Patent illustrations published in September 2026 may offer a tantalizing glimpse of a sports car that resembles the new Tesla Roadster—but they do not confirm its design. The patent concerns an active rear-wing assembly, and it does not identify the illustrated car as a Roadster.
What the patent illustrations show—and what they don’t
Carscoops reported on October 1, 2026, that illustrations accompanying a Tesla patent depict a low, fixed-roof sports car with an active rear wing. The patent, published by the USPTO on September 24, 2026, is for a deployable rear-wing assembly. It does not name the car in the drawings as the Roadster, so any connection is an inference based on resemblance, not confirmation of a production design. Read Carscoops’ report.
The patent description, as reported by Carscoops, says the wing can generate up to 700 kg (1,543 lb) of downforce at speeds above 100 mph (161 km/h). That is a figure attributed to the patent’s description—not a tested specification for a production Roadster.
How strong is this evidence of the new Roadster?
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Patent illustration, reported October 1, 2026 | A patent for an active rear-wing assembly includes drawings of a detailed sports car. | The application does not identify the illustrated car as the Roadster or confirm that it represents a production design. |
| Official Tesla Roadster page | No readable page content was available to confirm current details. Tesla Roadster page. | Current specifications, price, reservation status, delivery schedule, and production status. |
| Article matching this headline | A search result identifies an article by Amelia Martin with this headline. | The article’s images, their provenance, and its supporting claims could not be verified because the page could not be fetched. |
A confirmed Roadster prototype or an official Tesla reveal would be a different kind of evidence: it would explicitly identify the vehicle, rather than use an unidentified car to illustrate a technical patent. The material currently described belongs to the latter category.

What Tesla has said about a reveal
On Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said: “Speaking of which, we may be able to debut that in a month or so. It requires a lot of testing and validation before we can actually have a demo and not have something go wrong with the demo.” That was a forecast made during the call, not confirmation that a debut or production followed. It should not be read as a current reveal schedule. Read the Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript.

The accessible official Tesla Roadster page did not provide readable content, so current official pricing, specifications, reservations, production timing, and delivery plans cannot be established from it. The patent reporting likewise does not provide independently verified production-car performance figures. Until Tesla identifies the car or publishes current details, the drawings are intriguing evidence of a patented mechanism—not proof of what buyers will receive.
