and controls; selected original SL parts, as described by Mercedes-Benz Worldwide (2021) and Jalopnik (2019). |
| Red 2001 SLK320 conversion | SLK320 with a 3.2-liter V6 reported at 215 hp and a six-speed gearbox, according to Carscoops (2025). | Reported clues include wheel openings that differ from the original magnesium rims, modern Mercedes switches, a modern handbrake and a hood that opens the opposite way from the original. |
| 2000 SLK320 conversion | SLK320 with a 3.2-liter V6 reported at 216 horsepower and a five-speed automatic, according to Motor Authority (2019). | The report describes an original SLK interior, including ABS, airbags and air conditioning. |
The separate SLK320 details come from Carscoops’ coverage of the red 2001 conversion and Motor Authority’s report on the 2000 conversion. A reader-facing headline used for the former was “Could You Tell This SLK-based Gullwing Replica From The Real Thing?” Carscoops, February 4, 2025.

Clues that reveal a replica
There is no single visual test that applies to every conversion. Builders can retain different donor-car parts, so use several clues together rather than treating any one modern control or body detail as proof.
- Check the platform and cabin. The Sarkisyan car is reported to use SLK32 AMG instruments and controls, while the Motor Authority-covered SLK320 conversion retained an SLK interior. Donor-era switches and instrumentation can be more revealing than the exterior silhouette.
- Identify the engine and transmission. The supercharged SLK32 AMG V6 points to Sarkisyan’s build; the 215-hp, six-speed and 216-hp, five-speed-automatic combinations belong to the two distinct SLK320 conversions above.
- Look at construction and provenance. A fiberglass body over a later SLK platform is different from an original 300 SL. A convincing shape alone cannot establish the car’s identity; documentation and the underlying chassis matter.
- Notice detail differences, but treat them as clues. Carscoops noted wheel-opening shapes, modern switches and handbrake, and the hood’s opening direction on its 2001 SLK320 example. Those observations do not automatically describe other conversions.
Why the headline needs a qualification
The car can look convincing from a distance because it borrows the 300 SL’s distinctive proportions and Gullwing doors. But “you can’t tell” is too absolute: close inspection may reveal donor-car hardware, construction differences or other conversion-specific details. More importantly, this headline could describe multiple SLK-based projects. The SLK32 AMG donor and reported engine overhaul identify the Sarkisyan build; the SLK320 figures and telltales belong to different cars.
