A Toyota GR Prius would be an intriguing blend of hybrid efficiency and performance-car character. But it is not a confirmed U.S. production model: Toyota’s announced 2027 Prius lineup lists LE, XLE, Nightshade, and Limited, with no GR grade. What exists today is a regular Prius with a SPORT drive mode—and a separate, historical Prius α GR SPORT prototype from Japan.
Is Toyota making a GR Prius?
Toyota’s U.S. announcement and model page for the 2027 Prius identify four production grades—LE, XLE, Nightshade, and Limited—but do not announce a GR Prius. Toyota’s public materials establish what the company has announced; they do not rule out every future plan or a model for another market.
The distinction matters because “GR Prius” is an appealing hypothetical, not a name Toyota has applied to a current U.S. production car. Toyota’s 2022 description of the fifth-generation Prius as having “Sporty exterior styling that appeals to the senses” refers to its styling, not evidence of a performance variant or independently measured sports-car behavior. Toyota’s 2022 Prius unveiling provides that styling context.
What the 2027 Prius actually offers
Toyota pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with its fifth-generation hybrid system. Its published output is 194 net-combined horsepower with front-wheel drive and 196 with all-wheel drive. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent acceleration or track-test results. Toyota lists a 55 MPG combined EPA estimate for the 2027 LE; that figure is specific to the LE and should not be applied to every grade or drivetrain.

These figures describe the regular Prius. Toyota’s 2027 announcement and 2027 Prius vehicle page do not specify a GR version’s powertrain, output, price, or release date.
SPORT mode is not a GR model
Toyota describes SPORT in the 2027 announcement as a mode that “Enhances dynamic performance and throttle response.” That is a drive-mode description, not a confirmation of a GR trim. The announcement does not establish that SPORT mode gives the Prius a GR-specific chassis, suspension, brakes, powertrain, or track capability.

The historical Prius α GR SPORT prototype
There is a real Toyota connection between the Prius name and GR SPORT: Toyota Motor Corporation referenced a Prius α GR SPORT prototype in historical Japanese-market GR-series material. The word “prototype” and the Japan-related context are essential. It is not evidence of a current U.S. production Prius GR, and it should not be confused with Toyota’s announced 2027 U.S. grades. Toyota’s historical GR-series material describes the prototype.
How a real GR Prius would differ from today’s Prius
A GR badge on a Prius would imply a distinct performance-oriented proposition, but Toyota has not published specifications or targets for such a car. Without official details, claims about horsepower, acceleration, handling, suspension tuning, track readiness, price, or launch timing would be speculation.

Toyota’s GR production sports cars are a separate point of comparison. The company’s GR models page highlights cars such as GR86 and GR Corolla. They occupy a sports-car role; the Prius remains a hybrid model whose published specifications emphasize its powertrain and efficiency. The available information does not support a direct performance comparison between a real GR Prius and those cars, because no production GR Prius has been specified.

Keep model year and qualification attached to fuel-economy claims. Toyota’s 2027 announcement gives a 55 MPG combined EPA estimate for the LE. For the prior model year, Toyota’s 2025 announcement lists manufacturer estimates of up to 57 MPG combined for the 2026 Prius with FWD and 54 MPG combined with AWD. Those 2026 figures are not substitutes for the 2027 LE-specific EPA estimate. Toyota’s 2026 Prius information identifies the earlier model-year figures.
