The reported 500cc-class motor sits in a 1953 Jawa Perak frame, combining custom-machined components with parts sourced from Jawa motorcycles. Its reported power figures vary by tune, and none cited here comes from an independent dynamometer test.
What is the Bistella 500?
The Bistella 500 is a custom engineering project, not a production Jawa model. Autoblog reported that Foltis introduced the completed motorcycle in 2021. Coverage describes a 500cc-class engine with ten cylinders arranged in two five-cylinder radial rows and forced induction from a supercharger. Autoblog’s 2021 profile and RideApart’s project account describe the unusual configuration.
The engine is reported to use ten Jawa-derived 50cc cylinders. The result is called a radial engine because the cylinders in each row are arranged around the crankshaft, rather than lined up in a conventional inline bank or split into a V. Here, the two five-cylinder rows form what coverage calls twin radial “stars.”
How did a ten-cylinder engine fit in a Jawa frame?
The donor is identified as a 1953 Jawa Perak; MotoRidersUniverse specifies the 250 Type 11 Perak, while Autoblog refers to a 1953 Jawa frame. The choice of two compact radial rows was reportedly driven by the frame’s limited space and the aim of fitting as many cylinders as possible. The Kneeslider reports that the finished arrangement had only one millimeter of clearance, a figure attributed to that outlet rather than verified against a technical drawing.

In its Bistella 500 account, The Kneeslider describes the tight packaging constraint. That detail helps explain why the layout is more than a visual novelty: the engine’s configuration was a way to work within the available space of a vintage motorcycle frame.
Which parts were custom-made, and which came from Jawa?
The build reportedly mixes purpose-made engine hardware with Jawa-derived components. RevZilla’s technical account says the crankcase, crankshaft, supercharger assembly and connecting rods were CNC machined. It describes stock Jawa cylinders and pistons, as well as a Jawa transmission case and clutch; other reports also say drivetrain parts came from Jawa motorcycles.

A single carburetor reportedly feeds the engine’s intakes. The sources vary in how they list the components, so these are reported construction details, not a complete builder-issued parts inventory. RevZilla Common Tread’s technical description provides the specific machining and intake details.
What power does the Bistella 500 make?
Published figures distinguish the road-use setup from more powerful configurations. Autoblog reports 12 horsepower for road use, a limited 60-horsepower non-road tune, and Foltis’s calculation that an unrestricted configuration could reach as much as 120 horsepower. MotoRidersUniverse also reports 12 horsepower for road use and repeats the 120-horsepower calculation.

| Reported configuration | Reported output | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Road-use setup | 12 hp | Reported by Autoblog and MotoRidersUniverse; not an independently measured result. |
| Limited non-road tune | 60 hp | Reported by Autoblog; not the road-use configuration. |
| Unrestricted configuration | Up to 120 hp | Foltis’s calculation as reported by Autoblog and repeated by MotoRidersUniverse; not an independent dynamometer result. |
These numbers describe different reported configurations, not power available simultaneously in one road-legal setup. The 120-horsepower claim is a calculated maximum, not a verified measured output. Autoblog’s report discusses the separate tunes and attributes the unrestricted estimate to Foltis; MotoRidersUniverse’s account repeats the road-use and calculated figures.
What did the build take—and what is known about road legality?
MotoRidersUniverse reports that Foltis’s build process took two and a half years. The project also involved significant setbacks: in an Autoblog interview, Foltis said, “I blew the engine five times.” That direct account conveys the difficulty without suggesting a more precise failure timeline than the reporting establishes.

Autoblog reports that Foltis went through inspections, tests and homologation, and describes the motorcycle as road-legal. That is a report about the build process, not a current registration or regulatory record; the motorcycle’s present legal status, operating condition and tune are not established by the cited coverage. MotoRidersUniverse’s 2023 account gives the reported build duration, and Autoblog’s interview covers the failures and reported homologation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Bistella 500 stands out
The Bistella 500’s engineering achievement is the integration of a highly unusual engine into a motorcycle built around a vintage Jawa frame. Its twin-star layout, reported tight clearances and combination of custom-machined and donor parts make it a packaging and fabrication exercise as much as an engine experiment. Because the available accounts do not provide controlled comparisons with inline or V-twin designs, the significance is best understood in the specific challenge Foltis took on: fitting ten cylinders into this particular motorcycle.
