The strongest examples here are the Range Rover Classic and Ford Bronco in the 1970s, the Jeep Cherokee XJ in the 1980s, and the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 1990s. The available evidence does not establish a definitive model for the 2000s, 2010s, or 2020s. Those limits matter: “SUV” has covered different vehicle designs and uses over time, and traditional off-roaders and car-based crossovers are not interchangeable categories.
“Defined” is an editorial judgment, not an official award or a universal sales ranking. The useful question is what a vehicle came to represent: a change in design, intended use, market adoption, or the way buyers understood utility. The examples below are strongest for the United States and for the particular histories cited; they should not be read as a global leaderboard.
| Decade | Most useful example from the available evidence | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1970s | Range Rover Classic; Ford Bronco as a U.S. counterpoint | Comfort joined to off-road ability; recreational American utility |
| 1980s | Jeep Cherokee XJ | Compact, family-oriented SUV packaging |
| 1990s | Ford Explorer; Jeep Grand Cherokee | Mainstream U.S. adoption; a premium-capability proposition |
| 2000s | No single model established | The evidence here is not specific enough to choose a vehicle |
| 2010s | Toyota RAV4 as a strong example, not a proven winner | The long evolution of the compact crossover |
| 2020s to date | No single model established | No supported cross-market leader in the available evidence |
1970s: Range Rover comfort meets Bronco recreation
Range Rover Classic: a different idea of off-road luxury
The Range Rover Classic is a compelling 1970s choice because it represented a synthesis: an off-road vehicle conceived with comfort in mind. An industry history describes the 1970 Range Rover as the start of a slow-burn revolution in the luxury/off-road concept. That makes it a useful marker of changing expectations, not proof that it was the decade’s universal best seller or most influential SUV in every country.
Ford Bronco: the American recreational-utility story
For a U.S.-focused counterpoint, the Bronco represents recreational off-roading and personalization. Ford’s history says its redesigned Bronco was delayed after the 1973–74 oil embargo and economic downturn. Ford also reports that the redesign sold more than 180,000 units in its first two years; the published account does not specify the statistic’s year, so that figure is best treated as Ford’s historical claim rather than a dated market comparison.

Ford’s history reproduces Don Frey’s description of the Bronco’s options and accessories: “like its older brother, the Mustang, it will be offered with a wide range of options and accessories that will permit it to be the many things to many people.” Together, the Bronco and Range Rover tell different regional and product stories rather than competing for one uncontested title.
1980s: Jeep Cherokee XJ makes compact utility a defining theme
Jeep’s decade history dates the Cherokee XJ’s debut to 1984 and highlights its compact four-door packaging and unibody construction. It is a strong example of the shift toward a smaller, more road-usable family utility vehicle, distinct from the traditional image of a large, truck-like off-roader.

Jeep describes the XJ as the first compact four-door SUV and credits it with other technical firsts. Those are the manufacturer’s claims; they should be attributed to Jeep rather than treated as independently settled industry consensus. The significance for this decade is clear even without turning those claims into a universal award: the XJ made compact four-door utility central to Jeep’s SUV story.
1990s: Explorer broadens adoption; Grand Cherokee adds a premium angle
Ford Explorer: mainstream U.S. family adoption
Ford links the Explorer’s 1990/1991 introduction to the rapid growth of SUV popularity in the United States. In a 2013 release, Ford reported nearly seven million Explorers sold in the country since launch. That cumulative, U.S.-specific figure supports the Explorer’s place in the mainstreaming story; it is not a decade-only total or a global ranking.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: capability with a more premium proposition
The Grand Cherokee adds a different dimension to the decade: Jeep presents it as combining capability with a more premium position, and says it was immediately popular. Jeep’s history reports 629,000 Grand Cherokees sold during the 1990s. The page’s publication year is not specified in the available account, and the decade total should not be compared as though it were measured on the same basis as Ford’s cumulative Explorer figure.

The available material points broadly to the spread of car-based trucks and growth in SUV use, but it does not compare particular 2000s contenders well enough to choose a model responsibly. Naming a winner would require decade-specific evidence about candidates, adoption, and the markets being compared. Rather than turn a broad shift into an unsupported vehicle pick, this decade remains open.

2010s: RAV4 is a strong crossover example, not a settled winner
The RAV4’s history helps explain why it belongs in a discussion of modern SUVs. Toyota traces the RAV-FOUR concept to the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, says production sales began in May 1994, and notes that the fifth-generation RAV4 launched in Europe in 2019. Toyota reported 10 million cumulative global RAV4 sales in 2020. That is a lifetime milestone, not a 2010s sales total. It demonstrates the model’s longevity and scale, but does not establish that the RAV4 alone defined the decade: the evidence here does not compare it with other candidates.
2020s to date: no cross-market leader is established
The available sources do not support naming one SUV as the defining vehicle of the 2020s. The RAV4 history reaches a 2020 milestone, but that is not a current decade ranking. A defensible choice would need current comparisons across markets and vehicle types; without them, a single winner would overstate what is established.
How to read “SUV” across these decades
SUV is a shifting market label rather than a perfectly stable engineering category. The vehicles in this history span different combinations of off-road purpose, family use, comfort, and car-based design. A meaningful comparison therefore asks what each model represented in its own market and era—not just which badge sold the most. It also keeps unlike figures separate: a two-year launch-period tally, a single-decade total, and cumulative lifetime sales answer different questions.
