A Toyota Previa return is being reported as a possibility, but Toyota has not confirmed a North American launch. A recent report suggests a more streamlined minivan with possible plug-in hybrid or battery-electric power; those are predictions, not Toyota specifications. The idea is compelling because the original Previa stood out for its rounded shape and unusually space-conscious engineering.
What the current report says—and what remains unknown
Autoblog reported on October 6, 2026, citing Japanese automotive reports, that Toyota could revive the Previa name. It describes a possible global seven-seat minivan and mentions plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric powertrains, along with Toyota’s TNGA-K architecture. The article also points to the 2017 Fine-Comfort Ride concept as a possible design reference. None of those details has been confirmed by Toyota, and the report says a North American launch is far from certain. Read Autoblog’s report.

Why the original Previa looked and worked differently
The first-generation Previa, sold in the UK from 1990 to 2000, was an oval-shaped MPV designed by Tokuo Fukuichi. Its defining engineering choice was a mid-mounted engine beneath the cabin floor: Toyota’s archive says the 2.4-litre engine sat at a 75-degree angle, helping create a flat cabin floor and a low centre of gravity. The model could seat up to eight. Toyota GB’s first-generation archive and Toyota UK’s Previa history document those features.

That distinctive packaging helps explain why a possible revival attracts attention: the Previa was not simply a conventional minivan with a different badge. But there is no evidence that a new model would repeat its underfloor mid-engine layout. A modern vehicle’s resemblance to the old one could be primarily visual or practical rather than mechanical.
How the second generation changed the formula
The second-generation Previa debuted at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show and launched in the UK on July 5 that year. Toyota moved the engine to the front and used front-wheel drive, while retaining flexible family seating. Buyers could choose seven- or eight-seat configurations; in the seven-seat version, seats could slide, fold, tumble, or be removed. Toyota records the Previa’s departure from the European lineup in 2005. That is a European-market date, not a statement about when the name ended in every market. Toyota UK’s history covers the generation change and European timeline.

Toyota GB’s 2000 release lists the UK-market 2.4-litre VVT-i petrol engine at 156 PS at 5,600 rpm and 225 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It gives the vehicle’s overall length as 4,750 mm and wheelbase as 2,900 mm. These figures describe that historical UK model only; they say nothing about a possible successor. Toyota GB’s period release provides the specifications.
What a revived Previa might look like beside the Sienna
Autoblog’s report imagines a streamlined, design-led minivan that could sit alongside the Sienna, rather than describing a confirmed Toyota product plan. It also raises possible electrified options. If that direction materialized, the broad contrast could be between the Sienna’s established family-minivan role and a Previa positioned around a different design or plug-in and electric choices. That remains market-positioning speculation: Toyota has not confirmed the Previa, its intended role, or any differences in seating, dimensions, price, range, or availability. Autoblog’s report is the source for that proposed framing.

What would have to be confirmed
A real return would require Toyota to confirm that it is developing a new Previa, then disclose its design, engineering, powertrains, and markets. Until then, the original’s packaging and the report’s possible electrified direction are useful context—not a preview of a production vehicle. In particular, North American availability remains unconfirmed.
