It debuted in 1964, passed out of public view after its promotional life, and was later restored by a private owner. The last detailed reporting located here, published in 2021, said the owner kept it private and asked that his identity and location remain undisclosed.
What was Ford’s Big Red?
Big Red was an experimental tractor-trailer, not a production truck. Automotive historian Robert Tate reports that Ford’s Scientific Research Laboratory and styling team developed it in the early 1960s, with Roy Lunn leading the project. The concept put gas-turbine technology—closely associated with the jet age—into a heavy highway vehicle to demonstrate a possible future for long-distance transport.
Tate’s 2020 account describes the truck as 96 feet long and dates its launch to August 28, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair, around the time of the Mustang’s introduction. He reports an output of 600 horsepower. These are published historical figures, not specifications independently measured for this article. MotorCities National Heritage Area
How did its turbine power change?
Accounts distinguish the engine in the original prototype from the engine installed during its later restoration. The Drive identifies the original as a Ford 705 gas turbine rated at 600 horsepower. Its 2021 reporting says the restored truck received a 707 version 3 replacement turbine rated at 525 horsepower. Those ratings describe different engines; the original engine’s output should not be assigned to the restored truck. The Drive’s discovery report and its restoration account
#1 Best Overall
Big Red’s technology made it a striking demonstration, but the available reporting does not provide a quantified comparison of turbine and conventional truck operating costs or performance. The Drive summarized the technology as not adding up, but that is not enough to treat any single technical or economic factor as the proven reason Ford did not put the truck into production.
What happened after Big Red’s debut?
After its 1964 launch, Big Red went on a promotional tour, according to The Drive. Its later ownership history is less completely documented. FreightWaves reports that Holman Moody acquired the truck around 1970 and stored it in a hangar at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport until 1978, after which it was sold to an anonymous buyer. That is a secondary account, not a fully established chain of custody. FreightWaves’ account

The Drive’s 2021 reporting says a private owner obtained the vehicle in the early 1980s, researched it, and spent two years restoring it. The owner’s name and location were withheld at his request. The report described the restored truck in a purpose-built garage.
Where is Big Red now?
Big Red was not simply a lost truck returned to public display: the 2021 rediscovery story described a privately held, restored vehicle, not a museum exhibit or publicly viewable attraction. The owner asked The Drive to keep his identity and location private. Reporting available here does not establish whether the truck’s location, condition, ownership, or access arrangements have changed since that article.

That distinction matters: “found” refers to the discovery of the surviving truck and its restoration, not to a public unveiling. There is no verified current address or public visiting information to provide.
Why did Big Red nearly disappear?
Big Red’s public life was tied to promotion and demonstration, rather than to an ongoing production program or permanent public collection. Once it left that role, its whereabouts became difficult for the public to follow. The later private restoration preserved the vehicle, but the owner’s decision to keep it out of public view meant that preservation did not make it accessible to visitors.

- Brand new box. Real rubber tires. True-to-scale detail. Detailed interior, exterior. Officially licensed product. Has opening hood, front doors and tailgate. Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Made of diecast metal with some plastic parts. Dimensions approximately L-9, W-3.5, H-3 inches.
Its story therefore has two endings of a kind: the experimental truck survived, but its public trail largely stopped. The 2021 reporting brought its existence and restoration back into view without revealing where it was kept.

No currently verifiable Big Red-specific book, model kit, collectible, replacement part, or restoration item is established by the available reporting. Because the truck was a one-off experimental vehicle, generic truck accessories should not be assumed to fit it.
