Ferrari adopted the symbol for its racing team after Enzo Ferrari met Baracca’s family; the best-documented milestones are its appearance on Scuderia Ferrari cars in 1932 and its later place on Ferrari road cars. Why Baracca originally chose the horse remains uncertain.
Whose horse was it originally?
The horse was associated with Francesco Baracca, an Italian aviator and First World War flying ace. The Italian Air Force says the black horse first appeared on an aircraft piloted by Baracca in early 1917 and later became associated with the plane of his 91st Squadron. Ferrari likewise identifies the emblem as originally Baracca’s. The Italian Air Force’s historical account and Ferrari’s retrospective establish the connection, though they do not settle why Baracca chose the motif.
How did the emblem reach Enzo Ferrari?
The accounts support a family connection, but they describe the handoff with different levels of detail. Ferrari says Baracca’s family suggested that Enzo Ferrari adopt the horse. The Italian Air Force gives a more specific chronology: Enrico Baracca and Enzo Ferrari met at the Savio Circuit on 16 June 1923, and Countess Paolina Baracca later donated the emblem to Ferrari.
The Air Force’s English-language account attributes this line to Countess Paolina: “Ferrari, put the prancing horse of my son on your cars.” That is the wording on its English page; it should not be treated as an independently verified original-language quotation.

When did the horse become a Ferrari racing symbol?
Ferrari dates the Prancing Horse’s debut on Scuderia Ferrari cars to 9 July 1932, at the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours. The original racing emblem was a black horse on a yellow field, with the Scuderia initials and the Italian tricolour. Ferrari describes the yellow as a tribute to Modena, Enzo Ferrari’s home city.
This was the team emblem, not yet the start of Ferrari’s modern road-car history. Ferrari dates the first drive of the 125 S to 12 March 1947, a milestone it describes as the beginning of modern Ferrari history at Maranello.
What does the Ferrari Prancing Horse mean?
Its clearest historical meaning is a link to Baracca and his aircraft, carried forward by Ferrari as a racing identity. The yellow field connects the Scuderia emblem to Modena, while the original design also included the team initials and Italian colours. The horse’s association with Ferrari is well documented; a definitive explanation of why Baracca first used it is not.

Stories that attribute Baracca’s choice to a particular heraldic or battlefield episode should therefore be treated as theories, not settled fact. The official accounts cited here establish the emblem’s use and transfer more firmly than its deeper origin.
