No. The Tesla Roadster is not the first car to use powered fans to create downforce. Joseph Katz’s Race Car Aerodynamics: Designing for Speed identifies the Chaparral 2J as the first fan car, appearing in 1969—more than half a century before Tesla’s announced road car.
Tesla is reviving the same broad pressure-extraction idea in a modern package. Its Roadster page describes a multi-mode fan and ground-sealing system that pulls air from beneath the vehicle, including a claim that it can hold the car upside down while stationary. That capability remains a manufacturer statement rather than an independently verified test in the available evidence.

What was the first fan-downforce car?
The Chaparral 2J was the first documented fan car in this history. Katz writes that it appeared in 1969 and used two auxiliary fans to create suction under the car. Flexible Lexan skirts helped seal the gap between the body and the track, allowing the fans to maintain lower pressure beneath the vehicle.
That arrangement differs fundamentally from a conventional wing. A wing produces downforce by moving through air, so its effect generally increases with vehicle speed. The Chaparral’s fans could generate a pressure difference independently of forward speed, provided the skirts remained close enough to the surface and the fans could move sufficient air.

RACER has reported a historical Chaparral testing figure of roughly 2,220 pounds of downforce. That is an attributed period test report, not a standardized modern measurement and not a directly comparable Tesla specification.
How the Chaparral 2J generated suction
- Two auxiliary fans extracted air from the low-pressure area under the car.
- Flexible Lexan skirts limited leakage around the body-to-ground gap.
- Because the fans supplied the airflow, downforce did not depend solely on the car’s speed.
The system was an all-or-nothing engineering challenge: a damaged skirt, a larger ride height, or an uneven surface could let air leak in and reduce the pressure difference.

How the Brabham BT46B brought the idea to Formula 1
The next major milestone was the Brabham BT46B, which appeared at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix. Formula 1’s official history records that its large rear fan was presented as a device for cooling the car while also generating downforce. Technically, the fan extracted air from a skirt-sealed underbody, creating the same basic low-pressure effect pioneered by Chaparral.
Niki Lauda won the Swedish race in the BT46B. Rival teams protested the concept, and Brabham owner Bernie Ecclestone voluntarily withdrew the car after that event. The BT46B therefore demonstrated the performance potential in a top-level championship but did not become a continuing Formula 1 solution.

Why the Formula 1 car was withdrawn
The dispute centered on the fan’s aerodynamic effect and the way its cooling rationale fit the period’s regulations. The car’s ability to extract air from beneath the floor gave it a powerful downforce advantage, while the stated cooling function was part of its regulatory strategy. Following protests, the car was removed rather than developed into a regular-season fixture.
What Tesla says about the new Roadster
Tesla describes the Roadster’s system as a “multi-mode fan and ground sealing system” that “acts as a downforce generator, pulling air out from beneath the vehicle.” The company also states: “This provides enough suction to hold the vehicle upside down, even when stationary.”

Why fan downforce works when a wing cannot
A conventional aerodynamic wing needs relative airflow. At a standstill, it produces no useful aerodynamic load because air is not flowing over it. A fan system instead creates a pressure differential by removing air from beneath the vehicle. If the underbody is sealed well enough, atmospheric pressure above the car pushes it toward the ground.

Actual force depends on several variables:
- Seal quality: Skirts, flexible edges or other ground seals must limit leakage.
- Ride height: A larger gap lets air enter and reduces the pressure difference.
- Fan capacity: Motor power, airflow and the ability to maintain pressure determine the available load.
- Surface conditions: Bumps, debris and changes in pavement can interrupt the seal.
- Control strategy: A multi-mode system must manage suction as speed, ride height and driving conditions change.
That is why attaching an ordinary household fan to a car would not reproduce these systems. The historical cars integrated high-flow fans with a carefully shaped, sealed underbody; the fan alone is not the complete mechanism.
Can the Tesla Roadster really drive upside down?
Tesla’s wording describes enough suction to hold the car upside down, even while stationary. In practical terms, that would require the sealed system to generate a downward force at least equal to the vehicle’s weight, while the tires, suspension, structure and power system remain capable of supporting the resulting loads.
The available material does not include an independent demonstration, a test protocol, a duration, a surface specification or a published force figure for that claim. It is therefore best understood as an announced capability, not a verified instruction to attempt an upside-down test. A real-world result would depend on the Roadster’s final production hardware, the selected performance trim, the surface seal and the operating conditions.
What this history means for the Roadster
The Roadster’s novelty is not the invention of fan downforce. Its distinction is applying a race-bred pressure-extraction concept to a modern sports car and describing multiple operating modes rather than a single racing setup. Chaparral established the concept in 1969; Brabham showed its Formula 1 potential in 1978; Tesla is proposing a road-car interpretation decades later.
Whether the production Roadster matches the company’s most dramatic claims will depend on independently measured downforce, sealing behavior and regulatory approval. Until those data are published, the historical answer is clear while the performance verdict remains open: Tesla is adapting an old idea, not creating the first fan car.
