There is no definitive ranking of America’s greatest luxury cars: a coach-built limousine, a lavish postwar sedan, a personal-luxury coupe and a two-seat roadster served different purposes. This editorial list follows the story from early prestige cars to later experiments in comfort and performance, selecting 11 notable models for their craftsmanship, features, historical influence or place in the evolution of American luxury. It is not a valuation guide or a claim that these are the only cars deserving recognition.
How these cars were selected
The list spans distinct eras and roles rather than treating every car as a direct rival. The criteria are historical significance, coachwork and craftsmanship, luxury equipment, design influence, and the model’s place in its maker’s history. Museum collections help establish that these cars are notable artifacts, not that they occupy an objectively provable top 11.
11 notable American luxury cars
1. 1931 Duesenberg Model J
The Model J represents the scale of ambition associated with classic-era American luxury. Its place among notable luxury artifacts at The Henry Ford makes it a strong early marker for a list that includes both factory-built cars and coach-built prestige machines. The museum’s collection listing identifies a 1931 Model J convertible.
2. 1932 Duesenberg SJ
The SJ belongs to the same classic-era world as the Model J, but stands as a distinct model in its own right. The American Heritage Museum includes the 1932 SJ in its classic-era material. Taken together, the Duesenbergs show why early American luxury cannot be reduced to size or standard equipment alone: craftsmanship and the ambition to create an exceptional automobile mattered too.

3. Packard Twelve
Packard was a major American luxury marque between the world wars. Its Twelve—originally called the Twin Six—is one of the models that anchors the company’s prestige history. America’s Packard Museum highlights it alongside the Standard and Super Eight as a defining Packard series.
4. Packard One-Twenty
The One-Twenty illustrates a different luxury strategy: expanding a prestigious marque’s reach rather than limiting it to its most expensive offerings. Packard launched it in 1935 as a lower-priced “junior” model. According to America’s Packard Museum, it helped broaden the brand’s appeal during the Great Depression.
5. Lincoln Continental (1940–1948)
The classic Lincoln Continental is one of the marque’s key design periods. Lincoln’s heritage museum places the 1940–48 cars within a broader history that includes coach-built Lincolns of the 1920s and 1930s. The model’s significance is therefore not just as a luxury car, but as part of a continuing design story at Lincoln.

6. 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II
The Mark II is a postwar Lincoln milestone, distinct from the earlier Continental. The Lincoln Motor Car Heritage Museum identifies it as a notable period in the marque’s history, and The Henry Ford lists a 1956 Mark II sedan among its luxury artifacts. Its inclusion captures a moment when Lincoln presented a new flagship after the classic Continental era.
7. 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham
The Eldorado Brougham made luxury equipment a central part of its appeal. General Motors describes it as hand-built and limited-edition, with a 365-cubic-inch V8 rated at 325 horsepower. Its standard features included memory seats, cruise control, power windows, air conditioning, a transistorized radio and an automatic trunk opener.
GM reports that 400 were built in 1957 and gives the 1957 base price as $13,074. Those figures apply to this model year and car, not to Eldorados generally. The combination of limited production and an unusually extensive equipment list makes the Brougham a clear example of postwar American luxury’s emphasis on comfort and convenience.

8. 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz
The Eldorado Biarritz represents Cadillac’s open-top luxury in the late 1950s. The Henry Ford identifies a 1959 Biarritz convertible among its luxury artifacts. Its inclusion offers a useful contrast with the Brougham: both belong to Cadillac’s Eldorado line, but one is a convertible and the other a hand-built, feature-rich sedan.
9. 1961–1963 Lincoln models
Lincoln’s 1961–63 cars mark another important design shift. The Lincoln Motor Car Heritage Museum describes them as trend-setting, making this period a notable chapter between the Mark II and later luxury offerings. They belong on a broad historical list because American luxury was changing not only through equipment, but also through the design language of its flagship cars.
10. Cadillac Allanté (1987–1993)
The Allanté took Cadillac luxury in a more personal direction: it was a two-seat roadster, produced from 1987 to 1993. The Cadillac & LaSalle Museum notes that it came with a cloth convertible top and a removable aluminum hardtop. Its compact, open-air format makes it a different proposition from the large sedans and coupes that define much of American luxury history.

11. 2002 Cadillac Eldorado Collector Series
The 2002 Eldorado Collector Series belongs here as the final chapter of a long-running nameplate, not as a claim that it was the last American luxury car. The Cadillac & LaSalle Museum identifies 2002 as the Eldorado’s final year and the model’s 50th anniversary; Cadillac’s own legacy page also says the Eldorado was discontinued in 2002. Its place in the list is about continuity and closure: the Eldorado name connected generations of Cadillac luxury.

These 11 cars do not share a single formula. The early Duesenbergs and coach-built Lincolns represent the prestige and individualized craftsmanship of the classic era. Packard’s One-Twenty shows a luxury marque seeking a broader audience, while the postwar Cadillac examples foreground equipment and comfort. Lincoln’s later design shift, the Allanté roadster and the final Eldorado show how the category evolved beyond the traditional large flagship.
That range is why “top” is best understood as an editorial choice. The cars are notable for different reasons, and no consistent scoring system or comparable set of figures makes them objectively rankable against one another.
