The Camry’s story begins in Japan in 1980 as the rear-wheel-drive Celica Camry—not as the front-wheel-drive sedan most people associate with the name. Its modern direction is clearest in the U.S.: Toyota made the 2025 Camry hybrid-only, while regional versions and specifications differ.
When did the Toyota Camry first come out?
Toyota’s account distinguishes two beginnings. The original vehicle debuted in Japan in 1980 as the rear-wheel-drive Celica Camry. In 1982, Toyota renamed the model Camry and redesigned it as a front-wheel-drive sedan for global markets, according to the company’s July 10, 2017 announcement.
Toyota’s official generation gallery calls the 1980 Celica Camry the first generation and the 1982 Camry the second. That means the answer depends on what “Camry” means: the model’s lineage starts in 1980; the Camry nameplate on the redesigned sedan starts in 1982.
How did the Camry’s timeline unfold?
Toyota’s global gallery gives a concise sequence of major entries. The dates are a broad chronology, not proof that every market received each generation at the same time or with identical specifications.

The gallery establishes a sequence of successive redesigns, but it is not a complete technical history of every generation. Model launch timing, body styles and equipment can vary by country.
How did the Camry become a global best-seller?
The model’s growth was not simultaneous everywhere. Toyota says the original Celica Camry was initially sold exclusively in Japan; the front-wheel-drive 1982 sedan was designed for global markets. Toyota USA dates the Camry’s arrival in the United States to 1983, a year after the Camry name was adopted.

Toyota’s sales milestones show the scale the model reached, but they are dated company-reported totals rather than live counts or independent market measurements.

What changed in the modern Camry?
The clearest recent shift is electrification. Toyota announced in November 2023 that the U.S. 2025 Camry would be offered exclusively as a hybrid electric vehicle, pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Toyota’s fifth-generation Hybrid System. Toyota gave net combined outputs of 225 hp for front-wheel drive and 232 hp for all-wheel drive in its U.S. announcement.
Those figures describe the U.S. 2025 model, not every Camry sold worldwide. Toyota Europe’s October 2024 description of the regional Camry Hybrid 230 lists 230 DIN hp and combined fuel consumption of 4.8 l/100 km under the WLTP procedure. Those European figures use a different regional specification and consumption test from U.S. estimates; they are not directly interchangeable.

What does the Camry look like today?
Toyota USA identifies a 2026 Camry and publishes a live, configuration-dependent specification page. Exact equipment, prices and availability depend on configuration and market, so buyers should check Toyota’s current regional site rather than assume one country’s details apply elsewhere. Toyota’s available historical figures do not establish a current 2026 sales ranking across vehicle categories, nor do they provide reliability or long-term ownership-cost statistics.
