There is not enough comparable, verified evidence here to name a defensible top 10 or a single 2024 winner. This guide is limited to the U.S. market: the Department of Energy’s model-year 2024 inventory identifies plug-in hybrid SUV candidates, but it does not list towing capacities. The available manufacturer and owner-manual sources establish only a few relevant figures, and some need confirmation for the exact 2024 trim. Because towing limits vary by configuration and trailer-brake setup, treating an unverified number as a model-wide rating could mislead buyers.
Why a reliable 2024 top 10 is not established
A ranked list needs a comparable U.S. towing figure for each exact model-year 2024 configuration—ideally maximum braked trailer weight, with required towing equipment identified. The Department of Energy’s model-year vehicle inventory identifies eligible plug-in hybrid SUVs and provides electrification and efficiency details, but it does not publish tow ratings. The manufacturer and manual sources available for this comparison do not provide equivalent, confirmed ratings for ten models.
That gap matters: a vehicle’s family-wide maximum may not apply to every trim, and ratings can depend on market, hitch or towing package, and whether the trailer has brakes. A list that mixes those conditions would create a ranking without a sound basis.
2024 plug-in hybrid SUV candidates in the U.S. inventory
The DOE inventory includes these SUV candidates: BMW XM, Dodge Hornet PHEV, Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid, Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, Lexus NX 450h+, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Their presence in the inventory confirms they are candidates to investigate; it does not establish their towing capacities or rank them.

The inventory also includes the Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid in its broader model-year list. Its U.S. market availability and exact 2024 model-year details should be verified before including it in a U.S. comparison. The DOE list is a useful eligibility reference, not a towing table.
What the available towing figures establish
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid: 7,716 lb is not a confirmed 2024 rating
A Porsche Marin dealer listing gives a maximum braked towing capacity of 7,716 lb for a Cayenne E-Hybrid, but does not clearly identify the model year or trim. It is therefore a lead to check against the 2024 owner’s manual or an official specification—not a verified rating for every 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid. Porsche’s September 25, 2023 announcement confirms that the 2024 Cayenne S E-Hybrid is a plug-in SUV variant and reports 512 hp of system output and a 25.9-kWh battery. Those powertrain figures do not verify towing capacity.

Volvo XC90 Recharge: 5,000 lb on a current support page
Volvo Cars USA’s XC90 Recharge support page, updated March 30, 2026, lists a maximum braked gross trailer weight of 5,000 lb, a maximum towball load of 500 lb, and a maximum unbraked trailer weight of 1,650 lb. The page’s current figure should not automatically be treated as applicable to every 2024 configuration. The 2024 manual lists 6,330 lb gross vehicle weight and 1,160 lb load capacity for U.S. models; these are vehicle-loading figures, not trailer ratings. Confirm the exact vehicle’s manual and limits before towing.
Kia PHEV guidance: limits vary by brake system and market
Kia’s 2024 owner-manual guidance for the PHEV powertrain lists 750 kg unbraked, 1,500 kg braked with a Type A brake system, and 1,350 kg braked with a Type B system. The page’s model and market applicability must be confirmed before applying those numbers to a U.S. 2024 Sportage PHEV or using them in a U.S. ranking. Kia also advises consulting an authorized dealer about towing-kit requirements.

How to compare a tow rating safely
Maximum trailer weight is only one part of the vehicle-and-trailer combination. Check the exact vehicle’s limits and the trailer’s equipment before relying on a published maximum.

- Use the matching market and model year. Consult the owner’s manual or official specification for the specific 2024 vehicle, not a rating for a later model year or another country.
- Compare braked with braked. Keep unbraked limits separate; they are not interchangeable with braked trailer ratings.
- Verify the configuration. Check trim, drivetrain, towing package, hitch requirements, and any brake-system conditions attached to the figure.
- Check every loading limit. Trailer weight, towball or tongue load, payload, gross vehicle weight, axle limits, and gross train weight are distinct constraints. Staying under the advertised trailer maximum does not waive the vehicle’s other limits.
- Follow the vehicle-specific towing instructions. Kia’s manual, for example, says not to tow during the first 2,000 km (1,200 miles), advises staying below 100 km/h (60 mph) while towing, and says to consider sway control. Confirm that the manual applies to the exact vehicle and market.
What to verify before choosing a 2024 PHEV SUV for towing
- Identify the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and market for the SUV.
- Find its matching owner’s manual or official towing specification and confirm the maximum braked trailer weight.
- Check whether the rating requires a towing package, particular hitch, or specified trailer-brake setup.
- Compare the trailer’s loaded weight and tongue or towball load with the SUV’s trailer, payload, vehicle-weight, and axle limits.
- Confirm the required equipment and operating restrictions with the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized dealer.
