The Nissan 300ZX is not one fixed specification: the name covers two distinct generations, the Z31 and Z32. The key change was from the Z31’s turbocharged VG30ET V6 to the Z32’s broader lineup of naturally aspirated and twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6s, paired with advanced chassis technology and two body styles. Exact specifications depend on model year and market.
What makes the 300ZX story distinctive?
The “secret” behind the 300ZX is its evolution across two generations rather than a single hidden feature. Nissan’s history of its Z cars describes the Z31 as replacing the earlier inline-six with a turbocharged VG30ET V6. Nissan calls it “Japan’s first mass-produced V-6 engine with turbocharger”; that is the manufacturer’s characterization of its historical significance, not an independently verified industry comparison. Nissan USA: “Nissan Z: 50 years of excitement”.
The fourth-generation Z32, launched in July 1989, developed that formula into a more sophisticated package. It offered naturally aspirated and twin-turbo V6 versions, two-seat and 2+2 body configurations, and chassis systems including four-wheel multi-link suspension, Super HICAS, and four-piston aluminum calipers. How do the Z31 and Z32 differ?
| Feature | Z31 | Z32 |
|---|---|---|
| Place in the Z-car line | Replaced the preceding Z car, which used an inline-six, according to Nissan’s history. | Fourth-generation Z car; Nissan says it launched in July 1989. |
| Engine story | Nissan identifies the turbocharged VG30ET V6 as the Z31’s defining transition from the earlier inline-six. | Available with naturally aspirated and twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 variants identified by Nissan as VG30 and VG30DETT. |
| Body configurations | Not stated in the cited Nissan source. | Two-seat and 2+2 configurations. |
| Chassis technology | Not stated in the cited Nissan source. | Nissan lists four-wheel multi-link suspension, Super HICAS, and four-piston aluminum calipers. |
This is a generation-level comparison, not a complete specification guide. The available Nissan sources do not establish a year-by-year or market-by-market specification list for either generation, so check the model year and sales market before applying an engine, power figure, or feature to a particular car.

What engine came in the 300ZX Twin Turbo?
For the Z32, Nissan identifies the twin-turbo engine as the VG30DETT, a 3.0-liter V6. A specific Nissan Heritage Collection example—a 1989 Z32 2by2 Twin Turbo—has a 2,960 cc VG30DETT rated at 280 PS at 6,400 rpm and 388 N·m at 3,600 rpm. Those figures describe that cited vehicle; they should not be treated as specifications for every 300ZX Twin Turbo in every year or market. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check when identifying a 300ZX?
- Generation: establish whether the car is a Z31 or Z32 before comparing engines or equipment.
- Model year and market: these matter when checking specifications; the cited figures do not constitute a global, year-by-year catalogue.
- Engine and body: for a Z32, distinguish naturally aspirated from twin-turbo and two-seat from 2+2.
- Documentation: match any owner’s manual or factory service manual to generation, model year, and market. A manual for one version may not cover another.
The cited history and heritage pages do not establish Z31 year-by-year power figures, reliability patterns, ownership costs, or present-day parts availability. Those questions require evidence specific to the car, its market, and its condition.
