There was no single electric SUV that was best for every 2024 buyer. Kelley Blue Book’s list offers a useful starting shortlist, but its displayed ties are editorial rankings, not a definitive order. Your strongest match depends on how many people you carry, how much cargo space you need, your charging access, your driving pattern and your budget.
How to use this 2024 electric SUV shortlist
The ten models below are the first ten vehicles in Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 list, presented as a guide rather than a universal winner sequence. KBB says its reviewers consider purpose, interior and exterior, powertrain, ride and handling, features, comfort, price, parking, lane changes, cargo, acceleration, braking, cabin quiet, materials and reliability. Those factors matter differently to a two-person commuter than to a household that regularly uses three rows.
Edmunds named the Kia EV9 its 2024 Top Rated Electric SUV, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia Niro EV as finalists. That award reflects Edmunds’ evaluation; it does not mean the EV9 is the right choice for every household. The Niro EV was a finalist but is not among the ten vehicles in this KBB-derived shortlist.
The 10 electric SUVs to consider
Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 page lists the following maximum range estimates. They are headline figures, not a matched-configuration comparison: range varies by trim and drivetrain, and the page includes different figures in some descriptive blurbs. Verify the EPA rating for the exact vehicle you are considering.

| Model | KBB 2024 page maximum range estimate | Who should put it on the shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 | 303 miles | Buyers drawn to a well-rounded electric SUV on KBB’s shortlist; compare its exact trim, range and equipment with the Kia EV6. |
| Kia EV9 | 304 miles | Families who need three rows and want to weigh passenger and cargo utility against a larger, more expensive three-row alternative. |
| Chevrolet Blazer EV | 279 miles | Shoppers who want to compare a midsize electric SUV with the rest of the shortlist; check the chosen configuration’s range and equipment. |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 280 miles | Buyers considering an electric SUV with a sport-oriented name and styling; compare the actual trim and drivetrain rather than relying on the page maximum. |
| Kia EV6 | 310 miles | Shoppers cross-shopping the Ioniq 5 who want to compare two related shortlist options on configuration, cabin, price and charging needs. |
| Chevrolet Equinox EV | 319 miles | Budget-conscious shoppers comparing electric SUVs; assess the specific trim’s price and range alongside available equipment. |
| Honda Prologue | 296 miles | Buyers who want a Honda-badged electric SUV and can match their needs to the model’s distinct EPA range ratings by trim and drivetrain. |
| Hyundai Kona Electric | 261 miles | Drivers whose usual trips and charging routine fit a lower maximum listed range; check the exact rating against their regular route. |
| Nissan Ariya | 304 miles | Shoppers who value a premium-feeling cabin, as described by MotorTrend, and are willing to compare its charging trade-offs with alternatives. |
| Volkswagen ID.4 | 291 miles | Buyers interested in an electric SUV whose 2024 changes included improvements to power, range, seats, audio and controls, according to MotorTrend. |
These recommendations are starting points, not claims that every trim has the listed range or that one model leads in every category. KBB’s headline values should not be used to rank vehicles as if they were measured in the same configuration or conditions.
Choose by the job the SUV needs to do
If you need three rows
Start with the Kia EV9. Edmunds describes adult room in all three rows, and its comparison with the Rivian R1S gives the EV9 seating for six or seven. It is the only three-row choice in this ten-model list with detailed passenger and cargo figures in the available comparison; confirm that the specific seating configuration works for your family.
If range is the deciding factor
Do not choose from a model’s maximum headline number alone. Compare EPA range for the exact trim and drivetrain you can buy, then account for your route, weather, speed, passenger load and charging stops. For one concrete example of why trim matters, Honda lists the 2024 Prologue at 296 miles for EX and Touring FWD, 281 miles for EX and Touring AWD, and 273 miles for Elite AWD.

