The car behind the “Japanese V12” story is the second-generation Toyota Century, chassis GZG50, sold from 1997 to 2017. Its 1GZ-FE was the first V12 Toyota identifies as being built for a Japanese passenger car. Toyota designed the Century around quietness, passenger comfort and quality control, but those design aims and factory procedures are not proof that every surviving car is reliable today.
Which Japanese V12 car is the title about?
It is the second-generation Toyota Century, launched in Japan on April 18, 1997. Toyota’s historical archive calls the 1GZ-FE the first V12 for a Japanese passenger car. The “only” framing is best kept to this documented distinction; it should not be taken as a claim about every prototype or one-off vehicle.
The Century name spans three generations, but the V12 belongs to the GZG50 era. Toyota’s 2019 history feature dates the first generation to 1967–1997, the second to 1997–2017, and the third to a launch in June 2018. The first-generation Century used a V8; the third-generation model uses a V8 hybrid. Today’s Century is a different model and does not carry the GZG50’s V12.
What made the GZG50 a luxury flagship?
Rear-seat comfort came first
Toyota described the redesign as prioritizing passenger relaxation and ride comfort. The car’s chauffeur-focused character was reflected in details such as rear vanity mirrors and concealed coat hooks, alongside an electronically controlled air suspension designed to adjust damping continuously. These are period-specific descriptions of the second-generation car, not a guarantee that every grade or market had identical equipment.

Suspension, size and safety
Toyota specified double-wishbone suspension at all four wheels, paired with electronically controlled Skyhook air suspension. The redesign lengthened the wheelbase by 165 mm and the body by 150 mm over the preceding model. Toyota also described a GOA impact-absorbing body and six SRS airbags.
For representative Japanese-market GZG50 grades, Toyota’s archive lists dimensions of 5,270 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,475 mm tall, with a 3,025 mm wheelbase. Curb weight was approximately 1,990–2,000 kg depending on grade. These are historical specifications, not universal figures for every variant or market. How the V12 was engineered
The 1GZ-FE is a 4,996 cc DOHC, 48-valve V12 with Toyota’s VVT-i variable valve timing. Toyota lists output at 280 PS at 5,200 rpm for representative Japanese-market grades. The 1997 launch material also specifies a 10.5:1 compression ratio, iridium spark plugs and a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Drivers could select normal, power or snow throttle modes.
Toyota described the engine as having independently managed intake, throttle, sensors and EFI computers for each bank of six cylinders. In Toyota’s account, this arrangement allowed the engine to operate on one bank in an emergency. That is a manufacturer description of the design; it should not be read as a promise of continued safe operation or as evidence about failure rates in cars now decades old.

Toyota characterized the engine’s delivery as exceptionally smooth and quiet. Those are the manufacturer’s positioning claims, not the result of an independent comparison with other luxury sedans.
What Toyota documented about quality and durability
Toyota’s 1997 launch announcement said: “Steps to assure the ultimate in quality and reliability have been taken throughout the entire manufacturing process.” It cited balanced propeller shafts and adjusted joint angles, and said each completed car received a 60-minute, 50-km final drive test. Toyota’s 2019 craftsmanship feature adds that an individual vehicle history book recording inspection details was kept for each Century beginning with the second generation.

Those records show a deliberate quality-control process, not measured long-term reliability. The cited Toyota materials do not establish failure rates, survival rates, owner experiences or superiority over competing cars. A used GZG50’s condition still depends on its individual maintenance history, parts access and inspection by someone familiar with the model. Toyota’s special seven-coat black finish described in its craftsmanship feature applies to the new Century featured there; it should not be assumed for every GZG50.

Toyota’s 1997 announcement reported 7.2 km/L in Japan’s 10.15 test mode, approximately 13% better than the preceding model by that test. This is a historical laboratory-cycle figure, not a prediction of real-world consumption.

Toyota also records a distinct CNG version made available in January 2003, rated at 258 PS and equipped with a 200-liter tank, with an approximately 350 km range. Those figures describe the CNG variant, not the ordinary gasoline GZG50; Toyota’s archive is the source for both sets of historical specifications.
What to check before buying or maintaining one
The factory story cannot substitute for inspecting a particular car. For an ownership decision, prioritize evidence tied to the vehicle itself:
- Review service records and the car’s history, including any original inspection book that remains with it.
- Have a specialist familiar with Japanese imports and the 1GZ-FE assess mechanical condition, electronics and suspension.
- Confirm parts availability and fitment by VIN, model code and part number rather than assuming a generic listing applies.
- Check that manuals and parts catalogs cover the exact model code, market and transmission configuration.
A specialist retailer lists an English workshop manual covering 1997–2017 TA-GZG50/DBA-GZG50 cars with the 1GZ-FE, including engine, cooling, lubrication, EFI, electrical, brake, transmission, steering and suspension sections. Retail listings can change, so verify exact coverage and the car’s configuration before buying. A third-party GZG50 parts catalog listing describes original-equipment part numbers, exploded illustrations and fitment data; confirm fitment using the vehicle details rather than relying on a broad model name. JPNZ’s manual listing and the GZG50 parts catalog listing are third-party resources, not Toyota documentation.
Why the GZG50 still stands out
The Century combined a rare passenger-car V12 with a chauffeur-oriented cabin, four-wheel double-wishbone suspension and a documented, inspection-intensive manufacturing approach. That makes it a distinctive Japanese luxury flagship. The evidence supports Toyota’s engineering and quality-control intent; it does not establish that every example has proved durable over decades of service.
