There is no verified, evidence-backed roster of ten gas SUVs that can fairly be called track monsters. The factory specifications available support a useful shortlist of four distinct starting points: a current Ford Explorer V6, three 2027 gasoline Porsche Cayenne variants, a current Jeep Grand Cherokee turbo, and the historical Grand Cherokee SRT. They do not establish that any of these is ready for repeated track use—or justify inventing six more picks.
Use this as a starting-point guide, not a ranking or conversion recipe. “Sleeper” is subjective: an ordinary-looking SUV may surprise more than a conspicuous performance trim, while a high power figure alone says little about track capability.

What makes a gas SUV a credible track-build starting point?
A factory engine specification is only one part of the case. Before treating an SUV as a track project, compare its exact trim and model year across powertrain, curb weight and power-to-weight ratio, driven wheels, differential and torque management, brake hardware, cooling, suspension, tire fitment, parts support, and operating costs. Then decide whether its appearance fits your definition of a sleeper.
The available manufacturer and government sources establish some power, speed, fuel-economy, and engine details for the examples below. They do not establish a consistent ten-SUV comparison, vehicle mass and power-to-weight figures across those examples, track durability, lap times, or documented aftermarket fitment. The candidates are therefore not presented as a ranked top ten.

Four verified starting points—and one model family with three variants
2025 Ford Explorer with the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6
Ford’s 2025 technical specification lists a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 10-speed automatic among the Explorer’s available configurations. That does not mean every 2025 Explorer has this engine; check the exact trim and configuration in Ford’s 2025 Explorer technical specifications before relying on a power rating or other figure. The Explorer could appeal to a builder who wants a familiar-looking SUV, but the cited spec sheet alone does not establish track readiness or upgrade support.
2027 Porsche Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne GTS
Porsche USA’s model page lists these factory figures for its 2027 gasoline Cayenne variants. The horsepower, acceleration, and top-track-speed figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results. Porsche describes top track speed with summer tires.

Figures and starting prices are as listed on Porsche USA’s Cayenne model page, accessed in 2026; prices can change and exclude various charges. The GTS is the most conspicuous performance-oriented choice of the three, so it may be less of a sleeper than a base Cayenne. None of these published figures demonstrates how the vehicle handles repeated track sessions or what modifications it needs.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 2.0-liter Hurricane turbo
Jeep’s 2026 capability page identifies an available gas-powered 2.0-liter Hurricane turbo engine rated at 324 hp and 332 lb-ft, and lists Selec-Terrain modes that include Sport. Those are factory details, not evidence of track validation. Confirm the engine and equipment on the specific vehicle; the page does not establish compatibility of performance parts or readiness for repeated circuit use. Historical Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
The Grand Cherokee SRT offers a separate, historical performance-SUV angle. Stellantis’ historical specification describes a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 rated at 461 bhp at 6,250 rpm, with variable front/rear torque distribution; it gives a 35/65 split in Sport and Track modes. These are historical factory specifications, not specifications for the current Grand Cherokee. The source is Stellantis’ historical Grand Cherokee SRT material. A used SRT may interest a builder seeking an older factory performance SUV, but its age, condition, brake package, and exact fitment need to be evaluated on the individual vehicle.
What fuel economy figures can—and cannot—tell you
Fuel economy is one ownership factor, not a measure of track efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 guide lists 21 mpg combined for the 2025 Ford Explorer AWD with the 3.0-liter V6, and 17 mpg combined for the 2025 Dodge Durango RWD with the 5.7-liter V8. These are configuration-specific combined ratings, not estimates of fuel use on track. Check the exact configuration in the 2025 Fuel Economy Guide.

- Pin down the exact vehicle. Record model year, trim, engine, driven wheels, factory options, and brake package. Do not carry specifications from one trim or generation to another.
- Check the fundamentals together. Verify curb weight, power-to-weight ratio, brake hardware, cooling provisions, suspension layout, differential behavior, and tire sizes for that exact configuration. The figures above do not fill all those fields, so consult the applicable vehicle documentation rather than infer them from horsepower.
- Confirm real parts and fitment. Look for documented components that fit the precise year, trim, axle, and brake package. No specific track pad, tire, or part number is established here; a category-level suggestion is not a fitment recommendation.
- Inspect before track use. Have the vehicle and its service history assessed, then address brake condition, fluid and cooling needs, tire condition and load/speed suitability, and component fitment with a qualified shop or event technical staff. This is a safety-critical preparation checklist, not a guarantee of suitability.
- Budget for use, not just purchase. Compare fuel, tires, brake consumables, maintenance complexity, and parts availability alongside purchase price. Published road fuel-economy ratings do not predict track consumption.
- Define “sleeper” for yourself. Decide whether you want an understated appearance, an unexpected powertrain, or simply a less obvious performance vehicle. A conspicuous SRT or Cayenne GTS can be compelling without being visually subtle.
Why this is not a ten-SUV ranking
A defensible ten-model list would require consistent, exact-year evidence for gas-engine availability, curb weight, power-to-weight ratio, drivetrain, brakes, cooling, tire fitment, and documented modification support. The sources cited here do not provide that coverage or comparative track results. Naming six additional SUVs as proven candidates would turn an editorial wish list into an unsupported recommendation, so this shortlist stays with the examples whose relevant factory details are established.
