Ferrari traces its Prancing Horse to Francesco Baracca, an Italian First World War aviator and national hero. According to Ferrari’s historical account, Baracca’s family suggested the horse to Enzo Ferrari; he kept it black and placed it on a yellow background to represent Modena. The emblem first appeared on a motorcycle in July 1932, before making its debut on Scuderia Ferrari’s Alfa Romeo race cars at the Spa 24 Hours.
Was the Prancing Horse originally Francesco Baracca’s?
Yes. Ferrari says the horse was associated with Francesco Baracca, a celebrated Italian aviator who served in the First World War. After Baracca’s death, his family suggested that Enzo Ferrari adopt the emblem as a good-luck symbol. A Ferrari retrospective identifies Baracca’s mother as the person who made the suggestion.
This account comes from Ferrari’s own historical materials. They do not independently establish the exact circumstances or wording of the exchange, so the familiar origin story is best understood as Ferrari’s account rather than a fully documented conversation. Ferrari’s history of the emblem and its retrospective on Ferrari at Spa describe the connection to Baracca and his family.
Why is Ferrari’s horse black on yellow?
Enzo Ferrari retained the horse in black and added a yellow field. Ferrari explains that yellow represents Modena, Enzo Ferrari’s home city. The early badge also carried the Scuderia’s initials and the Italian tricolor across the top.

In a 2022 article, Ferrari attributes this explanation to Enzo: “the Cavallino was and has remained black. I added the Canary yellow background which is the colour of Modena.” The quotation is reproduced by Ferrari; it is not presented as a separately inspected archival document. Ferrari’s article on the yellow background and the emblem’s origins gives the quote and describes the design.
When did the Prancing Horse first appear?
Ferrari dates the emblem’s first reported appearance to 3 July 1932, on a motorcycle at the Circuito di Pontedera. Its first appearance on Scuderia Ferrari cars followed six days later, on 9 July, at the Spa 24 Hours in Belgium. Ferrari’s account of the emblem’s return to the track gives both dates.

The first Scuderia Ferrari cars to carry the badge
Those Spa entries were Alfa Romeo 8C 2300s, not Ferrari-built cars. Scuderia Ferrari was competing with Alfa Romeo cars at the time. Ferrari says Antonio Brivio and Eugenio Siena won the race, while the team’s other pairing, Piero Taruffi and Guido d’Ippolito, finished second. The result made the badge’s first appearance on the team’s cars a first-and-second finish, as reported in Ferrari’s historical account.
