In Obi’s San Francisco Bay Area fare samples, Waymo’s average price premium over Uber shrank from about 31% in April 2025 to about 13% in a later sample covering November 27, 2025, through January 1, 2026. But the latest located update, covering March 1–April 14, 2026, reports that Waymo’s average trip price rose faster than Uber’s; it does not publish the paired dollar averages needed to calculate a new gap. The figures describe one market and specific study periods—not what every rider will pay.
What the fare comparison actually found
Obi, a commercial ride-price aggregation company, reported these Bay Area averages for two comparison periods:
| Study period | Waymo average fare | Uber average fare | Waymo’s average premium over Uber |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 2025 | $20.43 | $15.58 | About 31%, as reported by Obi |
| November 27, 2025–January 1, 2026 | $19.69 | $17.47 | About 13%, calculated from the reported averages |
In the later sample, which covered more than 94,000 simulated ride requests in the Bay Area, Waymo’s average was still higher than Uber’s. The gap narrowed because Waymo’s reported average fell from the April figure while Uber’s rose. These are averages across observed offers, not a price promise for an individual trip. TechCrunch’s report on Obi’s comparison describes the later sample; Obi’s initial 2025 release gives the earlier averages.
Is the gap still narrowing?
The newest located update complicates the headline. Obi’s April 21, 2026 article says that in its March 1–April 14 San Francisco analysis, average Waymo trip prices rose 18% from the preceding study period, while Uber’s rose 5%. The article does not give the exact paired average fares, so those percentages alone cannot establish the new dollar gap or Waymo’s updated percentage premium. Obi’s April 2026 update also reports that Tesla Robotaxi daily average fares ranged from $8.31 to $14.59; that is a separate service and not a Waymo-versus-Uber average.

Average trip price, price per mile, and the premium between two providers are different measures. Obi says Uber and Lyft’s average price per mile fell slightly in the newer sample because their ride mix included a larger share of longer rides. A change in average trip price therefore does not, by itself, show that the cost of a comparable mile or route changed by the same amount.
Why the averages do not predict your fare
The comparisons are local snapshots. Obi’s latest analysis used organic searches in its app, compared matching pickup and destination pairs, and included UberX, Lyft Standard, Waymo, and Tesla Robotaxi. It processed trips over 500 meters and under 50 kilometers. Route mix, collection dates, and the types of rides available can all affect the result; the findings are not a national measure or a guarantee of a live quote. Obi’s description of its latest method explains the comparison.

Individual quotes also reflect timing and provider-specific pricing rules. Waymo says it shows the price before booking, bases it on the most direct route, and changes the price if a rider adds stops. It says prices may be higher at busy times, including nights and weekends. Waymo’s rider FAQ sets out those conditions.
For California rides other than Uber Pool, Uber says the displayed price is an estimate; the final fare is based on actual time and distance plus applicable taxes, fees, tolls, surcharges, and supply and demand. Uber notes that its pricing page may not apply in every country, region, or city and may change. Uber’s US pricing page describes that policy.

How to compare Waymo and Uber for one trip
- Enter the same pickup and destination in both apps, and select comparable ride types—such as Waymo’s available ride option and UberX.
- Check both quotes at roughly the same time, since demand and time of day can affect prices.
- Compare the quoted fare alongside pickup ETA. A lower fare may not be the better option if the wait or arrival time does not work for you.
- Account for how each service handles changes: adding a stop changes Waymo’s price, and an Uber California estimate may differ from the final fare.
A same-route, same-time check answers what the apps are offering for that trip. Obi’s study averages answer a different question: how observed offers compared across a defined set of requests and dates.

Obi CEO Ashwini Anburajan described the earlier positioning this way: “When Waymo entered the market, our research saw that a ride was priced 30 to 40 percent higher than an Uber or Lyft ride, but consumers were still taking them enthusiastically, viewing an autonomous rideshare as a premium product.” That is Anburajan’s account of Obi’s previous findings and consumer response, not an independent regulatory determination. The January 27, 2026 release containing the quote provides its context.

For a Bay Area rider, the evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “Waymo now costs about the same as Uber”: Waymo’s average premium was smaller in Obi’s late-2025/early-2026 comparison than in its April 2025 sample, but it had not disappeared. The newer March–April 2026 update says Waymo’s average rose faster than Uber’s versus the preceding period, while leaving the updated paired fare gap undisclosed. For an actual booking, the live quotes for your route, ride type, and departure time are the useful comparison.
