For U.S. model-year 2024 electric SUVs, the lowest listed base price in this comparison belongs to the Hyundai Kona Electric, while the Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD stands out for its 319-mile EPA-estimated range. The best fit depends on whether you prioritize entry price, range, or a particular trim and charging setup. These are historical catalog and manufacturer figures—not current 2026 prices or a claim about today’s availability.

Here, “budget” means a lower listed base MSRP among the battery-electric SUVs compared below. MSRP is only a starting point: trim, drivetrain, destination charge, dealer pricing, incentives, and stock can change the price you actually pay.

2024 affordable electric SUV comparison

The Department of Energy (DOE) Alternative Fuels Data Center catalog provides a consistent model-year 2024 comparison for the Kona, ID.4, Niro Electric, and Model Y. Its listed prices and EPA range figures describe model-year configurations, not current advertised deals. The catalog row retrieved for the Equinox EV does not provide a base MSRP, so its price context comes from dated General Motors releases instead.

Model 2024 base MSRP EPA-estimated range Configuration note Why consider it
Hyundai Kona Electric $33,550 (DOE catalog) 200–261 mi SE is listed at 200 mi; SEL and Limited at 261 mi. Lowest listed entry price in this shortlist; range differs substantially by trim.
Volkswagen ID.4 (RWD listings) $38,995 (DOE catalog) 206–291 mi Range varies across rear-drive configurations; the entry version is not the longest-range version. A middle-price option with multiple range and trim choices.
Kia Niro Electric $39,900 (DOE catalog) 253 mi The cited catalog lists one range figure. A mid-price choice with a listed range between the shorter and longer versions of some rivals.
Tesla Model Y $43,990–$44,990 (DOE catalog) 260–320 mi Price and range vary by configuration. Offers a higher-range configuration, but starts above the lowest-priced options here.
Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD DOE catalog base MSRP: not stated. GM’s dated releases give different price context; see below. 319 mi FWD range; GM’s $34,995 base LT price was tied to later ordering availability in 2024. A strong official-range candidate if the relevant trim and dated price were available to the buyer.

DOE catalog figures are model-year 2024 values; the catalog data cited here was downloaded May 5, 2026. Range is EPA-estimated, not a guarantee of what a particular driver will achieve.

Which affordable electric SUV is best for your priority?

Lowest listed entry price: Hyundai Kona Electric

The DOE catalog lists the 2024 Kona Electric at $33,550 and gives a 200–261-mile range span. That span matters: the SE is the 200-mile version, while SEL and Limited are listed at 261 miles. Choosing the cheapest trim therefore means accepting less EPA-estimated range than the higher trims.

Hyundai’s model-year 2024 page separately displayed a $32,675 estimated net price. That is Hyundai’s displayed estimate, not a universal transaction price or a substitute for the DOE catalog’s $33,550 base MSRP. Hyundai also says MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license charges. See Hyundai’s 2024 Kona Electric specifications and pricing context.

Longest listed range: Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD

GM’s dated material gives the Equinox EV FWD an EPA-certified range of 319 miles, the longest listed figure in this comparison. Price needs more context than a single starting number: an October 2023 update to GM’s release gave a $34,995 starting price and the 319-mile FWD range, while GM’s May 14, 2024 release said the then-current starting MSRP was $43,295 and that the $34,995 base LT would be available to order later that year. Those statements reflect different dates and availability, not a guaranteed price for every buyer or a current offer.

Just one glance gives you complete charging insight. GM’s Equinox EV release, including its October 2023 pricing and range update and GM’s May 14, 2024 release provide the dated context. GM CEO Mary Barra described the company’s intent in that May release: “With the flexibility of GM’s Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose.” That is GM’s own statement, not an independent assessment of value.

Middle-ground alternatives: Volkswagen ID.4 and Kia Niro Electric

The DOE catalog lists the rear-drive 2024 ID.4 at a $38,995 base MSRP with a 206–291-mile range spread across configurations. Check the exact version: the entry configuration’s range is not the same as the top of that span. The 2024 Kia Niro Electric is listed at $39,900 and 253 miles, giving shoppers a single catalog range figure for comparison.

Higher-priced choice with a broad range span: Tesla Model Y

The DOE catalog lists 2024 Model Y variants at $43,990–$44,990 and 260–320 miles. The range and price depend on configuration, so a headline figure for one version should not be assumed to apply to another.

How to compare range and charging needs

EPA estimates provide a standardized way to compare vehicles, but they are not a promise of real-world range. Hyundai notes that actual range varies with conditions, vehicle configuration, battery condition, driving habits, and temperature. Compare the estimate for the exact trim you are considering, then think about the drives you need to cover and where you can charge.

Charging access is a separate ownership question from rated range. Consider whether you can charge where the vehicle is parked and whether charging is practical along your regular routes and longer trips. The figures here do not establish a particular compatible home charger or guarantee access to public charging; check the exact vehicle’s specifications and the charging options available to you.

What the 2024 prices do—and do not—tell you

All prices in this guide are historical model-year 2024 figures. A base MSRP is not an out-the-door price: destination charges, dealer pricing, selected trim and drivetrain, taxes, and any applicable incentives affect the final amount. The Equinox timeline in particular shows why a dated “starting price” should be read with its availability context. The cited information does not establish current 2026 inventory, transaction prices, or used-market prices.

Before using any historical figure to plan a purchase, check the exact vehicle’s window sticker, current dealer listing, and local availability. Do not assume that a trim or price announced for later ordering was immediately available everywhere.

Federal clean vehicle credit: verify the exact vehicle and purchase date

Federal credit eligibility is not automatic for every buyer or every trim. IRS guidance says the relevant vehicle price test uses MSRP, not the final negotiated price. For SUV classification, the cited IRS guidance follows the vehicle fuel-economy label or the EPA size class displayed on FuelEconomy.gov; its stated qualifying-SUV MSRP limit is $80,000.

The IRS model table for its stated coverage lists a $7,500 credit amount for selected 2024 Equinox EV LT/RS models, selected 2024 Model Y versions, and 2024 ID.4 trims. That is a dated, configuration-specific listing—not a promise that every trim qualifies or that a particular buyer can claim the credit. Rules and eligibility can change. Check the IRS information applicable to your purchase date and the exact vehicle before counting any credit toward your budget. Review the IRS clean vehicle credit guidance.

2024 buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and EPA range for the vehicle being offered.
  • Compare the window-sticker MSRP with the historical catalog figure; account for destination and other charges separately.
  • Check current stock and obtain the dealer’s actual price rather than relying on an old starting MSRP.
  • Verify federal, state, and local incentives for your purchase date, location, vehicle configuration, and eligibility.
  • Assess whether home charging is available to you and how charging fits your regular routes and longer trips.
