There was no single agreed-upon “top luxury car” of 2023. Car and Driver named leaders in three sedan-size categories, the World Car Awards chose a global luxury-car winner, and Cars.com selected its own Best Luxury Car. Those are separate judgments—not a shared overall ranking.

Car and Driver’s ratings and category results are from its 2023 luxury-sedan rankings. The displayed prices there—$44,795 for the BMW 3-Series, $82,450 for the Mercedes-AMG E53 and $115,650 for the S-Class—are dated page values, not current offers; equipment, configuration and market can affect prices.
Why did the Lucid Air win a global award?
The World Car Awards named the Lucid Air its 2023 World Luxury Car on April 5, 2023. The award process began with 16 vehicles and narrowed to three finalists: the BMW 7 Series/i7, Genesis G90 and Lucid Air. The jury comprised 100 automotive journalists from 32 countries, and KPMG tabulated the secret-ballot results. This is a global award result, not a Car and Driver ranking or a claim that the Air suits every luxury-car buyer. Details are in the official 2023 World Car Awards results.
What did Car and Driver evaluate?
Car and Driver says its sedan rankings combine instrumented testing with editors’ real-world impressions and roughly 200 data points. Its criteria include acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment. The list is organized by sedan size, so the BMW 3-Series, E53 and S-Class lead different segments rather than competing for one overall title.

The rankings sit within Car and Driver’s broader 2023 Editors’ Choice program: its February 22 announcement said editors selected 125 vehicles from more than 400 models on sale in the U.S. that year. The publication describes its selections as a combination of objective testing and subjective driving impressions in its Editors’ Choice explanation.
What made the Genesis G90 a 2023 pick?
Cars.com named the Genesis G90 Best Luxury Car of 2023. Its award page was not available for direct review, so the award attribution is based on Cars.com’s search-result excerpt. That excerpt also describes a base powertrain with a 375-horsepower twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive; verify those specifications against the exact model-year, trim and market before using them to compare cars.

The G90 also appeared among Car and Driver’s full-size leaders, alongside the BMW 7-Series, but Car and Driver ranked the Mercedes-Benz S-Class first in that category. The results differ because they are distinct editorial assessments.
How should you compare these cars?
Start with the kind of car you need, then compare like with like. A compact sedan, midsize executive car, full-size flagship and luxury EV answer different priorities. The awards do not provide a common cross-publication score, so adding or averaging their ratings would create a comparison the sources did not make.
