The largest engine that a primary manufacturer document ties to an American passenger car in this review is the 500 cu. in. (8.2 L) V8 in the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado. A Dodge Viper V10 may be larger by displacement, at 8.4 L, but no manufacturer document here confirms that figure, so it stays provisional. A ten-engine ranking would need one consistent inclusion rule and primary evidence for every entry, and the material checked supports neither. This article sets out the rules that decide the answer and the candidates that can be sized from the record.
Define “American production model” before ranking
Four choices change the answer more than any single spec sheet. Settle them before comparing engines.
- Vehicle class. Passenger cars and trucks are different lists. Some secondary rankings include public-road, non-commercial trucks, and a truck-inclusive answer could differ. None of the engines below is a confirmed truck application, so trucks are not ranked here.
- Origin. This article counts engines from U.S.-based brands: Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Chrysler and Dodge.
- Production status and volume. A low-volume performance car and a mass-market sedan are different cases. Volume is a separate axis from displacement.
- Retail availability. Confirm the engine was factory-installed and sold to retail buyers, not only built for a competition or prototype program.
How to compare engines on a fair basis
Use the same five checks for every candidate:
- Displacement as published by the manufacturer, in cubic inches and litres.
- Passenger car, truck or other road vehicle.
- Production status and volume.
- Model year or production span.
- Factory installation and retail availability.
Keep horsepower separate from displacement. Ratings from different eras, including gross and net figures, are not directly comparable, and a list ranked by power answers a different question from one ranked by size.
The verified candidates
The table lists every engine that a primary or manufacturer-linked source places in this review. Cells marked “not stated” mean the source reviewed does not give that value; they are not estimates.

1970 Cadillac Eldorado: 500 cu. in. V8
General Motors’ 1970 Cadillac vehicle information kit gives the Eldorado engine as 500 cu. in. (8.2 L), rated at 400 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. The kit calls it the largest passenger car engine in the industry at the time. That is a period statement about 1970, not a permanent record, and it does not measure the engine against later production. The ratings are manufacturer figures of their era and should not be set beside modern net horsepower numbers.
Dodge Viper: 8.4 L V10
At 8.4 L, the Viper’s V10 is about 513 cu. in., larger than the Eldorado’s 500 cu. in. So on displacement alone, the answer to “was the Cadillac 500 bigger than the Viper V10?” is no. Two cautions apply. The figure is not tied here to a manufacturer document, so check the Dodge specification for the model year you are researching before repeating it. And the Viper has ten cylinders. A “largest V8” claim leaves it out, while a “largest engine” claim includes it if the figure holds.

- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers. The open arrangement makes the major mechanical structures easy to identify before and during operation.
- PRECISION METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built from precision-cast and machined components in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Defined surfaces, exposed fasteners, timing assemblies, and front pulleys reflect key structures found in modern V8 engine architecture while giving the completed model a detailed industrial finish.
- 500+ COMPONENT ASSEMBLY: Build the model from more than 500 labeled components, including precision metal parts, screws, and assembly hardware. Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W30: 455 CID V8
General Motors Heritage identifies the W30’s engine as a 455 CID V8 rated at 370 hp. At about 7.5 L, it is larger than the 452 cu. in. Series 90 V16 but smaller than the Eldorado’s 500 cu. in. The page reviewed does not give torque.
1937 Cadillac Series 90: 452 cu. in. V16
General Motors’ 1937 Cadillac vehicle information kit lists the Series 90 V16 at 452 cu. in. (about 7.4 L). The kit gives displacement by model series, so the figure applies to the Series 90 engine, not to every Cadillac of that year. It is the only V16 in this set.

1960s Chrysler 300: 440 cu. in. V8
Chrysler’s brand history timeline says 1960s Chrysler 300 models included a 440-cubic-inch V8, about 7.2 L. The page gives no model years, ratings or full displacement table, so it establishes the engine size but not a precise ranking position.
Why this is not a ten-engine ranking
A top-ten list needs ten engines, each sized from a primary source, sorted by one stated rule. The material checked supports five candidates, and one of them, the Viper, lacks a manufacturer document. Secondary rankings reach different answers because they use different scopes: one is organized by horsepower and includes some non-commercial trucks, while another covers the largest engines across the last century. Neither is evidence of an exact displacement order for American production cars.

If you need a ranking today, the defensible version is narrower: the largest documented V8 in a passenger car is the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado’s 500 cu. in. engine, with the Viper’s V10 as the open question for any all-engine list.

Before buying parts for a 1970 Eldorado engine, confirm the model year, engine code and vehicle identification number. This article does not verify any specific parts listing or fitment, and a generic “Cadillac 500” label can cover engines that are not interchangeable.
