Built for North America, it paired the compact 13B rotary with styling Mazda said was shaped for American pickup tastes. Mazda calls it the world’s first rotary-engine pickup and utility vehicle; the company also describes it as the only rotary-powered pickup.
Why Mazda built a rotary pickup for North America
The REPU was an export-market answer to a specific opportunity. Mazda said pickup trucks were popular in North America, and that the rotary’s compact size, light weight and durability made it suitable for a pickup. The company did not sell the truck in Japan.
Its appearance was meant to fit the market as well. Mazda’s archival description points to a large grille, boxy body, large mirrors, flared fenders and wide tires as features reflecting American pickup tastes. The combination made the REPU more than a rotary engine fitted into an existing idea of a truck: Mazda adapted the vehicle’s look and destination around the market it wanted to reach.
Mazda’s description calls the REPU the world’s first rotary-engine pickup and utility vehicle. Mazda USA has also called it the world’s only rotary-powered pickup. Those are Mazda’s characterizations, rather than independently surveyed industry claims. Mazda’s archival account of the Rotary Pickup

Launch and model span: why the dates differ
Mazda dates the REPU’s North American launch to April 1974. A separate Mazda press album gives the Rotary Pickup’s span as 1973–1977. The launch date describes when Mazda says it introduced the truck in North America; the broader span is the press album’s model chronology, so the two dates describe different things. The album notes that the model was available only in North America and does not provide a major-specifications table. The official material cited here identifies a 1.3-liter 13B rotary, but does not establish figures for output, torque, fuel economy, payload, transmission or total production.

How the rotary engine worked
Unlike a piston engine, which moves pistons back and forth in cylinders, a rotary engine uses a triangular rotor turning inside a shaped housing. Combustion pressure rotates the rotor and its eccentric output shaft directly. Mazda’s engineering overview describes rotary engines generally as compact and light, with low vibration and noise, and notes their potential for high output. These are Mazda’s technical descriptions of the engine type, not comparative test results for the REPU. Mazda’s technical overview of rotary engines
The pickup belonged to a much larger rotary project at Mazda. The company dates its technical cooperation with NSU and Felix Wankel to July 1961, and its first rotary-powered vehicle, the Cosmo Sport, to 1967. The REPU carried that technology into a commercial vehicle and a new export-market niche. Mazda’s 2023 rotary-history chronology

The oil crisis and the limits of Mazda’s rotary strategy
The REPU appeared as Mazda’s broader rotary strategy faced a worsening economic challenge. Mazda’s corporate history identifies the first oil crisis in fall 1973 as a turning point: rotary engines offered performance and low pollution, but lagged in fuel efficiency. Sales fell, especially in the United States, and inventory rose. Mazda USA’s history also says the 1977 oil embargo and fuel concerns limited the viability of rotary vehicles in the U.S. Mazda’s corporate history and Mazda USA’s rotary-engine history
That context helps explain why a rotary pickup was a difficult proposition as fuel economy became more pressing, but the cited sources do not identify a specific internal decision or date for ending REPU production. It is reasonable to see the truck’s market pressures against the larger headwind for rotary vehicles, but a direct cause-and-effect account of its discontinuation is not documented in those histories.

For Mazda, the rotary remained a symbol of technological ambition. In a 2023 company release, Mazda Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Takeshi Mukai called it “a special part of Mazda history and represents our ‘never-stop challenging spirit.’” That spirit helps explain the REPU’s place in Mazda history: it was an unusual attempt to take a distinctive engine beyond sports cars and put it to work in a pickup.
