Bonnie and Clyde’s so-called “death car” was a Ford sedan—the car they occupied when officers ambushed them near Sailes, Louisiana, on May 23, 1934. The FBI’s caption calls it a bullet-ridden Ford sedan; PBS’s documentary transcript identifies it as a Ford V-8. The car’s later display history is less settled: reporting placed it at a Primm, Nevada, attraction in 2024, but that does not confirm where it is or whether it is open to visitors now.
What happened to Bonnie and Clyde in the car?
Before dawn on May 23, 1934, officers from Louisiana and Texas hid beside a highway near Sailes in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. According to the FBI, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow arrived in an automobile and tried to drive away; officers opened fire, and the pair were killed instantly. PBS’s American Experience transcript places the ambush on Highway 154 and describes the Ford V-8 slowing near Ivy Methvin, whose staged roadside breakdown helped draw the couple to a stop. The FBI’s case history and the PBS transcript give accounts of the event.
PBS’s narrator says more than 150 bullets struck the car. That is the documentary’s reported figure, not a separately established count. The FBI’s historical image caption also identifies the vehicle as a bullet-ridden Ford sedan.
What kind of car was it?
The careful description is a Ford sedan, or a Ford V-8 when referring to PBS’s account. The sources cited here do not establish a precise body style, trim level, or model designation with primary vehicle documentation, so more specific labels should not be treated as settled fact.

The automobile is part of the story because it carried the couple during the fatal ambush, but also because cars were central to the Barrow gang’s mobility and crimes. The FBI says its investigation began with evidence connected to stolen Ford automobiles and traces the couple’s travel through a series of stolen cars. Their movement by car was part of a violent crime spree, not merely a tale of outlaw road travel.
Where did the car go after the ambush?
Louisiana’s official tourism site says the car was towed to the former Conger’s Furniture Store and Funeral Parlor in Arcadia, where Bonnie and Clyde were embalmed. This immediate post-ambush stop is distinct from the nearby interpretive markers and the museum in Gibsland. Louisiana’s tourism page describes the places and their historical connections.

The car later appeared in public exhibitions. A 1993 Nevada State Library and Archives periodical described it on display at Whiskey Pete’s and noted a copy of a letter attributed to Clyde Barrow to Ford founder Henry Ford. Later reporting by the Las Vegas Review-Journal described moves among Primm venues and placed the car at Buffalo Bill’s in 2024. Those accounts document earlier displays, not its location or visitor access in October 2026. Confirm directly with a venue before planning a visit.
Is the car on display the original?
The FBI’s image caption identifies the bullet-ridden Ford associated with the ambush, and the car has been exhibited as the “death car.” But a venue name, photograph, or attraction description alone does not establish that a particular display is the original; replicas and film props also exist. The cited material does not provide a primary authentication record that resolves every later exhibition claim. Treat assertions about a specific present-day display as unconfirmed unless the venue clearly identifies the vehicle and explains its provenance.

What can you visit in Louisiana?
Louisiana’s tourism site describes two separate visitor stops tied to the story:
- Highway 154 ambush markers: Roadside interpretive markers are on LA Highway 154, about eight miles south of Gibsland.
- Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum: The Gibsland museum is in a former café where the couple stopped before the ambush.
The tourism description does not say the original car is housed at the museum. These sites offer different experiences: the markers interpret the roadside location, while the museum presents exhibits in Gibsland. The source does not establish current opening hours, so check with each site before traveling.

How to read the stories told about the car
Accounts of the car mix official historical summaries, documentary narration, and later visitor reporting. Keeping those source types distinct helps avoid turning a recollection or an old display listing into a present-day fact.
