In 1985, five Royal Marines reportedly changed the engine in a Ford Escort in 42 seconds during a televised attempt on BBC Record Breakers. The feat is widely described as unmatched, but the available sources do not establish that Guinness currently recognizes it as an official world record. The careful description is the widely reported, unofficial 42-second engine change.
What happened during the 42-second attempt?
The Vehicle Association of Western Australia dates the attempt to November 21, 1985. Its account and MotorBiscuit’s 2024 retelling describe a timed demonstration that began and ended with the Escort driving under its own power.
- The Escort drove to the starting position, and its running condition was demonstrated.
- The driver switched off the ignition, starting the clock.
- The five Marines removed the engine and fitted its replacement.
- The crew got back into the car and drove toward a finish line 10 metres away.
- MotorBiscuit reports that the timer stopped when the rear wheels crossed the finish line.
MotorBiscuit gives the elapsed time as 42 seconds. That figure describes this particular timed performance under its reported rules, not a general benchmark for changing a car engine.
Why the time does not represent a normal engine replacement
The attempt was a rehearsed television stunt, not a complete, ordinary workshop replacement. MotorBiscuit notes that fluids do not appear to have been drained or replenished, the bonnet was removed unusually quickly, and some fasteners may not have been reinstalled to normal service standards. It also says the car struggled over the short distance to the finish. These are observations reported by that article, not findings from an independent inspection.

Rad Air’s 2014 retelling says the Marines practiced for two weeks. It also suggests the car may have had modifications, but does not establish that as a confirmed fact. The performance is best understood as a tightly prepared demonstration with a short drive requirement—not evidence that a roadworthy Escort can be fully serviced and returned to normal use in 42 seconds.
Is it an official world record?
The accounts describe the feat as a record attempt shown on BBC Record Breakers and say it remains unmatched. However, the available material does not verify a current Guinness record entry or provide original rules establishing official status. It is therefore more accurate to call it an unofficial or widely reported record than to say Guinness officially recognizes it today.

How does it compare with later engine-change attempts?
Other reported engine-change times involve different cars and requirements, so they are context rather than direct comparisons.
| Attempt | Reported details | Time | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Escort, Royal Marines, 1985 | Five Marines; the car had to drive 10 metres after the replacement engine was fitted. Vehicle Association of Western Australia dates the attempt to November 21, 1985; MotorBiscuit reports the time. | 42 seconds — MotorBiscuit, 2024 | Timed from switching off the running car until it crossed the finish line under power. |
| Volkswagen Beetle, Australia, 2005 | Four mechanics removed the air-cooled engine, moved it at least one metre away, reinstalled it, then drove the car five metres. | 1 minute 4 seconds — Vehicle Association of Western Australia, 2024 | A separate car and challenge format; not directly equivalent to the Escort attempt. |
| Volkswagen Beetle, Guinness claim | A Boston Globe search-result snippet recounts a Guinness engine-change record that was later surpassed; the underlying article was not reviewed. | 1 minute 37 seconds — The Boston Globe, 2026 | A separate reported Guinness claim; the snippet alone is not enough to establish a detailed comparison. |
A meaningful comparison would need to account for the car and engine layout, crew size, what had to be removed and refitted, whether the removed engine had to be moved away, whether the vehicle had to drive afterward, and exactly when timing began and ended. The reported times do not share enough established rules to rank these attempts as though they were one standardized competition.