If you regularly carry bulky cargo
Check cargo capacity with the seats in the positions you will actually use. A maximum cargo figure with rear seats folded does not tell you how much room remains when all seats are occupied. The EV9 and R1S comparison below illustrates the distinction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you rely on public fast charging
Look beyond an advertised peak charging rate. Charging time depends on the vehicle configuration, battery state of charge, temperature and charger performance; access and station reliability also affect a trip. If most charging will happen at home, confirm that your parking and electrical setup support the charging equipment you plan to use.
Range figures: EPA ratings and test results are different
An EPA range rating is an estimate for a particular vehicle configuration, not a promise of the distance every driver will travel. Independent road tests answer a different question: how a particular vehicle performed under that test’s conditions. Keep those measures separate when comparing cars.

Honda Prologue and Toyota bZ4X
Honda’s January 2024 release lists EPA range of 273–296 miles across 2024 Prologue trims, depending on drivetrain and trim. In an Edmunds comparison distributed by AP News, the Toyota bZ4X range was listed as 222 miles for AWD Limited and 252 miles for FWD XLE. In Edmunds’ test, its AWD Prologue Elite traveled 320 miles—more than its EPA estimate. The bZ4X also exceeded its estimate in that test, but its observed distance was lower than the Prologue’s. Those are results for the tested vehicles, not a guarantee for other trims or drivers.
Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S
Edmunds’ comparison gives the 2024 EV9 a range spread of 230–304 miles by configuration and the R1S a spread of 270–400 miles. Its tested EV9 traveled 306 miles against a 270-mile estimate. That result shows why a test outcome should be labeled separately rather than substituted for an EPA rating.

In Edmunds’ charging comparison, the tested EV9 added 100 miles in an average 11 minutes at a high-powered charger; the tested R1S took 19 minutes. These are test results, not a prediction for every charging session or station. The comparison presents a clear use-case split: the R1S offers higher maximum range and towing capacity, while the EV9 had more cargo space behind its third row and charged faster in the cited test. Edmunds also described the EV9 as less expensive in that comparison; the figures here do not establish current transaction prices.

Range is only part of the operating picture. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary, based on U.S. DOE/EPA FuelEconomy.gov data accessed October 2, 2024, reports efficiency from 0.97 to 2.94 miles per kilowatt-hour for model-year 2024 standard SUVs with two-wheel drive. That is a class-level range, not a ranking of the ten models in this guide. It illustrates why two SUVs with similar battery range can require different amounts of electricity to travel a given distance.
Before choosing a vehicle, map out where it will charge most often. For home charging, confirm the connector and vehicle charging limits, available electrical-panel capacity, parking arrangement and installation requirements with a qualified professional. Honda’s 2024 Prologue charging-package materials included a Level 2 home station, an installation credit, a portable Level 1/Level 2 kit option and charging credits; package terms are specific to that offering and do not establish the compatibility or current price of another charging station.

How to compare prices without mistaking MSRP for today’s cost
A 2024 model-year MSRP is historical context, not a current offer. Honda’s Prologue pricing release was issued in January 2024; its listed prices excluded taxes, registration, destination where specified, accessories and later dealer adjustments. The information here does not establish current new-vehicle inventory, dealer transaction prices, used-market values or incentive eligibility. Check current local listings and confirm fees and incentives directly before making a budget.
Compare the out-the-door cost of the exact trim you want, not just a model’s starting price. Include the equipment you need, home-charging setup if applicable, and the value of any incentive only after confirming that you and the vehicle qualify under current rules.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist before you test-drive
- Set the passenger and cargo requirement. Decide how often you need every seat, then check cargo capacity with those seats in use.
- Match range to your real trips. Look up the EPA rating for the exact trim and drivetrain; identify your longest regular route and likely charging stops.
- Check charging where you park and travel. Confirm home-install feasibility or map usable public charging on routes you make often.
- Compare the exact configurations. Review price, range, equipment and available driver-assistance features for vehicles with comparable drivetrains and trims.
- Drive your finalists. Assess ride comfort, visibility, controls, cabin materials, acceleration and braking yourself; those priorities cannot be settled by a range number.
- Verify the deal and ownership details. Get a current written price, confirm fees and incentive eligibility, and review warranty and charging-package terms for the specific vehicle.
