Which BMW did the FBI reportedly acquire?
Reporting in December 2025 said the FBI had acquired armored BMW vehicles for Director Kash Patel. A February 2026 report identified the model as the BMW X5 Protection VR6. In The Independent’s December 2025 account, FBI deputy assistant for public affairs Ben Williamson said the bureau needed to update its fleet with four vehicles, which he described as common for security agencies. He said Patel chose a vehicle that was “about $250k CHEAPER” than the traditional SUVs the FBI bought. Did the FBI stop buying Suburbans?
No. A procurement listing reports that the FBI issued a June 2026 sole-source justification for GM Defense Chevrolet Suburban Shield armored SUVs, with an award date of June 12, 2026. That shows Suburban Shield vehicles remained in the bureau’s procurement picture after the BMW reports. GovTribe describes the contract as a five-year, $10 million-ceiling indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) agreement, with a minimum guaranteed quantity of one and a maximum of 20 vehicles. The ceiling and maximum are contract limits, not proof of actual spending or deliveries; the protection description is the aggregator’s account of the procurement requirements. How strong is the claimed BMW cost saving?
The roughly $250,000-per-vehicle saving is an FBI spokesperson’s claim reported by The Independent. The Daily Beast reported that Williamson did not provide the outlet with documents demonstrating the BMWs’ cost or the claimed savings.
