Hellcat, Hellcrate, Hellcrate Redeye and Hellephant are related names, but they do not describe the same engine. Hellcat is Dodge’s familiar name for its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI performance engine; Hellcrate and Hellcrate Redeye are Mopar crate-engine offerings based on 6.2-liter configurations; Hellephant is a distinct, supercharged 426-cubic-inch crate HEMI. The published outputs vary by version—and, for the standard Hellcrate, by official source—so compare the exact engine and specification rather than relying on the name alone.
Hellcat, Hellcrate and Hellephant: what each name means
These names sit in the same supercharged HEMI performance family, but they refer to different things. Hellcat is the best-known Dodge/SRT performance-engine name. Hellcrate and Hellcrate Redeye identify Mopar crate engines intended for swaps. Hellephant identifies a larger-displacement crate engine, not another name for a 6.2-liter Hellcat.
- Hellcat: Dodge/SRT’s familiar supercharged 6.2L HEMI performance-engine name.
- Hellcrate: Mopar’s supercharged 6.2L HEMI crate-engine offering.
- Hellcrate Redeye: a higher-output 6.2L Mopar crate-engine version.
- Hellephant: a supercharged 426-cubic-inch crate HEMI. In a 2022 Stellantis announcement, the A30 designation was used for the engine formerly known as the Hellephant 426 supercharged HEMI.
A crate engine is sold as an engine assembly for installation in a vehicle, rather than as an engine already fitted to a production car. A crate-engine listing does not, by itself, establish everything a swap needs; the supporting kit and vehicle systems matter.
How the published engine figures compare
The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent dynamometer results. The standard Hellcrate has two different official output listings: Mopar’s current product page gives one set, while DodgeGarage’s 2021 Direct Connection announcement gives another. The source and version should stay attached to the number.

| Engine/version | Displacement | Published horsepower | Published torque | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hellcrate 6.2L supercharged crate HEMI | 6.2L | 707 hp | 650 lb-ft | Mopar current engine accessories page, accessed 2026 |
| Hellcrate 6.2L | 6.2L | 717 hp | 656 lb-ft | DodgeGarage Direct Connection announcement, 2021; differs from Mopar’s current product-page listing |
| Hellcrate Redeye 6.2L | 6.2L | 807 hp | 717 lb-ft | Mopar current engine accessories page, accessed 2026; also listed by DodgeGarage in 2021 |
| Hellephant 426 supercharged crate HEMI | 426 cu in | 1,000 hp | 950 lb-ft | Mopar current engine accessories page, accessed 2026 |
For the standard Hellcrate, the 2021 announcement’s 717 hp and 656 lb-ft should not be silently substituted for Mopar’s current page figures of 707 hp and 650 lb-ft. The published Redeye figures agree across those sources. In all cases, these are the manufacturers’ stated outputs, not a promise of what a completed vehicle will produce at the wheels.
Why Hellephant is not just a higher-output Hellcat
The key distinction is displacement and engine configuration. The Hellcrate and Hellcrate Redeye are 6.2L crate HEMIs; Hellephant is a 426-cubic-inch supercharged crate HEMI. Mopar’s 2022 Direct Connection catalog specifies an aluminum block, forged-steel crankshaft and forged 4340 H-beam connecting rods for the Hellephant. Stellantis described the A30 variant in 2022 as a bored-and-stroked aluminum Gen III HEMI producing 1,000 hp on premium fuel.

Mopar introduced Hellephant at SEMA in 2018 as a 1,000-hp 426 crate engine. Its name blends the legacy 426 HEMI “elephant” nickname with the modern Hellcrate name. The 1968 Dodge Super Charger concept was the showcase vehicle for the engine and installation kit.
What a Hellephant or Hellcrate swap involves
Mopar describes a separate plug-and-play engine kit for installing Hellephant in nearly any pre-1976 vehicle. That is broad manufacturer guidance, not confirmation that the engine fits every chassis or that the kit alone completes every swap. Vehicle-specific installation may involve the transmission, mounts, cooling, fuel delivery, wiring and controls, exhaust, and other systems.

Before buying, verify the exact engine and kit part numbers, what the kit includes, compatibility with the target vehicle and transmission, and any additional parts or fabrication required. Have a qualified installer assess the build if fitment or integration is uncertain. A general “nearly any pre-1976 vehicle” description is not a vehicle-specific fitment guarantee.
Fuel and street legality
Stellantis’s 2022 A30 announcement specifies premium fuel for its 1,000-hp Hellephant variant. Do not assume that one fuel statement establishes requirements for every engine version; check the current instructions for the exact engine and calibration.

A 2022 Mopar Direct Connection catalog stated that its listed crate engines were not legal for pollution-controlled vehicles or vehicles registered for highway use. That dated catalog language is not a universal, current ruling for every jurisdiction or configuration. Before planning a street build, check local emissions, registration and inspection requirements and the current manufacturer terms for the exact engine and vehicle.
