The engine uses a cylinder from a Wright R-975 aircraft radial, but the motorcycle is not a simple aircraft-engine transplant: its lower engine assembly and much of its drivetrain are custom-built.
What is the Hackel-Wright chopper?
It is a bespoke motorcycle built by fabricator Al Hackel, not a documented production model. New Atlas reported the bike on September 19, 2024, and Startup Selfie followed on September 20, 2024. Neither account establishes a production run, retail availability, or a kit for building one.
The chopper’s striking specification is a reported 1,700cc displacement in a single-cylinder engine. That cylinder comes from a Wright R-975 Whirlwind radial aircraft engine. The aircraft-derived cylinder is only one part of the story: Hackel designed and fabricated a new engine assembly around it.
How does an aircraft cylinder become a motorcycle engine?
A radial engine’s cylinder is designed to work as part of an aircraft engine, not as a ready-made motorcycle powerplant. The reporting describes extensive work below the salvaged cylinder, including a new crankshaft, connecting rod, engine case, and valve train. New Atlas specifies a five-piece crankshaft; it also reports that Justin Leineweber ground the custom camshaft.

That makes the Hackel-Wright a custom engine design and fabrication project, not a bolt-on engine swap. The 1,700cc figure is the reported displacement of the motorcycle engine. It should not be confused with output figures associated with the Wright R-975 aircraft-engine family: New Atlas says the chopper’s power figures were not confirmed.
Why does it need a kickstarter?
The motorcycle is reported to have no starting method other than its kickstarter. The sources do not provide a verified starting procedure or details such as compression, so there is no basis for prescribing a technique or claiming how much force it takes. The unusual displacement and aircraft-cylinder origin make the kickstarting premise memorable, but they do not establish any particular starting difficulty beyond the fact that this bike is kick-start-only.

How are the transmission and three chains arranged?
The Hackel-Wright reportedly pairs a 1947 Harley four-speed transmission with a manual four-speed gearbox and three separate chains. Each chain serves a different function:
- Primary drive: A duplex chain connects the crankshaft to the transmission.
- Rear-wheel drive: A chain carries drive from the transmission to the rear wheel.
- Foot-clutch linkage: A third chain is part of the foot-clutch arrangement.
This is a reported description of this custom motorcycle, not a compatibility guide. The accounts do not establish that standard Harley parts, replacement chains, or other components will fit it.

What other parts make this build distinctive?
Reports describe a Girder fork based on the Vincent Girdraulic design and a Toyota Matrix rear drum brake. The custom fuel tank is shaped around the cylinder head and hand shifter, and Jesse Briggs of Maritimer Glassworks made custom glass pieces.
Those details help show how extensively the bike was tailored around its unusual engine and controls. They do not establish that off-the-shelf parts from the named designs or vehicles are interchangeable with the components on this build.

What is it like to ride?
New Atlas attributes this description to Hackel: “Equal parts abject terror and unbelievable euphoria. It will shake your fittings loose, but tracks smooth down the road.” That is Hackel’s quoted impression, not an independent road test or a published measurement of the motorcycle’s performance.
Has the chopper been shown or put on sale?
The motorcycle was reported at the 2024 Handbuilt Show and One Moto Show. Those are past appearances; they do not establish where the bike is now or whether it is currently available to see. The available reports do not identify competing versions, purchasable variants, or a retail offering.
