Its best-documented modern turning point came with the third generation, introduced in 2021: twin-turbo V6 powertrains, an available hybrid, and a U.S.-designed truck assembled exclusively in Texas.
When did the Toyota Tundra first come out?
Toyota says Tundra production began in May 1999 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana. The company described it as the first full-size pickup built in North America by a Japanese automaker. That is Toyota’s characterization of the milestone, rather than an independently established distinction. Toyota’s account of 20 years of Tundra production recounts the launch and the truck’s manufacturing history.
What are the Toyota Tundra generations?
The clearest historical marker in Toyota’s available archive identifies 2000–2006 as the first generation. Toyota’s later account identifies the third generation as introduced in 2021. The evidence here does not establish the second generation’s exact year span or a complete set of engineering milestones, so this is a selective history of documented transitions rather than a full model-year chronology.
| Period | What is established |
|---|---|
| May 1999 | Production began at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, according to Toyota. |
| 2000–2006 | Toyota’s archive labels these model years as the first generation. |
| 2008 | Toyota says production moved to its San Antonio plant. |
| Second generation | Exact year span and engineering milestones are not stated in the cited sources. |
| 2021 | Toyota says the third generation was introduced. |
What defined the first-generation Tundra?
Toyota’s archive for the 2000–2006 first generation shows a range of cab and body examples, including Access Cab, Double Cab, and StepSide versions, as well as examples with a 4.7-liter V8. These archive entries establish that those configurations appeared in the first-generation range, but they do not support assigning a particular engine output or availability to every model year.

Where is the Toyota Tundra made?
Manufacturing shifted from Indiana to Texas during the Tundra’s early history. Toyota says production moved to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio in 2008. The company’s 2024 model-year overview says the current generation is designed in the United States and assembled exclusively in San Antonio. These statements describe the production locations Toyota reported; they do not establish the origin of every component in the truck.

What changed in the third-generation Tundra?
Toyota says it introduced the third generation in 2021, replacing the earlier V8 direction with twin-turbo V6 powertrains and offering a hybrid option. The hybrid is Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX powertrain. This marked a change in the Tundra’s powertrain approach, while the truck remained built in San Antonio. Toyota’s 2024 model-year overview describes the third-generation truck and its powertrain direction.
Is the Toyota Tundra hybrid?
Yes. Toyota offers an i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain in the third-generation Tundra. For the 2025 model year, Toyota announced that this available powertrain was rated at 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. Those are Toyota’s figures for the applicable i-FORCE MAX configuration, not ratings for every Tundra grade or powertrain.

What did Toyota announce for the 2025 Tundra?
Toyota announced seven 2025 grades: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro, and Capstone. The company also announced a new TRD Rally Package. Its stated maximum towing capacity was 12,000 pounds; towing capability varies with configuration and equipment, so that maximum should not be read as a rating for every version. Toyota’s announcement details the model-year scope and applicable figures in its 2025 Tundra release.

Toyota’s newsroom listing includes 2026 Tundra and Tundra i-FORCE MAX pages dated July 22, 2025.
