The Weirdest New Vehicles of 2021: Jeep’s Easter Jeep Safari Concepts and How to Judge Oddity

Jeep's 2021 Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles are the clearest documented example of unusual new design from that year, and this guide explains how to judge which oddities really count.

The clearest documented example of unusual new vehicle design from 2021 is a group of concept vehicles from Jeep Brand and Jeep Performance Parts, debuted for the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari. They were presented as concepts, not confirmed production models. This article covers that verified example, explains how to tell a genuinely new oddity from a historical curiosity, and sets out the questions to ask before calling any vehicle “weird” in a year-end list.

What the 2021 Jeep concepts were

In 2021, Jeep and Jeep Performance Parts introduced a set of “ultra-capable” concept vehicles for the Easter Jeep Safari, the off-road event Jeep uses to show modified vehicles each spring. The official Stellantis Media release, dated 2021, describes them as concepts and says they featured production and prototype Jeep Performance Parts. Read the release directly for the wording: Jeep Brand and Jeep Performance Parts Debut Ultra-capable Concept Vehicles for the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari.

This page does not reproduce a complete vehicle-by-vehicle list from that release, and it does not rank these concepts against other 2021 oddities. Treat it as one verified entry rather than a full answer to “what were the weirdest vehicles of 2021.”

Concept, prototype, or production: the first filter

Most year-end roundups blur three different things. A concept is a manufacturer’s design study, shown to gauge interest or to demonstrate capability. A prototype is a working test vehicle, often built to validate a part or a system. A production vehicle is one offered for retail sale. Only the last of these tells a buyer what they can actually order.

Revell 85-4501 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Model Car Kit 1:25 Scale 92-Piece Skill Level 4 Plastic Model Building Kit
  • Revell Plastic Model Car Kit #85-4501 is skill level 4 and contains 92 parts. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
  • 1:25 scale model measures L 6-3/4" x W 3-1/8" x H 3-1/4"
  • Stock production fenders, wheel and roll over bar. Rear Mounted spare tire and front bumper fog lights.
  • Off-road tires. Working spring suspension. Waterslide decal.
  • Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and soft black tires. Paint and glue not included.

The Jeep release frames its vehicles as concepts. That places them in the study category, which is why their unusual builds are best read as showcases of what Jeep Performance Parts can do rather than as models a dealer will sell you.

Parts shown are not the same as parts sold

The release states that the concepts used both production and prototype Jeep Performance Parts. Those are different categories. A production part is one Jeep Performance Parts can sell in its catalogue; a prototype part is still in development. The announcement does not establish that every part shown on the concepts was available to buy at the time, so do not assume that a modification you see in the release can be bolted onto your own vehicle.

Why the Peel P50 is not a 2021 entry

Three-wheeled microcars are a common source of confusion in oddball roundups, and the Peel P50 is the usual example. Peel Engineering’s current company history page describes the P50 as a three-wheeled microcar originally made in 1962. Peel Engineering’s “About” page is the reference for that history.

The P50’s age does not make it a new vehicle, and it should be excluded from any list of new 2021 models. It is useful context for how unusual vehicle design can be, but nothing in the available source ties it to 2021 production or launch.

A checklist for judging “weird” new vehicles

If you are building or evaluating a list like this, check each candidate against the same five points before you include it:

  • Status: concept, prototype, or retail production, as stated by the manufacturer.
  • Announcement date and event: the year and occasion the vehicle was first shown.
  • Market: the region or market the announcement covered, since a vehicle can be on sale in one country and absent from another.
  • What is distinctive: the specific design or capability that makes it unusual, rather than general novelty.
  • Parts status: whether any accessories shown were production items, prototypes, or confirmed retail products.

How the verified examples compare

Vehicle Status Announced What makes it unusual Parts status
Jeep ultra-capable concept vehicles (Easter Jeep Safari) Concept, per Jeep’s 2021 release 2021, Easter Jeep Safari Ultra-capable modified builds shown by Jeep and Jeep Performance Parts Production and prototype Jeep Performance Parts featured; retail availability not stated in the release
Peel P50 Historical microcar, not a 2021 vehicle Originally made in 1962 (Peel Engineering) Three-wheeled microcar design Not applicable to a 2021 launch

What to do with this information

If you want a 2021 list you can rely on, start with manufacturer press releases from that year, sort each entry by the five checks above, and drop anything whose date or status you cannot confirm. The Jeep concepts pass the date and source tests; the status is concept, and that is the status readers should carry forward.
